And Crosby is a generational talent. Maybe Nylander is too. Time will tell. I`m not a scout, and don`t profess to be. But to me, Malkin is a prototypical 1C.

I think size is very overrated, unless you happen to be a slower skater. I don't think Nylander will have much of a problem since he's advertised as a shifty, agile, speedy player. His hockey sense should help him avoid getting pasted every shift. And I'd say RNH fits the description, he went 1 overall in 2011.

I think Nylander could be that missing piece.

And I'm not sold on RNH TBH. He has yet to figure out how to translate his skill to ES play at the NHL level, and could end up a PP specialist. Hardly franchise material. Good player no doubt, but not "let's purposefully throw our entire season down the toilet"-good.

But really, you don't tank a season under any circumstances when you have a roster of the calibre the NYR have. If you tank, you'll have to replace a huge part of that roster before you can become competitive again as that locker room will just be DEAD. It would also likely hurt the development of our younger guys. Not a good plan.

Re. Nylander Jr.; he seems to have a slight attitude problem. He seems REALLY cocky, and not the good supremely-confident type cocky like say J.T. Miller, but the bad "I'm awesome and I'm going to rub it in everyone's face" kind of cocky. That kind of cocky can lead to a player that is hard to coach and who refuses to work on his weaknesses because he can get away with relying on his strengths.

Hopefully playing alongside his dad who definitely isn't like that will tone it down, and if they go to the SEL like rumoured, it should also give him a reality check in what the pro game will require.

I'd much rather have a guy that has a great brain but only average to above average everything else (with a good work ethic) than a guy that has great skill but an average to above average brain (even with a good work ethic). He's worked and improved on his skating and shot. He's not a scrub when it comes to those things. He's on pace for almost 30 goals. Yes Nash is a much better than expected playmaker, but he's not playing with a prime Jagr on his wing.

You know who else didn't have good tools? Gretzky. Short and extremely skinny (5-10 145 pounds as a 20 year old), not fast, looked like a little girl getting spanked in his only fight (in his second season), just terrible all around tools. All he had was a brain and the ability to pass. And ability to make use of the "The Mr. Gretzky's Office" behind the net.

There are two things he can practice that would make him an elite player. One is to shoot better. He can practice on his own or with a coach or a goalie. If he learns to shoot a little stronger, release a little faster and be a little more accurate, he would become a double threat offensively (shooting and passing).

The other thing he needs to improve on is his face-off ability, which is more difficult because he needs random partners to practice this. You can't just go up against the same guy because he'll just learn to cheat against that particular guy's ability. But it wouldn't be the worst thing if the Rangers created a faceoff training camp for young kids like Stepan, Miller, St. Croix, Nieves, Jean and even Lindberg.

If Step improving his faceoff skill, it would lead to fewer goals against and more goals for, increasing both his point total and his +/-.

If he did these two things, he'd be a point per game franchise player. Neither requires tremendous improvement, but little things can make a big difference. As in being a $4M player vs. $7M player.

The best bet on Lindberg info is asking Cerny on Twitter or in a Blueshirts United chat. He told me the other day that he was gonna ask Gorton.

At the game today they did a prospect update on the jumbotron and it was on Lindberg. They showed his playoff stats and talked about his MVP win.

Lindberg will most likely play for Team Sweden at the WC. Nylander Jr is not a cocky guy. He is however a generational talent. His move to the SEL is not yet confirmed.

Good call. Let's tank a whole season in order to have a better percentage in a lottery where hopefully a guy is a franchise player and hopefully we land a top pick.

Upper management is written all over you.

Ryan O'Reilly was our guy, but Calgary screwed us...

Good to hear, I have huge hopes for him!

I have to admit I had based my opinion on his personality from a lengthy TV-interview and his on-ice mannerisms in very limited viewings. Not a very big sample size.

I know that you have very good SSK connections through your brother, so I'd take your word over mine any day.

BTW. Are the Nylander's staying in SSK, and if not how likely is it that they end up in AIK?

I also get the impression that he is. He can definitely be quite selfish with the puck at times and back checking does not exist in his game. Everything about his offensive game, skating, shot, vision is elite though.

It's great to have a franchise superstar 1st line center, but they're rare. If Stepan keeps up this play next season, he will be a legit #1 center in the league. He's 12th in center scoring in the league this year, just behind Datsyuk, just ahead of guys like Thornton.

Averaging a point per game, or 70+ points over a full season absolutely makes one a 1st line center and saying that's a "good 2nd line center on a cup team" is ridiculous. Stepan has also addressed most of his weaknesses and people still calling him slow or weak are off base

That's all to say, tanking with the intention of drafting a 1st line center is silly, especially since no one actually does that. The Rangers need to lock Stepan up and give him the responsibility of leading this team offensively and look for more legit goalscorers in the draft.

Derek's face-off % has been getting better since his rookie year. He's also a + 22 in 45 games--really good player at both ends of the ice. Plays all situations. Pro rated over an 82 game schedule he'd be around 30 goals and 75 points with a + 40. Most teams would be happy to have that kind of production from their top center.

I have a better idea. Trade Boyle plus our 2014 2nd rounder (then unfortunately meaning that we do not Make the ECF 2013 - or resign Clowe) for a 1st rounder next year - maybe to Montreal - and then get extremely lucky in the lottery and get to draft Nylander...

I think AIK will be the destination for at least one Nylander. Maybe both. Nothing definite yet

Let's trade for someone's 2015 first rounder and pray to God that we can draft Connor McDavid.

Why not have us "win the lottery with someone elses pick" in both 2014 and 2015 - with us in addition winning the SC both years. Pittsburgh redux. Gary would shut down the league if we won two lotteries and two SCs to match..

Been out with a reaggrevated knee injury - not too serious it appears - since he scored a goal in CT. Could in theory see postseason play, but we will likely first see him back in camp
