Would you trade weber to a team that offered first overall this year, plus (example) Adam Larsson and zack kassian??

Nope. Giving up the best player in the deal who's signed to a lifetime contract. Couldn't justify it even for that package.

Monahan - Wilson - Forsberg

Plus we've got Bourque and Beck looking like they can nail down the 2nd line winger spots. That's exciting.
So pretty much wherever the team finishes there is a talented option ... with or without tanking.

Yeah that's true. What kind of contract is stamkos on though?

3 years, 7.25M after this year is up. They'll have quite a few contracts off the books to give him a raise over that by the time that is up. I'm not going to do the TBL fans the disservice done to us by suggesting he will want out after that, but...<shrug>.

Fair enough! I guess that is a no go trade then. Just me being greedy with assets! Lol, my bad guys.

But I guess what my point is that unless we get an elite-ish NHL player that is also under 25, not a vanek, there is no point in trading the pick, just draft Mack, drouin or barkov and develop a young star (hopefully/likely) and also pay him a ton less cash for first three years!

I always liked the idea of drafting your star players and this is perfect chance. If getting guys like stamkos is out of question, poile do what you gotta do and get us Mack! 'Nuff said!

FWIW, if I was Tampa, I wouldn't trade Stamkos for Weber straight up, if we were to offer that.

It's always worth sounding out potential offers, but that doesn't necessarily mean we want to move the pick. You just never know what kind of ridiculous offer another GM may throw your way.

As talented as Jones is, our defensive pipeline remains better stocked than our potential top six forward depth. With where we probably end up, a quality forward choice exists no matter which scouting ranks you decide to use.

First, apologies to you and the board for my contributions to the closed GDT- I lived up to my board name. Only constructive posts for the balance of the season.

Second, I agree we need and will get a high end forward. Slotted between 2 and 7, we are sitting pretty. Poile and Fenton and the crew really need to get this one right, particularly if they are in the 4-7 range and don't have the luxury of conventional wisdom to make the pick for them.

ISS ranks the forwards as #2 overall Nichushkin, #3 MacKinnon, #4 Drouin, #5 Barkov, #8 Lindholm, #9 Monahan, #10 Horvat. Central Scouting puts them at #2 MacKinnon, #3 Drouin, #5 Monahan for NA forwards, and Barkov, Nichushkin, Lindholm as #1-3 international skaters.

To not get one of those players requires the Preds winning out against two desperate teams while Edmonton, Carolina and Calgary each lose at least once after today; a team outside of the bottom 7 wins the lottery; and only one defender going before we pick.

The talent is there no matter where we likely pick this season.

"Talent" is a very broad term.

Jonathan Toews (#3 overall) has talent and so does Derek Brassard (#6 overall). But they are on different levels.

It can work the opposite way too. Look at 2003 draft, Nathan Horton and Nik Zherdev go #3 and #4. Hortons a decent NHL player, but so many all-stars were selected after them.

I just hope Poile and scouts get it right.

Winning the lottery would be great but I would call florida right away and see if they want Jones. May be able to get someting out of them to move up that 1 spot. If they do then Draft Mack and if they don't still draft Mack imo.

Thank goodness we will pretty much know Monday night. Then again even when we know the Pick they have there will be speculation of who. We start to picture DP as the troll from Lord of The Rings looking for precious.

My favorite scenario is we win the #1 and trade down a spot or two, get the other team's 2nd rd pick, and still get Mac or Drouin.

I just don't know if FL would be a great trade partner. They could use help virtually everywhere - so they may be content to stay at #2 and grab Mac/Drouin.

It is interesting to speculate on - so many variables right now. What do the Preds do if they do indeed get #1? Trade it? Draft Jones? Grab Mac or Drouin instead? If the Preds end up at 4/5/6 does Poile trade up? Does he trade down to grab a 2nd rounder as well?

OK, so being awake most of the night last night, I started to do some research on the draft class outside of the Big 3 (Jones, MacKinnon, Drouin) and I'm fine with winding up 4th and selecting Barkov if that's where we wind up.

