What's the thought of Zack Shannon coming to UNB next year? It's not like UNB to recruit from the MJHL and especially with the new roster cap in place. You just can't recruit for depth purposes, he must be an impact rookie, since there is a reduction in roster size (22 skaters). Shannon may also have a year left in Woodstock?

Zack would have more impact and a better chance to play, and flourish at St. Thomas, blasphomous as that is for his dad and the V-Red Prospects organization.Don't see him displacing any of the current crop. He could develop into a Todd type if the real Todd doesn't come back. But if you're Daine Todd...make the World University Team, treat it as a job audition...he'll make a lot of money playing D on the big ice over there.

That doesn't necessarily mean he's on the roster. Does it?

The Varsity Reds Senior Recognition & Team Awards Night was held last night at Kingswood, compliments once again of Brian Johnston.

There were the customary parting, and touching, speeches by the graduating Seniors: some were short and sweet (Chad Denny & Matt Fillier), medium length (Bryce Swan, Ben Wright & Dion Campbell), and then the epic talk by Dan LaCosta who bared his soul about at his time at UNB before closing with his "Top 10 Moments". You had to be there. Colby Pridham and Travis Fullerton are both in the States, so their words were missed. Luke Lynes spoke last year, so didn't get to repeat (they called it the "Luke Lynes Rule" ...)

Awards wise, the presentations last night were:

Terry Shannon Memorial Unsung Hero: Matt Fillier
Pete Violette Best Defenceman: Marc-Antoine Desnoyers
Hardest Worker: Dan LaCosta
Most Improved: Split between Daine Todd & Nick MacNeil
Best Defensive Player: Ben Shutron & Ben Wright
Top Attitude: Ben Shutron
MVP for the season: Dan LaCosta
MVP for the playoffs: Dan LaCosta

Other team awards that have been previously announced, and included on the program (in case you missed them this year):

Mark Jeffrey Award: Chris Culligan
Mike Cavanagh Award: Marc-Antoine Desnoyers
Punchy Walker Award: Travis Fullerton, Ben Wright & Nick MacNeil
Don MacAdam Award: Ben Shutron
MVP Nationals: Tyler Carroll
Red & Black Award: Ben Shutron
Team Rookie of the Year: Cam Braes
Top Scorer, Season: Chris Culligan
Top Scorer, Playoffs: Cam Braes

Oh, a couple of tidbits from last night:

Nick MacNeil wasn't there, as he is recovering from knee surgery.

When recruited, Matt Fillier only committed to the V-Reds after first making sure his girlfriend was admitted to the Nursing program at UNB.

Dan LaCosta admitted that after his so-so season last year he almost didn't come back this year, and it wasn't until the late summer that he decided to come back for sure. Good thing.

Chris Culligan, Ben Shutron, Daine Todd, Stefan Salituro & Josh Kidd are listed as "Future Grads". They're all completing their first degree this spring and applying for grad school or second degree next season. So they're bubble guys. That's a lot of talent that may or may not be playing for UNB next season.

It sounds like Wright is moving on, unless he goes after his masters?

Wouldn't mind seeing a UNB vs Yale game. Connecticut is reasonably close.

Daine Todd won't be back for a 5th year as he has signed an amateur try-out contract with the Texas Stars of the AHL.

Former V-Red Kevin Henderson scored his first NHL goal with the Nashville Predators Friday night.

I could be mistaken, but I think Todd could come back for a 5th year as he has signed an ATO and not a "regular" contract.

True, I believe. The key word in ATO is "Amateur".

Having second thoughts. Now hearing that playing one pro game WOULD cost someone their last year of eligibility.

He's played two -- and will face Henderson in the best of five in the first round of the AHL playoffs.

2013-2014 NCAA Pre-Season Road Trip

I assume both UNB and STU will make the usual trip south of the border in September?

Well, it's not official (but keen eyes on NCAA team pages have provided some nuggets), two of the UNB's Fall opponents updated their online schedules
- Colorado College Tigers (NCAA-NCHA - was old WCHA member) host UNB on Sat. Oct. 5th
- Denver Pioneers (NCAA-NCHA - was old WCHA member) host UNB on Sun. Oct. 6th.

The 3rd game, not confirmed or published, is likely Air Force on Monday.

UBC played these three on the same weekend last season (1-1-1, tie with Den, loss to CC and win over AF) and McGill the season before (0-2-1, tie with Den, and 1 goal loses to CC & AF) and Lethbridge before that (1-2 record, loss to CC, win over Den, loss in OT to AF).

Sounds like a good trip - I hope they have webcasts - love to see these games.

I wonder why they decided to travel so far west this year? Plenty of stiff competition on the east coast.

Looking forward to seeing who is coming here for exhibition games.

Well it's a good team building experience and the expenses are low as you're flying to a single city to play 3 teams.

Gardiner is always looking to play new teams. The only tough team UNB hasn't played on Hockey East is Northeastern. UNB hasn't played every one of the Ivy's but then some aren't worth playing.

After that you have to move west to Michigan and Minnesota.

If a NCAA team doesn't come to town, I'd like to see a Windsor, Western and/or Nip come to town.

I'd prefer to see an NCAA team at Christmas as they provide tougher competition which is better in the long run. Wouldn't mind seeing Western come to town. I imagine UQTR will be by as usual.

By the way, when does the AUS schedule come out? For some reason I was thinking it was not until August? OUA has theirs out already.

I think the draft version is out for review by each team now. I believe it's published in early July

UNB confirms via a Daily Gleaner story today that they are indeed going to Denver in October and Air Force is the 3rd game of the weekend.

They also play UdeM on the 16th at Cocagne. Windsor on the 20th & 21st (likely the Fall Classic) with Carleton on the 27th.

A game against the Portland Pirates (AHL) is still tentative.

If Duffy commits it may be a big mistake for him. He has talent for sure, but does not have the "work ethic" demanded by Gardiner. I'm not knocking Ben; just stating the obvious. There is a very good reason that he didn`t get a peek in his draft year. He may end up charting face-offs. Plus, he`ll be playing behind Culligan and perhaps Braes as a center. I can`t see him playing the wing because of the work ethic thingy. He`s just not physical. I would sooner see him at Acadia where he could be a top center on a team that is `a bit less demanding` ( with all due respect for the Acadia coaching staff ) and not as deep. If he does go to UNB, I hope he succeeds, not for your sake but for his.

The 2009-10 recruiting class was not too shabby! It produced defensemen, Josh Kidd, Spencer Corcoran, Ben Wright and Ben Shutron and forwards Nick Layton, Matt Fillier, Taylor Procyshen and Chris Culligan.
