That would be a serious setback...

I feel like this is a realistic issue that might arise in the next few years

I bet he goes back under the knife when the season is done and once they've had a chance to re-evaluate everything.

Something clearly went awry here. Either the surgery was bunged up, or there was something that happened post surgery that is majorly setting him back from where he should be.

I'm not even gonna discuss his career potentially being threatened. I just don't even want to go there right now.

considering the fragile state of the sens board I don't think we need the added anxiety of talking about spezza's career being over. That being said, I think we should not expect him back this season/postseason. hope for the best next season.

Is this something that started in Europe during the lockout? Because it was initially reported that there was pain in the back during training camp.

Well it's not looking good for Jason as far as we've been told

It's a legitimate concern going forward because he's our best forward by a very large margin

This injury pisses me off. Spezza should have undergone treatment way earlier, and he is partially to blame for that.

I had a back injury almost two decades ago and I still feel it from time to time. It has to be one of the tougher injuries to heal, and I can speak from experience that if you push even a tiny bit too hard one time you will be set back.

The team has been doing all right, and I think the priority will be (and should be) to have Spezza ready to go for the start of next season. There is no point to pushing it for the same of maybe winning one or two extra playoff games in one post season.

It's his 2nd back surgery, and you just don't undertake them lightly in any circumstance. We don't really know if having it done earlier would have helped at all.

I can assure everyone here his career is not in jeopardy. My source won't tell me much anymore about whats going on.

I honestly do not expect to see him again this season/playoffs. He is making baby steps. Thats it.

I don't think anybody could realistically say if his career will be in jeopardy.

Nobody is saying this injury alone will cause his career to be over. But if he has recurring back issues, then you might see his career not last into his late thirties.

My ex-step-mother-in-law was a nurse for 20+ years and had back issues especially later in her career. Surgeon will not operate on backs if there is swelling (to close to the spinal cords) and swelling takes months to decrease. Swelling can also send shooting pain down the legs and weaken muscle function and make sleeping difficult.
So IMO, Spezza overdid his rehab, and his herniated disc swelled causing him great discomfort. But nothing can be done until the swelling goes down which requires often month of limited activity.
My mother-in-law back disc swelling, (granted she is older than Spezza and aggravated her back over many more years) is still giving her problems 8 months after her injury.
I don't think we'll see Spezza in the playoff, I am hopeful for pre-season but backs don't respond quickly.

As I said before, career ending injury/surgery. He is done like dinner. Sad but true. Murray is shopping this summer.

Well you should have been more forceful earlier and we wouldn't have had to waste our time with this thread...

Murray and everyone else is shopping for a player of Spezza's caliber at all times...there aren't many out there.

so you advocate for jumping to conclusions.

We have no idea, and my point is that people need to relax.

Clearly Spezza isn't injured at all. The secret plan was to pretend all our star players were injured, giving them plenty of time to rest and go on a deep playoff run. No career ending injury, your fell for BMs trickery.

I'll try to weigh in here, as I have been suffering for years with the same problem. Herniated discs are very temperamental. You got two options, rest and wait - the approach I was given to take - which can either heal within a year or just not heal (unfortunately for me, I've had it for like 6 years now); or surgery where they just shave off the part of the disc that has been displaced.

They say though, once you have them, you get them often and the risk of it reoccurring after surgery is high, especially for athletes or physically active individuals. The recovery time for a surgery isn't very long because it doesn't impact the muscles or his strength, and one should feel a lot better - surgery doesn't take very long.

There's no complications when it comes to this surgery, it's simply a concern of it reoccurring.

Cut to the achilles isnt the same as chronic back issues...

What I find weird is that Spezza didnt get Doc Chow to do his surgery... I believe he performed Alfie's surgery a few years back and everything went great...

If only they could pump Spezza up with roids and HGH to get him back healthy... Would be nice...