My preference is:
1) Drouin - No. 1 dynamic scoring winger potential. Less defensive responsibilities for wings in system = quicker development path and better long term payoff

2) MacKinnon - No. 1 skilled center potential.

3) Jones - Can't ignore the guy's talents. Would truly solidify defense for remainder of the decade.

4) Barkov - No. 1 power forward center potential. Already responsible defensively. Great size that he uses at both ends of the rink, skating will improve, fantastic hands.

Overall, as long as we finish 3rd or better, I think we are in good position even if we move back a spot due to the draft lottery.

Somewhat beat me to it, as I was about to post that, after some reading and seeing others opinions, Barkov may have joined in on "the big 3". I wouldn't mind having him at all. Only negative is that the power forwards usually take an extra year or so to develop their game at the NHL level.

Is Barkov the one coming off of knee surgery ?

I have done a lot of the same and I watched so many video clips of many of the top prospects. I really tried not to watch to many of the "highlight clip" though and tried to focus on real game play. This is how I would rank the forwards I watched.

#1) Mackinnon - Highly skilled. Very explosive with his skating. His vision and hands are very strong. He is solid in the D-zone and looks strong on face-offs. There really isn't much of a downside to this kid.

#2) Lindholm - You are probably surprised I have him this high but after watching tape he is very good at doing so many things. Strong skater with a very nice shot. He doesn't have the creativity like a Mack or Drouin does yet but his PK ability along with strong faceoff bring him up a good bit on my list. He goes hard to the net back checks like no other. I really think he is going to end up being the second best forward out of this draft.

#3) Barkov - For a 17 year old he is very impressive. He skates just fine but doesn't have the speed of a Mack/Drouin/Lindholm. His defensive play is scary good for someone his age. He isn't particularly great at face-offs yet but with his size he can improve. He is most definitely the best net front presence in this draft. He has very good hands but isn't going to wow you with amazing moves one on one.

#4) Drouin - A dynamic winger that can wow you with his moves and explosiveness. He is decent defensively but his size limits him in that aspect. Playing wing helps that though so it isn't as big an issue. His vision and creativity are very strong. I have him down to 4th because I truly think his size is going to hurt him a bit in the NHL. I do not see him being able to be strong on the puck in the NHL.

So that is how I would rank them when it comes to helping the Predators out the most. Drouin would be higher for most other teams but we do not need another smallish winger on this team. If we were picking 3rd and Mack and Jones were gone I would seriously look into moving down to take Lindholm at that point.

I hope we do whatever it takes to get Mackinnon IMO. It's are shot to be able to get that centerman who can take this team to the next level. What will that take if we don't win the lottery and Fla takes Jones??

If we are picking 3rd and Florida keeps the #1 spot we should be in good shape to get Mack. I really think the Avs will go after Drouin even if they plan to move O-reily or Stasney. The probelm will come in if the Av's win the top pick. Florida will take Mack at #2 in a heart beat.

I actually agree and disagree.

The defensive pipeline isn't really all that stocked anymore, at least not with top four talent.

Ekholm- #4, but has shown signs of trouble adapting to NA ice.
Ellis- third pairing\PP specialist
Blum- third pairing

Everyone else...COR, Bitetto, Aronson, Lainonen, Karlsson, Fernholm-- if they make the NHL, it's likely as a third pairing.

There's no one with top pairing upside in the system, and really only one with top four. On the forward side, Colin Wilson is already here, FF is close in terms of top line forwards. Second line forwards-- Beck, Aberg. 2\3 line tweeners-- Leipsic, Watson

I would prefer to have Drouin or Mackinnon (or even Barkov\Lindholm, in that order of 4), but it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to add another top pairing defenseman, especially one that could comfortably bump Josi to the second pairing(where I think he would be set up better for success)

The top 4 defenseman we need, we need now, it needs to be addressed through FA not through the draft, IMHO.
