Vanek will play, if he get's the ok from the Sabres.

Before it’s off into the holidays and already start preparation for the next season, I really, really want to play for the Austrian national team at the world championships. I’m still waiting for clearance from the Sabres but I’ll talk to them today and after that all should be ok.

Are you talking about getting injury clearance by the team? Or does he need permission generally to be allowed to play?

No idea, I posted the link to his blog.
He wasn't allowed to play at last years event because the Sabres said no.
Last year was it because of injury, so I think it'll probably because of injuries again.

For Vanek---it depends on treatment he needs to do in the offseason for him to be able to play. I think last year he had an injury at the end of the season so he couldnt play.

Possibles (excluding injured guys and guys who can be sent to Rochester):

Slovakia: Sekera
Germany: Ehrhoff, Hecht
Canada: Hodgson, Ott, Ennis, Foligno, Pardy, Scott
USA: Gerbe, Kaleta, Miller, Porter, Ruhwedel, Stafford, Weber
Austria: Vanek
Sweden: Enroth

I expect Sekera very likely to go. Maybe Enroth? Canada I could see any of the first 4, Pardy if they are really desperate from people declining. USA: Miller should play IMO, but he's declined in the past. But short season...he should play. If he wants to be in Sochi, he should play. Stafford and Weber would be nice to see there. Gerbe and Porter likely get picked given Team USA's track record of picking 3rd/4th liners for the entire roster.

If Vanek plays for Austria, his first game will be against the United States (with Miller? Gerbe? Porter? Stafford? Weber?) on Saturday, May 4. Going to have to get up early to watch this one LIVE - 5:15 am ET faceoff - on NBC Sports Network in the United States and TSN in Canada. Canadas first game vs Denmark will be later that morning - 10:15 am ET faceoff - LIVE on TSN. All United States games, all quarterfinal games, both semfinal games, the bronze medal game and the gold medal game will be televised on NBC Sports Network.

Heres a link to the schedule - includes TSN/TSN2 TV Coverage - http://www.tsn.ca/canadian_hockey/feature/?id=77678

Why would they do this...

Was there really no one better out there? I guess I'll just try to keep and open mind and hope for the best.

I would expect any player under contract to need his team's permission, even if it's a mere formality; certainly for a guy with nagging injuries it's more than a formality. I'd imagine the team would want to discuss things to ensure there's ample time for training after treatment and any possible clean-up surgeries.

This has been covered in a number of places but the short answer: he was not on the AHL playoff roster list and is signed to a pro deal, not an ATO/PTO, so he can not play for them in the playoffs this year. Next, sure, but not right now. There is more info on it in the Amerks thread.

Wonder if the Sabres were more open to Vanek playing since they may want to talk him into staying.

First 15 players named to the United States team - no Sabres in lineup yet - ex-Sabre Chris Butler on defense - http://mensworlds.usahockey.com/news...rrer_id=780184

Yeesh, looking at that lineup - hopefully Gerbe, Stafford, or heck Miller decided to play.
(Also another reason to root for the Wild to be eliminated so we can get Pominville, Parise and Suter)

Phil Housley named one of the assistant coaches -

Heres info on NBC Sports Networks coverage of the World Championships:

Five of the Seven United States Preliminary Round games will be LIVE - first game is this Saturday morning vs Austria - 5:00 am ET. Games vs Russia, Finland, France and Slovakia will also be televised LIVE.

The Latvia game (Sunday, May 5-1:00 pm ET start) will be televised on NBC Sports Network on Monday, May 6 - 1:00 am ET. Theres a 12 hour Tape Delay due to almost 13 hours worth of LIVE NHL playoff coverage - 12:00 pm ET-1:00 am ET - on NBC/NBC Sports Network this coming Sunday, May 5. The Germany game will be televised on a 90 minute Tape Delay on Sunday, May 12 - 10:30 am ET. NBC Sports Network will be televising a LIVE Formula One Race - Spanish Grand Prix - when the United States-Germany game will be starting at 9:00 am ET. If you can't wait the 12 hours to watch the Latvia game on TV or the 90 minutes to watch the Germany game on TV, you can watch it LIVE via the NBCSports.com LIVE Extra stream - see below for more info.

All the Quarterfinal games will be televised LIVE. Coverage plans for the Semifinals/Bronze Medal and Gold Medal games will be announced at a later date.

All of the United States games will be streamed LIVE via NBC Sports.com LIVE Extra - thats if your cable company has worked out a deal with NBC Universal. I know Time Warner Cable is not on board. Doesn't look like any non United States games - be it in the Quarterfinals/Semifinals/Bronze Medal/Gold Medal games - will be streamed.

NBCSN will be using TSNs announcers for the games - Paul Romanuk (Play By Play) and Shane Hindy (Analyst). NBCSN will produce their own pre-game, intermission and post-game with Ross Thaler and Anson Carter providing analysis.

Five Added to 2013 U.S. Men's National Team - USAHockey.com - Monday, April 29.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado. - Goaltender John Gibson (2013 World Junior Championship Gold Medalist) and forwards Ryan Carter (New Jersey Devils), Stephen Gionta (New Jersey Devils), Drew LeBlanc (Chicago Blackhawks/2013 Hobey Baker Winner-St. Cloud State University) and David Moss (Phoenix Coyotes) have been added to the the 2013 United States National Team that will compete at the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship.

Team USA's roster now includes twelve forwards, eight defensemen and three goaltenders on its roster. The maximum roster size is twenty-five, which includes three goaltenders and twenty-two forwards and defensemen.

http://mensworlds.usahockey.com/news...rrer_id=780184

Well no Gerbe, Stafford and Porter for the United States. They will probably use their last two roster spots on players whose teams are eliminated in the first round. (Parise or Suter if Wild get eliminated early? Pominville probably not now that he is injuried.)

Paul Hamilton said Gerbe was invited but declined in order to rest his back. I wonder about Stafford though. I imagine he just wants to get away from the rink.
