Trade Orpik, bring up Harrington or Dumoulin, magically convince Iginla, Murray, Morrow and Dupuis to sign here for less and pick one of only keeping 22 players on the active roster/getting rid of Glass.

Any of you guys think that they might consider moving Niskanen instead of Orpik this summer? Not that it's the right decision, but like some of you have said, as bad as he's been this year he still holds a lot of weight in the locker room.

I personally think that TK and Glass will both be gone to free up money. I don't think there is anyway we have a player over a million in salary on the 4th line. Except maybe Jokinen, but that is because of the depth at center.

a lot if not all depends on how the playoffs go. If Iginla/Murray/Morrow win a cup, do they stay? Does Iginla want to go back to Calgary? Will any one of them consider retirement?

We will have to see, but I am truly excited for these playoffs. We have a monster of a team. I just want to see them get another cup. Not just to see Iginla and those guys raise their first, but also for sid, geno, and co. to get another. Especially with the past couple injury riddled seasons and what might have been.

Cheers boys!

A lot depends on the cup run. Assuming Crosby and Malkin return at almost full health then a successful playoffs would be a a cup final. If that is the case, then Crosby certainly would want the Pens to sign Dupuis. Also after Letang and Malkin are extended, then what is left to utilize is what the Pens can do. No question one of either Orpik or Martin will need to go to sign Iginla at close to 5 million. I would prefer the Pens sign Murray and Cooke rather than Iginla.

My wishlist:

Sign:
Iggy - 3 years 4.5-5mil
Duper - 2-3 year 2.5-3mil
Morrow - 1 year 2mil
Murray - 2 years 2.5mil

Don't sign/Dump/Trade:
Kennedy - 2mil
Glass - 1.1
Orpik - 3.75

On fence:
Eaton
Cooke
-I would be fine with them signing both but also fine with letting them go.

Lineup:

Kunitz-Sid-Iggy
Bennett-Malkin-Neal
Morrow-Sutter-Duper
Jokinen-Vitale-Adams
Jeffrey

Defense (in no order)
Martin
Letang
Despres
Nisky
Murray
Bortuzzo
Engel
Dumoulin

Then Jokinen and Morrow are off the books once the big deals for Geno and Tanger kick in. Trade Martin or Nisky to make room if necessary.

Edit: I haven't crunched the numbers to see if that even fits in the salary cap next year. Upon further review, I'm thinking it might not. Either way, that's my wishlist haha.

I decided to take a crack at it, obviously we don't know what salaries the players will ask for. If we can't keep Morrow for that price, maybe keep Jokinen there and save $400,000 in cap space.

Don't think you would need to buyout Martin or Engelland. Both would be fairly easy guys to trade and get picks or players back.

i see a team like Colorado or Edmonton or Winnipeg offering Duper a Hudler/PAP like contract. in Colorado he can replace Hejduk who is going to retire. in Edmonton he can take the second line LW spot and in Winnipeg he can take the second line RW spot across from Kane.

happy trails Duper. it's been real.

i'll believe the 2.2-2.5 discount numbers when he signs on the dotted line. until then...

Tight fit. Bought out Orpik and Glass, because neither are worth their salary and not likely to bounce back to form. Orpik's been bad for several seasons now, and Glass is just a cap casualty (and an easy choice because of his play).

I wouldn't re-sign Brendan Morrow just because I think it's too likely that we wouldn't like what we get from him over an 82-game season. His legs were dead in Dallas, as they were for the first few games here. He's been re-invigorated but that only lasts so long. I'd rather give Joe Vitale his full-time spot on the roster.

Iginla, on the other hand, I'd love to have but he'd have to sign at a discount for sure. So it's really up to him.

You're right, that was unrealstic, Kunitz Crosby, Dupuis won't be split, Morrow and Cooke probably won't be re-signed.

I'd love to resign Morrow, but it's going to have to be low. Not sure what he'd be looking for, but it's going to have to be around 1.5 to stay here.

I'd like to resign Iginla too, but only if he comes for 4-4.5.

lol, well yeah if we could get Morrow for $1.5M that'd be amazing. Some with Iginla at that price.

Morrow isn't going to be getting 4 mil again. He's probably looking at about 2.5, so hopefully he'd take a little less to stay (although, he has no ties here so not sure of the likelyhood).

As for Iginla, I think people are way to fast to say move/buy out (which there won't be a buyout of either) Orpik/Glass to keep him. I still don't see Orpik moved, so people moving him to get Iggy low 5's are dreaming, IMO.

I don't see Orpik being moved either.

I'm sure Shero has some ideas.

EDIT: Alright without capgeek, I can see something like...

