I think the worst thing he did this offseason is not pay Brandon Prust or at least replace him. The Nash trade was great but we lost some depth, grit, and good PKers. His deadline deals were great and our team has gone 9-3-1 since then. We took a hit this season but we'll be better in the long run. One of our biggest issues has been not having a cheap, young, homegrown 1C and it looks like Stepan is developing into one, great pick by them in the 2nd round of the 08 draft. He hasn't been that bad in recent years but I suspect that is because Jeff Gorton is mostly running the show.

Anyone who gets to stay on the job for as long as Sather have is going to stumble upon a good team eventually. Especially with limitless cash to spend. It's like monkeys pounding on typewriters. Give them enough time and you'll get the works of Shakespeare. He should of course have been fired a long time ago.

This is absolutely wrong. Have you ever heard of Don Waddell and Doug MacLean? Sather might not be the best in the business but he's definitely not the worst.

Also, on the other hand, being 70 isn't much of an excuse seeing as Bryan Murray is the same age if not older and he's still clearly one of the absolute sharpest minds around in the game who is always evolving and trying to be ahead of the curve in terms of trends and team-building.

Yeah he does. He's been GM for over a decade and hasn't been as successful with New York as he was with Edmonton.

Wow

I swear the rangers were earmarked to win the cup this year by most of you.

He's a good GM. The Oilers would love to have him back over Lowe/MacTavish.

This right here is easily the biggest mistake Sather's made since maybe 2008 - not bringing Prust back. Yeah, Prust is overpaid, but the effect that not having him took on our team was nearly catastrophic.

Post Lockout 1, he's done an excellent job of getting the right management and scouting team in place. This is the best the organization has looked in terms of putting players through the pipeline in a very long time. He has also mastered the art of signing FAs in the cap era. Gomez yielded McDonagh and Gaborik produced nearly a ppg and then got Brassard and Moore who have been impressive so far in NY. He's also an active trader and that's better than some other teams who sit still and yet end up worse off in terms of cap space.

He's no supergenius but he's done a good job now for the past number of years.

Just to put things in perspective, if DL had failed get the Kings into the playoffs last year (which nearly happened) the writing was on the wall and AEG might have let him go.

I would really like to see Sather lose his job if the Rangers don't go deep into the playoffs. Sadly, he'll never be gone until he decides to step down.

Jerry Mathers & Dan Rather would be an upgrade.

At least he turned Gomez into a top-pair defenseman. What if the Habs had Ryan McDonagh patrolling their blueline?

I agree with others---Sather's signings are often questionnable, but he's great at trades.

Yeah, he was able to get that return, but it's not like he had this whole thing planned. He got lucky.

Sather won because of Gretzky not because he was a good GM, shoulda been fired years ago.

That is all.

Sather is just another in a long line of people who rode Gretz and Mess' coattails to glory, and he's still cashing cheques written 20 and 30 years ago.

NO worries though, if NYR ever fires him he has a spot in EDM for sure.

Rangers fans are too busy hating Tortorella right now to worry about Sather.

huh? last I checked, winning brings people in. Or in the Rangers case, given the market, they'll sell out every game no matter what. The owners want a winner. Winners are more profitable. To believe his bosses pay no attention to the standings is ridiculous.

Dolan really doesn't seem to care about what the Rangers do or how far they finish. It's like he just wants to see at least one round of the playoffs and everything after that is just gravy.

That's where you're wrong. Dolan pays attention to the Knicks, I'd be surprised if he could name you a player on the Rangers. That's not a joke.

All things considered we've made the playoffs 6 out of 7 years.

Sather's been getting awfully lucky in trades since the early 80s.

After spending the first 2/3s of his managerial career operating on a shoe string budget he has, admittedly, gone a little crazy throwing around Dolan's money in free agency.

I would take him back as the Oilers' GM in a heartbeat though.

got Powe for Rupp

I think he doesn't worry about terrible FA signings because he always seems to turn them around.
I'm sure Dolan is extremely impressed with Sather's ability to buy out players.

If you knew how much influence Sather had on the development of that team you'd probably change your mind.

Messier for example was not some sure fire hot shot prospect when he got to Edmonton. He was a 3rd rounder.

I think he started off in NYR operating completely in the wrong direction but has really turned it around more recently.
