as I said, whoever quoted me, we need to hear more about it. but to me, this isn’t ok, this isn’t ‘kids making mistakes’, this isn’t ok to brush off. at face value, he quit the team after getting benched for taking a penalty. spin it however you want, if that turns out to be true, its not a good thing. I would even venture to say it was bad.

and god help me, datw is on the right track (albeit way over the top). if this was the rangers, we’d be having a hilarious gif party. if this is merril (hmmmm) we would forever associate his development with a question mark. this very may well turn out to be a wasted pick before this nonsense, and this isnt making it better. bottom line

I got the inside scoop from my sources. Apparently Matteau has quit hockey. He got on the fan bus to go to the airport, where he flew to Paris, changed his name to Benoit Coulliet and joined the French Foreign Legion. Also Bettman is penalizing the Devils for the incident and we will lose another 2 1st round picks.

Anyone have a link to the possibility of the Kovy penalty going from a 1st to a 2nd?

I don't think that makes sense though. Because if he was AHL eligbile, then why was he not sent to the AHL this year?

He was not AHL eligible because he started the year in Juniors. He can be assigned to an AHL team next year though, so long as he doesn't start with his junior team. At least that's my understanding.

The NHL/CHL agreement states that a player with junior eligibility signed by an NHL team must be returned to his junior team if he's not playing in the NHL.

My understanding as well.

When he was drafted, he was also drafted out of the developmental program and not the Q. He actually was going to go to UND but decided to go to Juniors instead. Since he's 20 next year, he can be assigned to the AHL as long as he doesn't start the season in Juniors.

No, because if that's true it's never been discussed publicly.

I don't see it happening.

Article explains it perfectly. Since Matteau wasn't drafted out of Juniors, he can start the season anywhere. Age doesn't even matter, I guess.

Age would matter, that's a core requirement for AHL eligibility.

If you read that article, it says the 20 year old age limit only applies to players coming from Juniors. Otherwise, 18 years old is the minimum.

Guy who broke the original story just put out another article in which he wrote that he doesn't think Matteau quit the team and it's more likely people are speculating that because of his reputation.

Google translate for the win!

EDIT: he may have just been suspended.. doesn't really make things better but that's another entirely plausible scenario here.

Always gotta make something outta nothing around here huh

Yes lets say **** you to the player that has looked better at a younger age than our last 3-4 1st round picks who have played in the NHL for us over some silly issue related to his junior team

That's an absurd comment, based on what?

I agree that I would have preferred to give up the 29th overall pick, but how is it a wasted pick?

Matteau showed signs of being a good player with us this season, there is no reason to think he won't be a good NHL forward.
