i mean, if barkov is blowing mikko koivus numbers away (like destroying them as someone above suggested) shouldn't he be like generational talent.

Generational talent in Finland does not equal generational talent in the NHL.

If COL ends up getting the 2nd overall pick, who do you guys think they pick (assuming FLA takes Jones)?

They are already really strong at C with Duchene, ROR, and Stastny. I could see them picking Drouin over MacKinnon.

Also, I can't see Drouin getting past CAR.

Drouin for sure. They need some wingers and he's the best one in the draft, and very comparable to MacKinnon.

If the draft went how the season standings are now, my bet would be:

Florida - Jones
Colorado - Drouin
Carolina - MacKinnon
Nashville - Barkov
Tampa - Nichushkin
Calgary - Lindholm
Edmonton - Monahan

Fairly sure Tallon would not go Jones at 1 or even 2... he learned his lesson about D in the top three with Barker... and in CHI he was always about having strong depth up front... he has a Keith-lite in Kulikov... a Seabrook lite in Gudbranson... now he needs a poor mans Toews and MacKinnon looks to be that

Huberdeau-MacKinnon-UFA...Kulikov-Gudbranson...Markstrom is a nice starting five... not quite Hossa-Toews-Kane-Keith-Seabrook-Niemi but not a bad imitation

Meanwhile Jones is a Colorado boy... he is likely Avs pick anywhere they pick in top three...

So:

FLA 1/2- MacKinnon
COL 1/2- Jones
3rd- One of Drouin Nichushkin Barkov
4th- One of Drouin Nichushkin Barkov
5th- One of Drouin Nichushkin Barkov
6th- One of Monahan Lindholm Nurse
7th- One of Monahan Lindholm Nurse
8th- One of Monahan Lindholm Nurse

6th would be nice draft position... you get luxury of either a faller from the top 5 or choice of the 'next group'... I have said 7th all year and I stick by that... not quite as good and maybe more importantly not the place for rumored Oilers favorites Horvat Lazar... if MacT cannot use our 2nds or borderline young guys to move up we might see his 'bold' move be a drop down for picks or young roster player...

I guess if you are in 7th and the team in 10 (BUF? PHO? PHI?) comes to you and wants to move up and you are confidant Lazar or Horvat still there at 10, what gets MacT to move?

BUF- Luke Adam?
PHO- Rundblad?
PHI- Cousins?

http://blogs.edmontonjournal.com/201...rkov-in-draft/

This is a quote from Matheson's article on March 31st.

Quote:
The Edmonton Oilers almost surely would take Finnish centre Aleksander Barkov with the first pick in the NHL entry draft, but they have to get in the top five to do so. He’s big at six-foot-three and 205 pounds, has skill and he’s just 17, but he’s played in the Finnish Elite League for two years and has 48 points in 53 games in Tampere. “Plays a 200-foot foot game, up and back. Plays like (Mikko) Koivu,” said former Oilers star winger Jari Kurri, general manager of the Finnish national team. “Yeah, I like him.”

A swede with a last name ending in "ov"?

He will be the softest player in the NHL.

Watch him play before you bring nationality into play. He's a tough kid.

It's actually kind of funny, I think the two top rates Finns and the two top rated Swedes are more physical then the top two rates Canadians and Americans.

No the joke was that he was swedish and russian.
Which are stereotypically "soft".

Finns are the tough pests.

How far off is Lindholm from being NHL ready?

It all comes down to who wins that lottery. Odds are it won't be Florida. I see them taking MacKinnon 2nd overall.

It's cool. I just get really defensive when it comes to stereotypes. Russian and Swedish players aren't soft. They have really changed their development process and Canadians tend to focus on talent a lot more than in the past. I mean, look at Yakupov, Smid and Klefbom. They are all physical.

I would argue that Zadorov and Nichuskin are easily more physical than MacK and Drouin.

He still lives on in Jeff Petry, though. It wasn't all bad.

What would you say his biggest weaknesses are? From what I understand, his puck protection is among the best in this draft class. His board work and ability to shield the puck is great.

Koivu confirmed that Barkov is farther along than he was at a similar age.

I don't think it would be ridiculous to take Barkov anywhere from 2-5, to be honest.

Jones is the "gimme" D prospect and I think honestly the scouts just have more comparison points for Drouin and Mackinnon.

Barkov is playing in a men's league and it's hard to rate him, except against previous draft picks like Koivu and Rajala, etc.

Lindholm is a complete player so it's hard to pick his game apart. He protects the puck well, always keeps his head up and knows where he is going. He has speed to burn and loves to throw hits and battle. He draws comparissons to Forsberg/Giroux so you know you are geting a great player.

I guess he isn't rated top 3 for a couple reasons. He isn't 6'4 like some other highly rated guys first off, which doesn't really mean much. Second, he still needs to make sure his shot is consistent and at an NHL level. I personally think its there but he needs to get a bit better at being greedy and shooting the puck more. Finally, he still needs to show that he can be a go to guy and not just a great complimentary player.

The Oilers aren't going to be in position for Mack or Drouin (or Barkov most likely).

If we win lottery than its Jones. If we don't win lottery we are picking 5-9 and those players are gone
