I think Ellis and Watson have a lot more potential than Barrie and sgarbossa, in fact a ton more. Ellis and Watson were both first round picks not long ago and are just starting to break into NHL. Who knows their ceilings.

But it was just a thought, I think it would be insane having drouin and Mack together in NHL.

Then realistically, what would it take from us to get that pick? This is all just hypothetical of course.

I agree than Watson+Ellis > Barrie+Sgarbossa, but I also think Colorado's picks are worth more than ours. I have faith we will bounce back. Colorado...not so much.

I don't think there's any way we can get it without our 2013 1st, Wilson, Forsberg, Josi, Weber, or Rinne.

Barrie is untouchable, similar to the way Josi is guys. He's been excellent this season in a top four role for our club playing alongside defensive stud Greg Zanon.

I don't think you could get our first outright without moving your first this year. For all intensive purposes, this is our last rebuilding draft and our team is on the cusp of gunning for the playoffs once again. New coach, one of the top 3 and maybe a signing or trade to add one more top four defender and we're talented enough to be an 8th seed for sure.

On the Avs board I mentioned #2 for #4 + Watson being intriguing, would this interest any of you as well?

I would do this if Mack is available (i.e. whomever is #1 takes Jones). I don't know if I would do it for Drouin and wouldn't do it for Jones.

Watson is going to be good in a certain role, but we seem to find guys like him by the bushel.

I'd pay Watson for the difference between a guy like Barkov/Lindholm to a guy like Mack.

In, extensive, I haven't slept since Wens and am sitting in class so give me a break.

Keep in mind I'm in a minority on that idea of a trade, just looking to gauge it myself. I like Watson a lot and see a good top 6 RW guy in the future, a position we're quite thin on.

I agree that the thought of landing both Drouin and McK is worth exploring no matter how long the odds. It would be a bold, bold franchise move and PR bonanza a la the Sedin move.

Would you give up Wilson, Watson, Blum and Ellis? Wilson, FF, Blum and Ellis? It would have to be a lot for sure to get the attention of Florida. I'm not sure you can get the Avs attention.

Wilson is the only one that even gives me pause, but the sheer volume of assets would make me nervous.

My point is that it would take a significant payment to get the #1 or #2 pick out of the hands of Florida/Colorado. Do you think that it wouldn't take that much or you just wouldn't consider parting with the necessary assets?

I bet Watson, Ellis and FF would get us the second overall. Maybe with some minor tweaking. I would rather try to hang onto Wilson if at all possible.
Would suck to lose FF right away though.

Just the thought of having drouin and Mack makes me drool

I wouldn't give up that much for one prospect. That would set us back too much.

Yep. Understand, as that would scrape the cupboard pretty clean.

It's just intriguing enough to think of snagging both McK and Drouin that you would hope Poile would investigate it.

Sigh.

Guys, folks have to go through changes in their reflexes and instincts to successfully transition from juniors to the NHL. That's part of what developing a player is about. As a result of that process, their style can change significantly enough that prior awesome linemates can very easily end up having no chemistry anymore. Even moreso, really, because they might revert back to bad old habits as part of same and try to play a juniors-level game in the NHL.

Considering the prices also thusly associated, it is a fools' errand and I highly recommend against it.

Yes, they did...and then they traded him to Los Angeles.

Coming from a fan who's part of a fanbase that's been there... those sorts of messianic dreams will destroy your sanity.

Don't lean on them. Games are won by teams, not The New Hotness.

Edmonton's win over MIN guarantees that they cannot finish lower than us.

That's one more draft spot locked up

I understand your point, but I would stop short of comparing the Blue Jackets to the Predators, especially in such a pedantic manner.

The Predators already have a good team. What it has lacked is the "new hotness" to get it over the hump. Forsberg is a nice chunk of hotness to come, and whomever they grab in the top 4 is going to add even more. They're setting up for a Philadelphia style mini-rebuild, rather than an extended LA style rebuild.

With that said, some of our posters are going a little overboard with excitement, as you see in these "empty the cupboard" posts.

We'll have one first round pick, likely number 3 or 4, and we'll take it.

I'm not saying that the draft pick is folly. Just that one shouldn't assume that one player is the cure to all one's woes, and that selling the farm for another high draft pick is the height of foolishness. That's all.

Well.... Blum and Ellis aren't exactly the farm. Upside looks to be 2nd pairing and PP specialist. Wilson, I'll grant you, may be excessive but the jury is out. If you could trade two of those 3 (or even all 3) for the number one pick, it may turn out to be a bad move but probably not the height of foolishness.
