So, it's between Barkov and Monahan?

If both are gone, then we grab a dman?

i think barkov is clearly ahead of monahan.

but yeah theoretically those two could go 4/5 so we may be left with a Dman 6-8.

I doubt Drouin makes it past #3.

Are you saying we are drafting that high? I hope not.

I'd say it's Jones, a centre or we trade the pick.

No thanks. That just screams impatience IMO. Worst case scenario all the good forwards are gone and we take Nurse. Nurse will be better in the long run than Gormley.

If everything goes right tonight we are picking 5th overall which would give us a good chance at Barkov.

Probably not.

I assume we'll be in the range of Barkov, Monahan and/or Nurse and I would take any of them over Gormley.

I'm a huge Gormely fan so maybe am bit biased but I think he is a #2 dman and will be soon.

If one of the big time centers is available with our pick I'm not sure i pull the trigger (but its close). If they are gone I think I rather have Gormely and his 3 years of development (since his draft) than wait for Nurse (possibly for another 2-4 years).

i'm also a fan of gormley, i think anyone expects nurse to be miles better has shiny toy syndrome, he might be, but theres no reason to expect that, could go either way.

top-4 i keep the pick, then i'd rank monohan>gormley>the rest pretty much.

we need a "faint glimmer of hope for jones" thread watching day by day breakdowns for our draft ranking.

Actually there's a few of us Yotes fans that are entertaining that idea; as painful as it would be to move Gormley, we need a impact potential 1C more, and Lindholm or Monahan fit the bill. Gormley may not have the ceiling that Nurse has, but he's certainly closer to making an immediate NHL impact and he's no slouch in skill set either.

Gamble for both sides, but it could work out.

Obviously it depends on what you can get for that pick, in a year or two Darnell Nurse could be a hell of an NHL defenseman.

No chance, Oilers finally going to pick their big C or D at 4-6, I can't see them trading that.

Barkov more than likley will be taken around 4th or is projected there. So we either trade up or hope we fall there by the end of the season.

I know this sounds like a terrible fan but I don't care if we have to lose every game, I want Barkov, sounds like that kid would be perfect, size, skill, two way play, and good on faceoffs.

If the decision is between Gormley and Nurse, I would take Gormely. Nurse *might* end up being better in the long run, but Gormley comes with the added benefit of having had more time to develop and would have a bigger impact on the Oilers sooner. Adding Gormley would make the Oilers better over the next 3 to 4 years than Nurse would.

P.S. If Barkov, Monahan, or Lindholm are on still on the board, I wouldn't trade the pick though.

Nurse is just as skilled(maybe even more so), bigger, a better skater and much more physical.

Passing on the guy with higher upside because he'll be making an impact possibly a year or two later would be a big mistake.

That may be true, but sometimes those skills don't translate into being the better player.

Also, I was low-balling on the 3-4 years. From everything I have read (*I only saw Nurse play during the top prospects game*), Nurse is really raw. It could take upwards of 5 to 6 years before he is even an effective NHLer. I think you make the Gormley trade to become a better team in the short term.

A lot also does depends on whether your scouts think Nurse becomes better than Gormley in the first place.

Nurse is already very defensively advanced for his age.

There's very few NHLers that have Nurse's combination of wingspan and skating. And basically none with his combination of wingspan, skating and nastiness.

I'm pretty confident that he could be an impact NHLer as early as next season.

ISS has him ranked #2, he's top 5 on Craig Button's list, and Bob McKenzie said on Team 1260 just today Nichushkin has cracked a lot of scouts top 4. He also said that many think he's every bit as good as Mackinnon and Drouin. Russian factor/KHL contract will be considerations, but this guy will be off the board extremely early. We should hope his stock continues to rise, it makes it more likely to have a shot at Barkov if he somehow slides to #5.

Can we see if Ekblad can get the NHL to give him exceptional status so we can draft him? WOW.

Actually, given management's verbal on trying to find a potential top 6er with a power forward game and frame, I would say Nichushkin has to be right there with Monahan for the top guys in our range.

He's an incredibly intriguing player. He has all the tools of a Jaromir Jagr and I think he will give every team that passes him nightmares for the next 20 years. Maybe the Russian factor isn't such a huge concern for us, considering we have Yak as our ambassador?

In any case, I would be very very happy with Nichushkin. I'd still rank him behind Monahan and Lindholm for who I would want to see us select, but I think his ceiling is higher than both of theirs. The top end of this draft is absolutely ridiculous. I honestly can't recall a draft that had this many guys of this high a quality in the time I've been really following prospects (since 2001).
