If he wanted to go to Carolina, I don't think he'd have any issue at all admitting it to Sather. So yeah, ask the kid.

It would affect negotiations with NYR for an extension, if he was set on going already, and he likely wouldn't m ind going 2 years earlier while they are all in their prime.

Rutherford again said restructuring defense was priority. "We need to be a lot harder to play against. We made it too easy for opponents."

It's his own fault. Too many PMD types, not enough grit and D types. He brought every single one of them in too. When you already have Pitkanen, McBain and a young developing Faulk, you don't need Corvo, Bergeron or Sanguinetti.

It's kind of fascinating that fans think the Islanders are so great this year and the Rangers are so bad, yet they are pretty much equal and the Rangers can still finish ahead of them.

Really hope the islanders end up in 8th and get the pens. My two most hated teams in the playoffs and they hate each other. Would probably beat the crap out of each other as well. Can't see the pens losing that at all.

If the Rangers win tomorrow, they are guaranteed at least 7th and could play Boston.

If they draw Boston and all series start either Tues or Wed, then the series would have to start on Tuesday. I say that because usually playoff games in the NHL are every other day, so the schedule would look something like this:

Game 1 - Tues 4/30 in BOS
Game 2 - Thurs 5/2 in BOS
Game 3 - Sat 5/4 at MSG
Game 4 - Mon 5/6 at MSG
Game 5 - Wed 5/8 in BOS
Game 6 - Fri 5/10 at MSG
Game 7 - Sun 5/12 in BOS

When setting up the schedule on Sunday, they would have to avoid 5/3 because thats a potential Game 6 for the Knicks/Celtic series, and 5/5 at the Garden for a potential game 7 (not happening, but it doesnt matter). Unless there are some set of circumstances we dont know about thats the likely schedule if they finish 7th.

Rangers are the same somewhat.... ok they have Girardi and McDonagh as the defensive dman but the Rangers dont have that nasty physical dman... id love Gleason on NYR.. he would make the defense tougher...

I agree with you, unless the Knicks sweep the Celtics. The Bruins play Sunday night in Boston and the schedule comes out after that. If that's the case we likely will see Games 1 and 2 on Wed 5/1 and Fri 5/3 with the MSG opener on Sunday 5/5. If the Knicks sweep, it's easiest to keep the schedule the same as the NBA one because the buildings are guaranteed to be available.

How awesome would it be to see three 'original six' playoff matchups?

And didn't Rutherford discuss a few years ago that it's not his strategy to regularly draft and develop his own defensemen? I recall him saying something like the Hurricanes like to acquire defensemen who have spent some time with other organizations early on in their careers and then bring them in. McBain and Faulk are recent deviations from that strategy but Pitkanen, Corvo, Sanguinetti, Bergeron, Harrison and Gleason were all drafted by other organizations and played in the NHL/AHL elsewhere before getting to Raleigh.

I can't figure out why he keeps bringing Corvo back, either.

I was just thinking that the other day. Anybody have any clue when the last time all of the Original 6 teams were in the playoffs?

EDIT: Looks like the '96 playoffs, if I'm not mistaken.

Staal, Girardi, McDonagh are all defensive defensemen who can move the puck when needed. They aren't stay-at-homes, but neither are they offensively minded. Stralman and Eminger have become the same way as well. There's not a lot of nastiness back there, but there is a lot of defensive ability and mental toughness. The Canes, on the other hand, have 4 or 5 of their top 6 as players who are more similar to Del Zotto, with Gleason and Harrison being otherwise. It's basically the inverse makeup of a D compared to the Rangers.

There's some sort of Latin DJ concert at the Garden on the 10th.

There aren't a lot of nasty dmen in the league period. The changes in the game have relegated them all to the trash pile and that's why those dmen who can play a vicious game and still keep up with the speed and rule changes are worth their weight in gold. This is why McIlrath was taken above other players.

Let's Go Buffalo! Watching the Pens win a playoff series is at least tolerable in they stomp the Fishies.
