They are saying Fisher may be back tomorrow. I think Yip is still listed as questionable. and add Gaustad to your list.

gaustad needs a nickname.. paul "made of glass" gaustad ? talk about a horrible trade... we give up a 1st then sign him to a pretty rough contract for a 4th line faceoff/pk specialist

*disclaimer: i am not saying gaustad has been horrible.. just for what we gave up, it has been bad. pretty much a guy who is bad *** at draws and gets hurt alot.

Gaustad's contract would suck is he was healthy 100% of the time. It's awful when he's hurt for half of it too...

Glasstad is a nice nickname IMO.

I think they're on our side; they're basically screaming "You can't ice 12 third line, two-way players and win a Cup and you haven't tried to trade for one, so we are going to make you terrible so you can hopefully draft one."

Gaustad has been one of our worst acquisition period. I like what he brings to the table when he's healthy, just not at that price and he's not healthy enough.

Can he be bought out?

He only has a limited NTC, so yes, and I would say he's probably a good candidate for one of our two amnesty buyouts...

Seems inevitable that at least one player will get hurt tomorrow, pulling the jersey off their back to give to a fan...

ive said this elsewhere but i'll say it again here

Amnesty buyouts make sense for teams with tons of cash but no cap space

we have cap space for days... what we do not have a pile of cash to waste paying someone not to play AND paying their replacement.

Unless we can sign someone with more to offer than Goose, for less than the 1 million dollars per year we would save by buying him out, it makes ZERO sense to buy him out....

man, I hope his contract was insured. He can't go more than 10 games without an injury.

So we don't have the money to buy him out, but we have the money to give him a contract that's wildly above his value in the first place?

We found the money to buy out the last year of Dumont's contract, and this situation isn't a whole lot different. Gaustad has missed 45% of the games he has been on the roster for. If Trotz insists on moving Wilson to center, we can put Spaling in that spot at $1.5M, or even Mueller at $700k and be much better off than paying Goose $8M over the next two years to play half our games. The economics of the NHL are about to change again when the cap drops; lots of good options to round out the depth chart could become available. I can guarantee you no one will shell out Gaustad-type money for a guy like Boyd Gordon.

Being a cap team is easy if you want to throw money down a hole. Being a good cap team is more difficult, and Poile has to be able to make a mistake and get out of it. When push comes to shove - and, if we're aggressive in rebuilding, that will happen relatively soon - Gaustad will become a cap casualty. There's no sense in delaying the inevitable.

you have lost your calculator if you think this is similar to the Dumont situation. Dumont was one year, Gaustad has three years left.

So 6 million dollars is spent, regardless. The only situation in which buying Gaustad out makes any sense is if we somehow need cap room, which is highly unlikely after dumping Erats 4.5 million.

So if we dont need the cap space, then I think its well worth the extra 1 million per year to see if we can get a good season or two out of Gaustad. What does it hurt to let him try to earn his money?

If by some miracle we spend enough money on free agents that we actually need Gaustads 3 million in cap space, well then I wont have nearly as much problem with a buyout because obviously we will have found the secret gold mine that lets us spend like Philly or New York...

There is no reason to buy out Goose unless we're pressed for cap space. If we get to the point (somehow) where we have to do so to bring in Horton or Clowe or whoever, we need to look at it harder.

The problem with Gaustad has been injuries. On the ice, he is dominant in the faceoff circle and supports his teammates on the cycle winning battles in the corners and at the net. He gets pucks to the net and supports puck possession by his linemates through his efforts.

He's getting his shoulders fixed this summer. They were damaged when we acquired him from Buffalo and it was a known issue. This season his injuries clearly didn't allow him to live up to his salary, but now that they are being corrected his performance will hopefully pick up moving forward.

Gaustad is a guy that you need in your bottom-six. He's a guy that wins faceoffs deep in the defensive zone when you are holding a lead late or wins the draw in the offensive zone and gets to the net as a big body in front when you need that tying goal. He's a last minute type of guy that coaches and teammates alike love. His contract is an overpayment on it's face, especially considering the lack of ROI this season, but moving forward if you buy him out you are not only paying him not to play, but are also needing to acquire a guy to replace him (Spaling is not the answer - doesn't have the size or faceoff ability and is being shifted to LW) and that is not a simple solution.

Bottom line for me is yes, Gaustad is overpaid. No, Gaustad will likely not live up to his salary over the life of the contract. But, he is under contract, he is not a desirable trade asset at the moment, and when healthy he does provide value to the team that cannot be replaced by anyone on the roster. Ergo, he is not a good candidate for a buyout in my opinion.

So, Halischuck is also having "shoulder stabilization" surgery? What's up with 3 of our players requiring the same shoulder surgery? Just bad luck, or some kind of deficit in our strength and conditioning program?

Also saw Peks is injured and getting an MRI soon. That would explain his weird year.

And finally, SK has an MCL injury. I hate on him a lot (I like to call him our new JP Dumont), and he definitely has a lot of problems, but he did play in whatever role the Preds asked him to all year without complaining. Hopefully his bad year is mainly due to injury and he'll be better next year.

Is there a stat somewhere that shows man games missed for the Preds as compared to the rest of the league? It certainly seems like a lot. Of course, it wouldn't reflect the critical nature of the guys that were injured...