Kunitz-Crosby-_____
Bennett-Malkin-Neal
Jokinen-Sutter-_____
Glass-Vitale-Adams

Orpik-Martin
Niskanen-Letang
Despres-Engelland

1st line RW: Either Pascal Dupuis or Jarome Iginla
3rd line RW: Either Matt Cooke or Brenden Morrow

Now I checked Capgeek, and if we re-sign Cooke and Adams at their current salary, we have $6M in cap space to sign either Jarome Iginla or Pascal Dupuis, and that's not including an extra defenseman or two and an extra forward. So I think Shero will need to make a roster move or two so he can have some room with the cap space.

Glass could be traded to clear $1.1M, I'm sure a team would do that. Zach Sill is NHL ready, IMO. Listening to the radio, WBS announcer said he would be ready for the NHL and the Pittsburgh Penguins next season. Dustin Jeffrey also.

People want either Brooks Orpik or Paul Martin moved, some Pens fans think it's unrealistic. Maybe a guy like Matt Niskanen? $2.3M for a player who probably won't push any defenseman (except Simon Despres) out of the top 4. And this would be based on if the Pens think Dumoulin is NHL ready.

Then you would have $9.4M to sign Iginla or Dupuis, and extra defenseman or two and an extra forward. So a refined lineup would be...

Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis/Iginla
Bennett-Malkin-Neal
Jokinen-Sutter-Cooke
Jeffrey-Vitale-Adams
Sill

Orpik-Martin
Despres-Letang
Dumoulin-Bortuzzo
Eaton-Engelland

Fleury
Vokoun

Depending on the price of Dupuis or Iginla, maybe the Pens can re-sign Murray and let Dumoulin develop a little more. I don't think the Pens can realistically keep both Dupuis and Iginla. Dupuis is a huge part of the team, but does anyone else think Iginla should be a bigger priority? Iginla is a little under 2 years older than Dupuis but is a future hall of famer and I don't if anyone agrees with me on this but a better player than Dupuis?

Dupuis will be cheaper than Iginla no doubt in my mind, so maybe Shero decides to keep him because he gels with Crosby and Kunitz and he would cost less which would help us with the Letang and Malkin extensions.

Maybe Shero does move a guy like Martin or Orpik to clear that room, only Shero and his staff knows.

Well one veteran d has to be moved. At some point you have to cut cost on the back end to allow for increases in salary on the front end. Why the hell did we draft all these d if we aren't going to trade our vets? Next year you will have Despres and Bortuzzo as full time NHL'ers that should be in the top 6 and Dumoulin that is likely ready to make the jump. Someone's gotta go and it shouldn't be a guy like Engel with a low cap hit. So it's either Martin, Orpik, or Nisky.

this is very realistic.

maybe not exactly zack sill, but perhaps a player like him from the UFA pool.

also i highly doubt we'll be re-signing murray. and i think jeffrey's bridge contract will be a bit more expensive.

Yeah I agree about Murray and Jeffrey.

I do think Zach Sill is ready for the NHL, he can add speed and grit to our 4th line for less money than Glass. He's been in Wilkes Barre for 4 years, I can see him coming in and being really impressive (like Joe Vitale).

If you look at my last post (#418) I posted some things about the lineup, some financial possibilities, player decisions, etc. Kinda revised from my more realistic lineup.

You be the GM

I know it's early and we don't have post season performances to base things off of right now, but who would you like to see kept on the roster moving forward next season and who's going to be shown the door?

Here are the players, currently on the roster that will be under contract for next season..

Under Contract
Center
Sidney Crosby-$8.7M
Evgeni Malkin-$8.7M
Brandon Sutter-$2.06M
Joe Vitale-$550K

Left Wing
James Neal-$5.0M
Chris Kunitz-$3.725M
Jussi Jokinen-$2.1M
Tanner Glass-$1.1M
Beau Bennett-$900K

Defenseman
Kris Letang-$3.5M
Paul Martin-$5.0M
Brooks Orpik-$3.75M
Matt Niskanen-$2.3M
Simon Depres-$840K
Deryk Engelland-$566K

Goalie
Marc-Andre Fleury-$5.0M
Tomas Vokoun-$2.0M

Restricted Free Agents
Left Wing
Dustin Jeffrey

Right Wing
Tyler Kennedy

Defenseman
Robert Bortuzzo

Unrestricted Free Agents
Center
Craig Adams

Left Wing
Brenden Morrow
Matt Cooke

Right Wing
Jarome Iginla
Pascal Dupuis

Defenseman
Douglas Murray
Mark Eaton

Depth Chart
Kunitz-Crosby-RW
Bennet-Malkin-Neal
Jokinen-Sutter-RW
Glass-Vitale-RW

Depres-Letang
Orpik-Martin
Engelland-Niskanen

Fleury
Vokoun

The Salary Cap should be $64,300,00.
As it stands with that lineup above, the Penguins would be at $55,798,333 in payroll, giving them $8,501,667 in cap space to work with.

Who is going to be offered a contract, and who's going to be shown the door?

Be the GM from behind your computer..

I said this on the previous page:

I LOVE Iginla, but Dupuis might be the smarter move as he's absolutely perfect for this team and keeps improving. Plus it would save cap space to hold onto Murray.
