Stauffer yesterday talked on his show about hiring another Asst Coach.

His comments seemed somewhat telling.

"They need a third guy and will get someone with Asst Coach'ing experience. Er... head coaching experience. Someone with North American experience. Someone who has been in the league."

It sounded like Ruff to a T, that they would do the same thing with him that they did with Renney and Krueger. Hire him as an Asst just to have a coach-in-waiting. Again. (Why not just fire the guy then?)

It was just odd, because he caught himself definitely saying they would hire an assistant coach and changed it to coach. Plus Ruff has been on Tencer's show.

I agree, I felt the same way at the time.
boy were we wrong.
don't know if anyone had mentioned it, but Krueger's quality of motivational speaking (by the way the oilers have played) is more and more looking like that chris farley motivational speaker that lives in a van down by the river.

I really doubt Ruff would accept an assistant job here unless he can't get a full time job elsewhere, but given playoff upsets and other teams just looking to make changes, he likely would have a choice of a head coaching gig somewhere else.

If he is a better coach than Krueger, then the Oilers need to man up, simply put, fire Krueger and offer Ruff the head coaching position soon after the regular season is over. And that goes for the entire coaching staff too (bye, bye).

I agree I'm in this camp too I bought it hook line and sinker but not anymore. I had to laugh at the people who came out of the MacT pressor saying man I'll give him a chance because he said all the right things. Hasn't anyone realized that's all this management group is is a PR machine.

If I was trying to sell ocean front property in Arizona then absolutely 100% I'd hire this team in an instant. Starting with Pat LaForge and KLowe at the top. Unfortunately we are trying to build a hockey team and these clowns have no idea what's going on. Could anyone imagine how much worse this team would look if we hadn't gotten the top pick 3 years running.

Could you imagine all this junk we have but instead of Yak, Hall and RNH if we had Connolly, Landeskog/Huberdeau and Murray/Galchenyuk. WOW, I think Kevin would even have a hard time saying half the teams in this league would trade rosters with us. But of course he would still proceed to spew it anyways.

Yes he is. Is Babcock a ****** coach because clearly Detroit was only good because of Lidstrom.

Ease up Reimer. It was a simple question from someone who does not follow the Sabres at all. All I have to go on are his stats.

Bring back Ron Low...I remember him being a short leash type of coach and one that seemed to light a fire under players. This team lacks a few things aside from playing with an edge, taking the body and simply just skating with a purpose. They need a coach that knows when to vent and how to channel that right on down through his players.

He must be, he wasn't coaching the Oilers

Give a coach a bad roster and they'll do poorly, Ruff is no exception. Babchuk is one of the best coaches in the league, but he loses Lidstrom and they are struggling to make the playoffs with rumors that he's on his way out. Coaches aren't miracle workers, without a major team overhaul, anyone the Oilers hire is going to look bad.

There were a lot of rumors last year that the Oilers were holding off on the Kreuger decision because they were waiting to see what Buffalo did with Ruff though. So everyone might get their wish and we'll see some more deck chair shuffling on the Titanic.

I can't picture ruff being that good when he can't take a team with a star in all three positions to the playoffs in an inferior conference.

That said he's likely an improvement over what we've got

Why does everyone say that the East is an inferior conference? Other than Chicago this year and bit of the Ducks and Kings the rest would not be beating Pitts, Boston, a bit of Montreal, and now Washington is back. The conferences are pretty equal, both conferences have their duds.

Do any of the current Oiler coaches have any previous experience? Bucky doesn't, I know that. How about the others?

I wanted Sutter over Kruger last year, and I want Ruff>Sutter>Kruger now.

God it would be nice to have a normal organization.. one that let their GM pick the coaches, and one that lets their head coach pick the assistants. You would think an experienced coach like Ruff wouldn't take the position unless he could pick his assistants as well.

Ever see the Southeast division?

All the teams you mentioned got exposed last year. The Devils came out of that conference and even then the Kings still brushed them aside.

Kruger needs to go come up with game plans for the Swiss again.

He's not used to NHL hockey enough to try out a big pairing. I was really happy when Tambo traded for Fistric actually, but Kruger still didn't use him.

I hope our next coach gives guys like Peckham, Teubert, and Fistric (maybe) a chance. These guys likely didn't have it for every game this year, but Teubert was a great friend with Eberle and I think playing together would bring some passion back into his game. All guys mentioned are more the style of players needed to help balance out the softness that is our top 6. We love the top 6 guys, but they don't have much edge to their game.

I was on board with keeping him, but I have changed my mind. He clearly does not have the room. I want experienced coach that brings in his own assistants. Bucky and smith can go bye bye

Its certainly a reasonable question. I would wonder how much mileage is left in Babcock as well. My own take is theres a shelf life for sermon on the mount coaches like Babcock, Hitchcock, Keenan types.
History suggest that after a decade these guys are spent forces that nobody listens to.

The East is suspect defensively. Few if any of the clubs there would advance in WC playoffs. Any of the Hawks, Kings, Preds, Nucks, Yotes, Sharks, would've been good enough to prevail against the EC finalist Devils last year. Who are curiously such a normal team that they couldn't make the playoffs in the same weak knee EC this year. Theres not much cream in the east, a lot of spoiled milk.

To be fair they lost Parise and Broduer for a good chunk of the season.

So Kreuger is only following the same pattern that is expected of all coaches...including Ruff and Babchuk. Why is it that he should be fired immediately if he is no different from the apparent "saviors"?

He shouldn't, he was set up to fail just like the coaches before him, so would any coaches hired after him. Until they provide a coach with a team that isn't a top line of 20 year old first rounders backed by three lines of "which way do you want to lose this game today?", there will be zero success no matter who is coaching.

The players campaigned for Kreuger, management made their choice with him, time to own it. The team should be fixing the real problems rather than scapegoating someone every year for their own failures in player acquisition and team building.

Who did they get exposed by last year? And the Kings were on fire during the Playoffs. But this year each conference has a few great teams. Yeah the Southeast sucks, sorta like the Northwest.
