They wouldn't have given up that much if he wasn't going to sign there. He signed the same deal he rejected from Pittsburgh.

If you know Staal wants to go to Carolina, then you trade him when you feel you can get the most value for him in return. If Carolina is willing to pony up at the draft to have him for an extra year, then you consider it. They're not a bottom feeder. They're a better team than their record shows, they just had an awful year in terms of injuries. They would have more use for Staal than they would a drafted player who probably won't join the lineup for 2-3 years.

McBain and that 1st rounder isn't going to cut it though. I'd take McBain as a "third piece" but not as a key component. Not really interested in Skinner. Huge deal about to kick in and the concussions seem to have set him back quite a bit. Not enamored with their prospect pool either.

That is a horrible trade for us.

Agreed.

Staal continues to be our most underrated defenseman.

Teams don't trade their best defenseman because of 'depth'. If anyone is going to be the odd man out, it should be Girardi, followed by Del Zotto.

I love that guy and what he brings. My first choice would be to make him a career Ranger. But the team needs to properly assess the situation.
The problem is the OP's entire premise is flawed since we can't sign him to an extension at the draft anyway. This entire hypothetical situation is impossible.

Me too, not down with this deal.

Its a deal a small market rebuilder makes, not a contender.

Plus, why am I not getting this whole 'accommodate the Canes and Staals' and not just seek the best overall deal? IF and when he makes it clear he's not in our future plans, deal with it. So far I'm not buying that's the idea, that he wants to play with his bros.

This is my thoughts as well. Be pre-emptive. If you can get him at 150% of his value now as opposed to 50% then it makes sense IF they get the sense he would sign there.

1st + McBain + something else. Maybe flip that something else in a package to move up a few spots. Overpayment. Blow us away.

I personally think the Rangers can sign him again. I think Marc is actually different than his brothers. Different personality. Team leader here. Gets a ton of ice time. New York city. Big market team with a big market budget. Henrik.

Yeah, as I've said before, the whole "OMGZ Marc Staal to Carolina" scenario is so overblown. Jordan Staal was going to be traded regardless of whether or not Carolina wanted him; it just so happened that they needed a #2 center, and that J. Staal was the best and youngest option available. The Rangers almost traded for Staal themselves (I believe the deal would have centered around Stepan; thank god THAT did not transpire).

Funny thing is, even if Marc's name was Joe Schmoe, Carolina would probably have interest anyway; they could use a defensive staalwart (pun!) on their backend. That being said, yeah, I agree that the Rangers need to loom for the best deal possible, not just go for the whole "all the Staals to Carolina" thing.

What gives you the indication that Jordan was going to be traded regardless? The Pens had made formal offers to him in an attempt to keep him in Pittsburgh.

It seemed to me that Staal wanted out of Crosby/Malkin's shadow more than anything. He wanted to take the next step in his career, that next step being put into a second line role.

Why do you suppose the Rangers and Hurricanes were the only teams interested?

I never said that. Just mentioned that the Rangers had interest in him. I'm sure Calgary, Columbus, Dallas, Toronto and Anaheim among others had some serious interest in him.

This franchise should be doing everything, absolutely everything save a Brad Richards contract, to keep Staal locked up. He is bar none the Rangers' best defensemen. You don't just draft another Marc Staal or pluck one from a prospect pool via trade like it's no big deal.

However, the prospect of him leaving is very real until he puts pen to paper on a new contract. Hopefully, if he is dead set on joining his bros he gives the organization a quiet heads up behind closed doors. And the proposal in the OP is absolutely horrific.

When he turned down the 10 yr / $60M deal (or whatever it was) he basically let them know he was walking. So the Pens were inevitably going to move him.

No, I'm saying that. It seemed to me the only legitimate buzz about Jordan was from Carolina and New York.

I heard some buzz about Toronto going after him, but, yeah, when it came down to it, NY and CAR seemed to be the teams closest to making the deal.

You could say that Jordan wanted to be on a team with Marc...but if that's true, then that debunks the "all the Staals" theory that has been pointed out, because there is no way that the Rangers would be able to get Eric. Besides, the Rangers were probably looking for size at C to begin with.

Maybe it was due in part to the hockey media's obsession with brothers playing on the same team?

Exactly this.

RB's proposal has always been something more along the lines of:

Rangers: Staal
Carolina: 1st, Faulk, another piece

If you're pretty sure you're going to lose Marc anyway, I'd take that deal and run.

I think he mentioned Tlusty as the other piece - I'd be fine with McBain or even a prospect as the other piece. Heck I'd probably do 1st and Faulk alone or 1st, McBain and another piece.

1) - Staal is not a UFA until the summer of 2015.

2) - I am thinking that we cannot offer him an extension until I believe January 2015. I could be mistaken on that. Maybe it's just RFA's that we have to wait on.

No need addressing that now when we still have two full seasons with the player after this season.

Bob McKenzie reported that the Rangers getting in on Jordan pushed Carolina to make the deal. He's not one to sensationalize anything.

I think family was a priority for Jordan. Just like I think it will weigh on Marc's decision.

Staal is better than McD this year. But McD of last year did much better than Staal did at any point in his career. Staal is expandable if the Rangers feel Moore can take the next step. I personally think he can't yet, so I'd hold onto Staal for now.

That deal I do. McBain just isn't enough to make up for losing our best defensmen.

Faulk and their 2013 1st is a deal I'd probably do. It really hurts losing Staal, but Faulk is very promising, right handed, and he is brimming with offensive talent. He's also already a good defensive player.
