Harrelson is a complete clown. He does nothing but spew cliches and platitudes. "The will to win" "instincts" "this is a kid's game" "leadership" LOL just LOL. Typical old man who doesn't understand any ideas post 1990.

Harrelson made some good points, there are many things you can't quatify with numbers, sure we are getting better and better at judging these things but at the end of the day there will never be some stat that tells you everything you need to know about a player.

I still don't know where people get the idea that sabremetrics replaces scouting... It's a tool used to compare similar players based on mathematical odds. I think way too many people have watched Moneyball and not read the book.

You don't need anything about Moneyball. Just get on BR or Fangraphs and look at the the different categories of data available. Now ask yourself, if this information valuable to have? Anyone who says no is a complete moron.

Hawk has lost his might. Time to retire old guy. Now the guy I grew up loving in the 90s.
That was brutal...

I've never been a big Stone fan. He's a very, very smart guy, no doubt. He just comes across as too whiney for me.

Same here. Only bought CI this year because it was like $50 or $60. Will definitely be paying the full amount next year if I still have cable or a dish that offers it. It has been awesome. Not only that, but I know for a fact I've gotten more than double my money back by just staying in the house many nights using it to watch hockey, and not going out to the bar or whatever.

I went to a Braves game lately, with tickets in the players family section or whatever... And there were a ton of scouts by us, at least 5 within 6-7 seats in any direction. They all still scouted "old school" style with a radar gun of their own, stop watch, stuff like that.

I heard the Hawk interview too. Yeah, he makes some good points but he is so far to the extreme of completely dismissing it that he comes off looking really bad. A lot of this stuff was revolutionary. I mean, OBP, how can you seriously argue OBP? He can't even see the full value in that.

Hawk is at least two kinds of extra special wrong. One is what Isaac Asimov described as “wronger than wrong,” where you’re clinging to outmoded beliefs and defending yourself by claiming that better ideas than yours are also incorrect and refusing to address your own deficiencies. Sabremetrics’ failure to be perfect is not a blanket justification to ignore all of it.

The other kind of extra special wrong Hawk stumbles into (in the same paragraph, no less!) is what Wolfgang Pauli called “not even wrong.” It’s when you make claims that can’t be refuted, and in doing so make claims that aren’t worth refuting. Hawk talks about “the will to win” (and believe me, he keeps repeating this) being the most important thing in baseball, and apparently it’s judged by how many wins you have. If you’ve won a lot, you had the will; if you didn’t, well, you didn’t.

People like Hawk will always roll out this line of thinking because it can’t be disproven, so they never reach a moment where they’re refuted and forced to actually quit. So what they never notice is that it’s also totally meaningless; you can only ever figure out who had the will to win after the fact, at which point it’s too late to do anything about it.

Hawk just needs to go away. He is a relic, a man way past his time. Plus he is an insufferable dick.

Lacked TWTW. Also only had 1 playoff appearance as a player and went 1 for 13 with a single and one walk. This is the last ****ing guy that should be explaining the will to win to people.

I hate when people use playoff records for guys who played the game before there really was playoffs...

Alright, how about calling out the organizations he played for to the point of getting released because of his mouth and ultimately taking his ball and going home at 29 years old? Does that sound like the ultimate competitor?

I'm not defending him. I'm just saying, the playoffs didn't expand until '69 and were still just 4 teams until '95. So using the playoff stats of anyone pre-'95 is a weak argument.

Our Tom Loxas has spoken to a source and says that although the Cubs have monitored Bryant, the sense in the organization is that the Cubs will take a pitcher and that it will be one of the top two college arms. Surprisingly, the source said that the arm they are leaning toward may not be Mark Appel after all.

I'd rather have the guy who can scratch 100 with a plus-plus breaking ball, so I'm happy with this.

I tend to like higher ceiling guys when we're talking college arms at the top of the draft.

Its close just as long as theres nothing mechanically wrong with the delivery like Kerry Wood.

Greg Maddux topped out around 91 but he could pinpoint like nobodys business.

Yeah, I love what both of these guys bring. I trust the Cubs will pick the right guy, this is what they do.
