Columbus is coming off a 4-1 roadtrip. They're playing Nashville, a team that simply can't score goals. At all. They're 29th in G/G, only in front of the Panthers. Columbus has the motivation, the 11th ranked defense (but surprisingly only 4th in the Central Division) and the goaltending.

There is no reason they shouldn't win this game. All they can hope is Dallas beats Detroit in regulation.

Ah, but you're forgetting one thing.

It's Columbus.

What exactly is Columbus in your opinion?

Bad things happen to them both brought upon by themselves and outside sources they have no control over.

Yes, like pre 2004 Red Sox. Why do these bad things happen? Because they are the Red Sox.

I don't think Columbus is a terrible team.

But do I think they are an absolute lock for beating Nashville? Hell to the no. At best I'd put their odds at 60%.

They aren't Chicago or a healthy Pittsburgh. I wouldn't put them as a lock to beat any team in the NHL.

No one is saying that. People seemed to be doing the opposite, and some we're saying to not count them out.

I don't think it matters much anyway... Detroit is ahead of them and I'd take them in a win-and-in situation vs Dallas rather than Columbus vs. Nashville all day.

Although I'd love to see Minny lose to Edmonton tonight. Probably a better chance of the Wild dropping 2 than Detroit choking.

And you could have said many similar things about the Canes/Florida matchup in 2008. Sometimes, the best laid plans...

Hall puts Edmonton up 2-0. I dunno, they looking pretty good and Khabibulin has been solid so far.

Khabibulin saves a 2-on-1, then a breakaway, Edmonton goes down the ice and scores.

3-0 Edmonton (on 5 shots). Backstrom has been pulled for Harding.

Sorry to all you Wild fans out there. If it means sacrificing them (instead of Detroit) to get Columbus in, I'm all for it. I really hope Columbus makes it if you couldn't tell.

It's still fine. Minnesota can lose this one and beat Colorado and still make it in.

More importantly, with a win here Edmonton passes the Canes on the Draft board.

6 goals allowed on 13 shots? Some really poor leadership from Koivu, Parise and Suter there.

Yeah, Koivu took a page out of the Staal leadership book and scored a single goal well after the game was out of hand.

He got a point and is therefore immune from criticism.

As long as Colorado wins tomorrow is a win in my books. Either we move to #3 or Columbus makes the playoffs, assuming Tampa wins and we lose.

Wow so Avs win tonight, they could potentially end up picking 4th or 5th if someone outside wins the lottery

That would be brutal after sitting the basement for so much of the season

scenarios:
we're currently at the #6 slot:
Canes regulation loss makes the worst possible slot pre-lottery that we can have #5 (pass Calgary due to SO win).
Win or OT/SO loss would put us in #7 pending the outcome of all other games. Best possible slot with either is #6.

Assuming Canes regulation loss and a Tampa win before the SO, we hold the tiebreak for the #4, any other outcome (any TB loss or SO win) and they have the #4 tiebreak.

A Nashville win of any sort would put us in the #4 hole unless we get any kind of point from our game. A combination of the three games outcomes would move us into the #3 spot.

Avs and Panthers are too far back to be in play sans lottery chaos. Flyers are too far ahead to be in play.

Must lose game tonight.

Tampa will probably cream Florida, so we could end up #4 tonight. I'm fine with that. We would get Barkov or have a chance at one of the big 3.
