To get better attendance. Weekend dates are always going to draw better, and since the dates weren't set until last Saturday, this at least gives them a chance to do some marketing.

Gladiators take game 1 5-0 over South Carolina. Small crowd of less than 3,000 but the Atlanta Braves were home tonight, the AAA Gwinnett Braves had their home opener and the final 4 is in town.

Game 2 went to Gwinnett by one goal, and they won Game 3 too, 3-1, in front of less than 1,400. Gwinnett up 3-0 in series now.

Playoff brackets, include schedules.

3 of the four 2nd round matches set. Looks like most 2nd round series will start this Friday.

Wow, that's a bad time to schedule 5 days of Disney on ice. Disney requires the ice to be painted and the conversion takes a couple of days in and back out. So a team couldn't get on the ice for about 11 days.

A couple years ago when we missed the playoffs, so it wasn't a concern, but Cirque Soliel was scheduled at the end of April. This was a show that required anchors in the floor. Therefore needing ice removal. It would have meant about 13 days of non skatable/game ice

the company that owns/runs the building does have the right to do this, though. and the teams know this from the start. most buildings aren't going to turn down a nice payday like disney that was probably scheduled a year ago, and no teams
are going to write a big check to keep that week open a year ahead of time just in case they make it that far.

Not simply a matter of 5 days for Disney on Ice. County owns the arena, and for past few years managed the arena through their Convention and Visitors Bureau, which gave it a balance of local promotion. However, last month Gwinnett County entered into partnership with AEG, and effectively all management of the facility has been handed off. http://www.gwinnettcenter.com/AEG.696.0.html

Don't be surprised if all hockey decisions will now be based solely on financial criteria, driving the bottom line.

Guess who manages the Cyclones arena?

Like I said, a Disney type production is at least 11 days of hockey downtime. We do it every year in the middle of the hockey season when there are no games for 2 weeks. I need 1 day for the conversion and then paint it white. Overnight flooding, then another day of flooding and finishing touches. 2 more days after Disney to get it back to hockey.

In a perfect world there would be no conflicts, but the facilities out there have to make money too. If you were to take away from them 20k here, 50k there, 35k here, etc, it adds up quickly and blows out a budget. The team isn't losing any of its regular season games, which is their budget.

As I type, dirt is being dropped off in our arena. So if we had won our 1st round, no matter their
seed, the team would be on the road this weekend, and no practice for 5 or 6 days.

Not with who currently operates the arena(ASG).

Better than Hockey

From the fans' perspective, it looks like the Gwinnett Gladiator season has drawn to a close due to lack of arena availability. But not to worry if you are wondering how to fill your now-idle time. Latter half of May is booked with 20 - this is not a misprint, 20 school graduation ceremonies. Demand for tickets should be high, so they needed an arena that seats some 13,000; some quarter of a million people may attend. Attend them all, and loudly support the youth of the community. If your inclination is not only academic, but also includes events of an athletic nature, there has been a single date provided. You will enjoy bringing the family to that fast-growing sport that the whole family enjoys - lingerie football. With choices as that, is there any wonder why the Convention Bureau and AEG decided to shut out the Gladiators?

Since the Arena management and the team are different entities, the arena likely makes very little if any money off of them. Those other events, no matter how silly you think they are, actually make money for the arena. I'd guess that the Gladiators sell their own tickets, and therefore get all of that revenue, whereas the arena likely doesn't sell their tickets

Come on - you really believe that 36+ hockey dates lose money for the owners of the arena? And that 20 graduation ceremonies bring dollars to the owners? This was simply a penny-wise, pound foolish tactic by arena management. It will make for an interesting negotiation if there is to be a continuing relationship after the 2013 - 2014 season. Indy should be watching this one closely.

As a moderator for the BOH, I can state that stranger arrangements exist (and make more $$ than teams).

For instance, Kansas City built an arena, capable of NBA or NHL tenancy. And they've been the "we can always go to" threat in a number of teams getting a new arena/deal.

Yet, they are making $$s there, without a major sport anchor tenant.

Realize that the arena operation (ushers, security, merchandise, concessions -- personnel, plus power and other utilities; and some maintenance) is only part of what a team has in expenses for a game. There's also the player's salaries, etc.

So just having a visiting concert may produce more $$ (and have less expense, adding more to bottom line) than a game. (There's a reason those concert tickets are high -- covers not only what the artist/group requires for their appearance and expenses, but also for the venue.)

The arena still gets money from concession sales and I doubt seriously the arena would be able to find something to fill those 36 dates should the Gladiators go somewhere else. The Gladiators are the arena's longest serving tenant so not holding playoff dates for them certainly isn't a way to treat the people(fans) who have been good to you for 10 years.
