On here maybe, by NHL scouts and GMs doubtful.

I don't, which is why I see Giroux getting the maximum 8 years at close to $8 million per year.

But as of today their career PPG is almost exactly the same.

How Does Giroux deserve more than those 2?

Keep in mind he already took the hometown discount on his current contract. It's time for the guy to get paid, and I think he's a more talented player than Getzy or Pears.

He got a pretty standard three-year bridge deal.

As the great Clint Eastwood said, "Deserves got nothing to do with it".

My guess is 8 years for a 8.375 cap hit. Anything under 8 and I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Now yes he does have only one year left of RFA, but that was clearly done on purpose. Next year he will be getting paid 5.5 million, so he will be getting a raise from that salary. He doesn't have the ability to just take a one year deal, the Flyers have the ability to offer one year deal though. He doesn't have the ability to talk to every single team in the NHL and weigh offers, he can though get offers from other teams. He doesn't hold all the cards. The Flyers set up his contract situation perfectly. Also there is no way Giroux only accepts a one year deal. If he does that, I would look to move him if they can't agree to a longer contract. He is proven though, and the captain, he will re-sign for the long term and for less than 9 million.

I am just going to agree to disagree here. This will just continually go in a circle.
Everything goes in circles here! That's what HFBoards is all about! I haven't had a four page argument with Beef for a couple months now. I thought maybe you would take over for him, or at least pinch hit.

Bro, Homer does not suck. Scottie Upshall sucks.

EDIT: Also what ever happened to that guy Jester? He was like my arch enemy for a while then he disappeared. He was fun to go back and forth with. I liked him despite our inability to ever agree on anything, including facts.

The last time I remember him posting was around the Richards and Carter trades. Even then, that was only a cameo appearance. I agreed with a lot of what he said, but wasn't he the one leading the charge that Giroux would top out as a "Scott Gomez" type player with 20ish goals and 45-50 assists?

No idea. He was a good poster though. Always fun to debate with.

No, that's what he expected from Richards.

On topic, why does anyone expect Giroux to give the Flyers a hometown discount? He'd be a moron to do so, after seeing Richards, Carter, JVR and potentially Bryz.

What discount did Bryz give the Flyers? I fail to see how that nine year $51M contract is a discount in any way, shape, or form.

That said I wouldn't expect G to give the Flyers any discount, nor should he. He should aim to get as much as he can.

I think she means how they were jettisoned after signing their extensions.

Well, that makes more sense then.

Hockey is a business just like all other sports. A long extension doesn't guarantee anything in the NHL except that the player will get paid. If there is no active NMC/NTC then you should always know there is a chance to be traded no matter what.

Exactly - sign a long term contract in Philly; don't buy a house. JVR didn't really sign at a discount either, but he did sign a relatively long term deal with the intention of staying in Philadelphia.

It is, but if Giroux signs a long term deal in the near future, his NTC won't kick in for another year, and he could be sent elsewhere if the wind blows the wrong way in Philly.

Well all of those players deserve(d) to be gone. Richards and Carter couldn't act like professionals, JVR didn't live up to expectations and neither is Bryz. Im sure G knows if he just does what's expected from him, he will be fine.

Upshall may suck. But the guy he was traded for sucks and blows.

Anyway, I am going to go with 68/8 for Giroux. full NMC once his UFA years kick in.
