The lack of plate discipline isn't surprising to me anymore. He probably tells them to swing as hard as they can at anything remotely ball-shaped that comes near the plate. Since walks are for wusses, I guess.

I don't blame Charlie for the lack of walks. Discipline is a skill. You can teach it to an extent but at the end of the day you either have it or you don't.

I blame RAJ. It's obvious he doesn't value guys that work the count and draw walks. It shows all throughout the system as well. The guy has a flawed philosophy of a successful organization.

RAJ has explicitly stated he does not value walks, he values "production". See here, specifically in the "Offense? What Offense?" section: http://philliesnation.com/archives/2...nnan-and-brown. I have no idea what the hell that means, but it's obvious he has some disdain for Sabremetrics, and it shows in how they built the team and acquired players with negative WAR values.

WIP said Charlie is the highest odds to be the first manager fired this year. I am in the minority of liking Charlie, but I am curious to see what Ryne Sandberg could do with this team.

Not many people dislike Charlie, it's just that he's no longer the right manager for this team. He's great in the clubhouse, and managing stars, and players. However, this team needs someone to make strategic decisions, and he is not good at that. He has been costing them games for a while now.

Charlie is a great dude and I'll always love him for 08 and subsequent successful seasons, but I tend to agree that he may not be the right guy. Who knows if Sandberg is the right guy, though.

This. Pat Burrell walked a lot, Jayson Werth walked a lot, Chase Utley walks a lot. If you get players who have that skill, it will show up on the field. And if you don't, you get the Phillies.

Then I guess Ryan Howard has lost his skill to be discliplined at the plate. In his rookie season he walked 108 times. 2011 was his last full season and he walked only 75 times.

Howard's game has regressed so much since his rookie season and Manuel is the one to blame for that.

Looks like the phils are going to recall Adam Morgan (3rd round, 120th overall, '11) to fill in for Lannan who goes to the 15 day DL. Really liked what I saw from Morgan last year in Reading (AA), and while I haven't watched todays start I have seen the rest for LV (AAA) and he's been really impressive. Big lefty with good command, plus change up.

The first game in the series against the Reds, they were down 2 runs in the 9th and Jimmy was up. Your goal should be to get on base there. Instead, Jimmy just hacks away trying to hit a homerun. Perfect time where you should've been looking for a walk. But they've gone through three hitting coaches at this point. Obviously some guys are just not listening.

37 of those walks were intentional. And 35 the following year. The most IBB he's gotten since then was 17, so really it's not that drastic a difference in his plate discipline. Pitchers probably made some adjustments and figured out how to attack his weaknesses better.

They'll have to remove someone from the 40 man roster if they're going to add Morgan. I'm not sure who that would be. It might just make more sense to call up Pettibone or Ethan Martin if it's just going to be two or three starts, since they're already on the 40 man.

Morgan deserves it based on performance, but he would be pitching on 3 days rest if he were to fill Lannan's spot and he just threw 100 pitches today. Cloyd would be on 6 days rest. He hasn't been too sharp this year, but he's already on the 40 man.

Unless they really want to pull a rabbit out of the hat and want a lefty, Jesse Biddle lines up in Lannan's spot. He's not on the 40 man, but he will be added soon enough. He's not quite ready for big time, but you never know.

Mayberry does a face plant in RF, the ump calls a foul ball fair. Somehow these runs count against Hamels. Lol baseball.

And Rollins proves my point again. Instead of taking pitches and trying to work the count, he swings away at balls in the dirt. But he's got to be the big hero, doesn't he? I'm sick of his act.

this team is so awful.

i've been wondering since the end of last season what people were seeing in this team. NO ONE can hit consistently, no one has any conception of working a count, and when the 2 guys you're relying on the most to get on base and drive in runs are a 36 year old and a guy with knees made out of mashed potatoes, you have big issues. this team will be lucky to be .500 again, let alone compete for a playoff spot or the division.

cliff lee is the only pitcher delivering, the bullpen has been worse than it was last year and it was supposed to have been "fixed".

this team is REALLY hard to watch.

at least with the Flyers we can route for a high draft pick. in baseball, the draft essentially means nothing unless you have the 1st overall pick, and even that's a crapshoot. i think we need to clean house and start a legitimate rebuild, this team is cooked.
