My gut says that if they were being funded by an organization, they would have quietly slipped out of the area before surveillance caught up with them, and not stayed around to jack a 7-11.

It's also a hard sell for me to think that the parents would have moved here two years ago with a plan to make their kids basically suicide bombers.

My guess? The older brother who was killed last night, 26, got something in his head, and convinced his younger brother, 19, to help him go through with it. But time will tell of course.

Just weird. It's like watching a crappy Die Hard script, but in reality.

EDIT:

Look at this. Nobody should ever have to wake up and see this.

Also, organizations tend to make claims of responsibility when something like this happens. They want the publicity. There has been no such claim.

Live video, about 100 cops about to storm a house. Watch at your own risk, although they did say they're on a 2 second delay.

Police source: 2 Russian nationals pulled over in Niagara Falls; 4 suspicious backpacks in the car, robot & bomb techs on scene.

Eh... might suck to be Russian for a while. Hope there was some suspicion beyond them being Russian.

There's so much of this that makes absolutely no sense.

1) The two brothers appear to have been in the country for almost 10 years...parents had claimed asylum to come here...so home-grown?
2) They know that they are being hunted, see their pictures...and decide the best thing to do is hold up a 7-11 and shoot a police officer?
3) Why the **** did they stay in the Boston area after the bombing?
4) They were throwing explosives from a carjacked car--which means they had all these explosives on their body, not in the car since it wasn't their car
5) Now they are saying that the father in Russia said the younger one (still at large) is a 2nd year medical student...which makes absolutely no sense since he is only 19, and it's been reported that he got a high school scholarship (I'm assuming a prep school) only 2 years ago--then again giving misinformation to parents abroad might be the only thing that actually makes sense

Yeah... I mean it's basically the start of tourist season. Russians are not an uncommon sight around here.

Yea, though the reports make the brothers out as Chechens, not Russians. Fine point at this stage and time, but...

This is what I've been studying about for the past two years in grad school. Couple thoughts after seeing initial reports:

It's going to be interesting how this group is connected to other networks. How these types of groups come about is very complex. They might be trained and funded from overseas, non-state actors, but aside from that, they get little to no direction. Or at least that's how it can work. Guidance might be to attack on an important date, and that's it.

Some of these groups go underground and become difficult to track. If you're familiar with the Rodney Stark - Donatella Della Porta - Michel Wieviorka model on how these groups develop, you're familiar with the choice in clandestinity that a group makes. After they decide to end contact and no longer recruit, they are essentially like guided missiles that have received their terminal guidance, and need nothing more. That makes them hard to track, because the only communication they have in intra-group. If they're already in the United States, that's very hard to track.

I think there will be a connection to an overseas network. Making pressure cooker bombs can be learned over the internet. Suicide vests are harder. Coordinated strikes where bombs go off simultaneously is very hard. I'd guess these guys were radicalized (maybe on their own), offered up to recruitment (or got recruited), received guidance and training, received equipment, and then went clandestine.

It's going to be interesting how US - Russian relations work from here. This give Russia more reasons to intervene in places it wants to go anyway.

Can't believe that Rodney Stark just got name-dropped in an OT post. Nice.

The travel patterns of the two brothers will be interesting. Did they do any overseas travel? If not, the training part is hard to fathom, though I agree they had some training.

As for Russia, that's an interesting point. However, it appears as if the two brothers had not lived in Chechnya for quite some time. I don't see much of an angle in it for Russia, but we'll see.

While Chechnya itself has quieted down, Russia is still angling to gain more influence in the region. If they can tie these two to a group based in another nation in that region, they've got a reason to up their involvement.

Yeah. Especially since now there's a 7.0 magnitude quake in Szechuan region of China.

Boston bombings/manhunt
West, TX explosion
Earthquake in China

Depending on your political views, the gun control result could be added as well.

What a ****** week.
