I love Penner but there comes a point when you are making millions of dollars where it has to wear on his teammates, coaches, and upper management. In my opinion, fitness shouldn't be an option in the NHL. Being an out of shape pro hockey player is just a giant middle finger to the rest of the world.
I think some levels of fitness are genetic. He maybe normal compared to other pro hockey players. He may also not have mentally taken up the "fitness" challenge required of him.

My favorite thing Penner brings is just a big mother ****er to grab opponents trying to be tough, and remove their desire to be tough with any of the Kings. I love it when some opponent is trying to rub one of the Kings forwards and suddenly Penner's arm grabs him from behind and just ends it.

Now that's a great image, carter sucking the life out of the other team, leaving corpses all over the ice.

I would also put him on PP #2 over Lewis because that unit lacks a lot of things, including a big body in front of the net.
Yeah, I wondered about that too. All he'd have to do is stand in front of the net, he's big enough. Sutter must not like him or trust him...

Possibly, but I think that there is a LW coming back as part of the Bernier trade. I've read that a few places but the one that mentioned that the deal is w/an Eastern conf team and DL wouldn't give up JB untl the playoffs were done, so it'll be done on draft day. It was at the end of an article in a Canadian (Toronto?) paper about 10 days ago. My guess is Philly or NJ or Toronto (esp since they tried 3 times on trade day to get Luongo and it didn't get done). We'll see.

IF DL targets a player in a trade for Bernier, I'd assume Matteau from NJ or Frattin from Toronto seem to make the most sense in terms of fitting needs, salary and age. Also, if you use Bishop's value as a comparible, it'd likely be about all we'd get in the trade (with maybe a mid-round pick added in). Conacher is more proven than Matteau, so maybe a bit more with him.

Remember when we first acquired Penner he was pegged to be the LW everyone had been begging Dean Lombardi to pick up for Anze Kopitar? Oh how times have changed.

Penner just loves to tease us with flashes of brilliance, but then lulls us back to sleep with lazy plays and bad passes. He is a player I just want to love, but he just doesn't bring it every game/shift/second. If he had the tenacity of Clifford he would score 30 goals again, and earn time on the PP units. He hasn't earned it since being on the Kings.

Terrible quality Youtube video showing a bunch of Penner's goals from Edmonton. He moved pretty quick...

Because no one thought he was going to be Mr. Suck.

We need a top 6 player badly. Hopefully we can get something during the offseason.

There's something you don't see him doing anymore, going aggressively to the front of the net. Nowadays he looks so nonchalant and passive. I don't think he has any confidence left in him. He's scored 2 goals in 29 games this season. Toffoli has as many goals in 8 games. Fourth liners such as Nolan and Fraser have just as many goals. That is simply unacceptable and pathetic.

I don't disagree with your point at all but Edmonton was 27–47–8. Last in the West.
Penner as the leading goal scorer and overall scorer - ultimately it is about winning games.

We have not gotten what we had expected from him. The year he was traded he put up good numbers in Edmonton and next to nothing when he got here.

I agree completely we haven't got what we expected from him.

I don't think anyone expected him to score at the same level as he was in Edmonton, certainly not me. I was easily his harshest critic when the trade went down and said we overpaid, which we did. That said, even I expected more than 15 goals in 139 games (including the playoffs). That's a .108 goals per game pace, or 8.84 goals per 82 games. Prior to coming to LA his goals per game was .311, or 25.51 goals per 82 games. He's scoring at roughly one-third the rate he was coming to LA, and that's just unacceptable and nowhere close to us getting what we expected.

Wooty and KF you guys have nailed it entirely.

When Penner goes to his next team his scoring will increase and defence will suffer for it (back tthat is at all possible) but I will be surprised if he ever finds the handle again.

Such a disappointment.

Sounds strange but maybe he fits into a more wide open offense. He still looks like he can't skate hard for an extended period of time. If you see him go all out he will immediately turn and head for the bench and sometimes I wonder if he'll make it all the way there. Luckily his contract is up and he can go look for a better fit for him and the Kings can find a better fit for them. Hopefully he can go out with guns a blazing in the playoffs.

I think he's the Kings' Claude Lemiuex. Despised roundly (although for different reasons) and turns it on in the playoffs. I'm calling it now, Dustin Penner, 2013 Conn Smythe winner!

Please post the lottery numbers on that day too, because you are right, I will be playing them.

If only he had half the set of balls that Claude Lemieux had...

So 1 ball then?

I guess if it was Claude's it would be bigger and bolder than pens.

Although Penner's a big guy.... hmmm

His balls must be like anchors. That could be what's making him look so slow out there. I used to think Ryan Smyth and Alex Frolov had a laborious style of skating, but I'd have to say that Penner has them beat. It's too much of an effort for him to keep his feet moving for more than 20 seconds.

If the Kings look outside of the organization and dip into free agency, there are a few UFA options that may be available this summer as potential replacements for Penner on the 2nd line left wing position. Some of those names are:

Ryane Clowe
Valtteri Filppula
Brenden Morrow
Clarke MacArthur
Mason Raymond
Vinny Prospal

I'm thinking that most of those players save for Morrow and Prospal may be looking at long term deals. You would think that playing for a winning team that has a shot at the Cup would entice some players who want a shot at the Cup to take a shorter term deal, which is what I think the Kings will be looking at considering their cap situation for 2013-14 and the players they will look to re-sign this summer as well as next year.

If the Kings want a big bodied player and/or a physical winger to play with Richards and Carter, then Clowe and Morrow are the two best options. Filppula and Prospal are both play making left wings who are both capable of sliding to center if need be. Raymond and MacArthur are speedy wingers who get in first on the fore check and can be considered tweeners between the 2nd and 3rd lines. They won't register big points but could produce offensively if put into that position.

I wouldn't break the bank for any of those players on the list, and it appears that Clowe at the very least is going to command big dollars, so we can likely scratch him off the list. The Kings don't necessarily have to only pursue free agents though as they could be looking at addressing the need for a scoring winger via trade.

Internally, I think Toffoli and Pearson may have the edge to win that spot. I know Toffoli is primarily a RW, but he seems to be a versatile enough forward who may be able to adapt to the opposite wing. I do believe that Toffoli was originally listed as a center when he was drafted, similar to Brown who was also listed as a center on some scouting reports when he was selected in 2003, and I don't think Brown played LW until he joined the Kings.

I wanna see Tanner Pearson win Penner's job in camp
By all accounts he is a tough kid with a good all-around game who can win board battles and is great at parking in front of the net.

Reportedly was asking for 8 years and $6 million per before he was traded. I don't want anything close to what Clowe is likely to get from some crazy GM in UFA.

That can't be true, it is completely ridiculous and way out of Clowe's ballpark to get anything near that range, but as you stated, ya never know with free agency. It seems like a few GMs and owners lose some brain cells on July 1.

It's true. I remember several of the sharx fans acknowledging it on the trade board.

Filppula would be interesting but I'm not sure if his 60 point season was a fluke or not. Plus we have a disturbing lack of Finns and Swedes on our team...

I watched him a bit more in this game, wow he is slow on his feet. He can't use any of his talents because he has so little agility

He really needs to get one of those beast trainers to convert him into a pro athlete. Maybe someone can send him some P90X discs
