About as easy as it was for Canada to beat the vaunted Scott Gordon last year I suppose.

Indifferent is a great way to describe it. Not to say I'm thrilled with Sacco as the coach but the US rarely has a coach I'm overly thrilled about here anyway. The teams are doomed by the overwhelming lack of regard for this tournament within USA Hockey and especially so with the players they pursue. And while the uninspired coaching choices certainly play a part in that, it's tough to hold it against USAH when the tournament starts in about 2 1/2 weeks. With that, I understand the desire to have a coach in place. And given that immediate need, you basically had 4 NHL head coaching choices: Joe Sacco, Jon Cooper, Ron Rolston, and Peter Laviolette. As brand new NHL coaches, I bet Cooper and Rolston declined (if asked) to focus on their current teams. I would assume Laviolette declined given the turmoil in Philadelphia. Sacco isn't an inspired pick but there weren't many other options.

I would have liked to have seen Rolston to be honest. He was a bit sketchy at the u20 level, but I like what he's doing with the Sabres. He's not afraid to ride the hot hand or sit guys that are struggling.

I'll be interested to see if Thomas plays. Wouldn't be surprised.

Meh, Sacco isn't a terrible choice for a short term tournament.

Then who is a "terrible" choice?

Playoff picture getting clearer by the day. I'm hopeful that guys like Faulk, E. Johnson, Carle, Stastny, and Bishop commit soon.

In looking at who's available I'm feeling pretty confident they should be able to put together a solid defense and adequate goaltending but they'll need a lot more forwards to say "yes" than we've typically seen in years past to have reasonable scoring. Hopefully the fact that the Olympics are coming within a year will motivate players to participate.

I agree. I get the vibe more guys appear to be interested in playing this year. Probably helps that:

* It's in Sweden
* Shortened NHL season
* Olympic roster spot at stake

@ice_chip: Gleason says he will not play in World Championships with Team USA. Faulk hopes to play.

[Ben] Bishop, Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Justin Faulk and Colorado Avalanche center Paul Stastny have committed to play for the Americans.

Players who seem likely to sign on include Tampa Bay defenseman Matt Carle and forward Nate Thompson and Calgary Flames defenseman Chris Butler, plus Florida Panthers forward Nick Bjugstad.

Bishop, Faulk, Stastny is good. Carle and Thompson would be good additions as well. Butler and Bjugstad are reaches but not unexpected.

no matter what anyone says about Stastny, the guy has been answering the call. I have nothing but respect for him I just wish he was playing like he was 3-4 years ago..

Bogosian simply has no luck health wise. He may go down as one of those guys that never reaches their potential because they cant stay healthy long enough.
