I find it interesting that Trocheck isn't getting any play on the main prospect board. Or the Plymouth board for that matter.
Why? The prospect board isn't really a haven of glorious information for prospects post-draft. Prospects who are property of teams, especially smaller market teams, aren't the type of topics that most people are particularly interested in. Some European drafted prospects have threads for obvious reasons, but generally unless you are a mega prospect, or a prospect of a significant team, there isn't much to discuss.
Which is fine. Who cares? Trocheck is a player with definite NHL potential. He may be an excellent 3rd round pick. Discussions and hype with these things can only go on for so long.
I think for most of us, his transition to the AHL is going to give us a good indicator of his likely offensive upside. I prefer his prospects in the NHL to Howden at this point, but we shall see. 19 yr old's in the CHL always tend to look better than 20 yr old players in the AHL.
A quick observation on the results of our 2011 draft post-first year shows us very very cautious mild optimism. Matheson had a better year than expected i think. He's further away than some point would like to admit, but he's unquestionable a player with attributes that can lead to a steady and good NHL career.
Hodges and Delnov had solid seasons. Hodges is going to have to work hard to be NHL player. Never seen Delnov but it seems like he had a satisfactory first year in North America, but will need to improve. Never seen Beauvillier.
Nielsen had a solid year. Not a tremendously gifted player with much upside, but can perhaps be a solid depth defenseman in the NHL down the road. Hopefully will see much more time with Linkoping in the top division next year. 2+ years in the SEL + AHL time will be needed if he ever makes it.
What's the word on Howden? What happened here? Seemed everyone was so confident on him a year ago, now...not so much?
Obviously, I love Howden's speed. I wish Dineen would put him on Bjugstad's line. He's had a couple scoring chances as well as a couple setups that weren't finished. Might take awhile for his offense to come around.
1. Michael Matheson - D Boston College (Florida Panthers)
When it comes to Michael Matheson, scouts have a hard time deciding which part of his game to be more excited about, his offensive skills or his defensive potential. One thing is clear though. They’re excited. Matheson exceeded all expectations in his first season at BC, producing 25 points while also being one of the leaders in plus/minus. Great numbers for a freshman blueliner, especially considering he only posted 27 points in the USHL the season before while playing in 17 more games.
Matheson does think offense first and he has the shot and skating ability to pose a major threat in the opponent’s end of the rink. He has good hands and outlets the puck extremely well. His vision is excellent and he is very capable of creating for his teammates, especially on the man-advantage. On the defensive side, he uses his frame effectively, has improved his positioning and is willing to sacrifice his body in the corners and in the shooting lanes to block shots. His defensive IQ is clearly developing in BC’s system, but he needs to work on limiting his penalties and the lapses that cause them. He has a very bright future, possibly as a top-pairing guy in the NHL.
HF just released the team prospect rankings and the Panthers are #1, thanks obviously to having 7 of our top prospects (Huberdeau, Markstrom, Bjugstad, Shore, Howden, Petrovic & Robak) getting some NHL ice time this yr and looking decent doing so. Our top 5 is now listed as:
Can you guys give me any info on Grimaldi and Bengtsson's development this season?
I have both of them in a keeper league with a 25 prospect pool limit. Would you recommend keeping them?
grimaldi did well in NCAA
bengtsson i have no idea, i think i read that he transitioned well into the USHL
i don't think either will make it to the NHL before they're done with their current stuff (grimaldi is 1 year "behind" in his NCAA development and got rewarded that weird shirt because injury so he's still a rookie in ncaa)
