Schefter, McShay, et al. reporting that Tavon Austin might be on the radar at 8, and that the Bills are worried the Jets might take Nassib with one of their 2 first rounders if the Bills trade down too far--he is definitely a real possibility at this point.
That's almost certainly a smokescreen to lure teams to trade-up.
We're so damn desperate for talent at the QB position. We simply have to draft one with a top pick. I don't see any way around it, unfortunately. I'm only in favor of moving a few picks back (4-5 picks), and only if their pretty damned sure noone will grab their guy. I wouldn't risk it, personally.
I know where you're coming from. They really need to get their guy, whomever that might be. Unfortunately that person may also be a terrible value at the eighth spot, and thus be a greater risk for failure. If you look at the teams below Buffalo in round one, only the Jets have a strong shot of taking one of the QB's. So if I'm the Bills, and I want Barkley or Smith let's say, I trade down with St. Louis for example, gather an extra second, and take that QB. I don't know that the risk is too great.
Watch for Geno Smith to be the guy. I know there has been very little to attach him to Buffalo, but that seems to be Buddy Nix's MO. He seems to try and dissuade attention from players he really wants. As was said above, he clearly was using the smokescreen effect with Glenn last year. This whole Tavon Austin thing has got to be a smokescreen, or someone needs to be fired from OBD for allowing that to leak. My guess is it will be someone no one is really focusing on anymore, like Geno Smith or Lane Johnson if he's still there.
Mayock was the only one who had Whitner coming to Buffalo in 06 when everyone and their mother picked Ngata
The only legit pick in this draft would be to select a guard at #8. Either Warmack or Cooper. A road grader type who can push the pile. God knows were not going to be able to do much on offense so might as well give Spiller and Jackson the best opportunity to move the chains
No love for Tavon Awesome? My brother is a junior at WVU, so I've endured more Mountaineer football over the last three years than I'd care to admit. He may not be what you need, but he's going to be very successful. He's certainly a wild card in any offense.
I have seen more than enough WVU football on TV next to you and likely more than the rest here/ I am certain about one thing...Geno is a BUST!
