The #Caps have re-signed Michal Neuvirth to a two-year, $5 million contract.

Ugh.

Seriously? They're paying the backup $2.5M?

They better have a trade lined up in the off-season.

I'd rather have an experienced veteran as our backup.

I'd rather have Dany Sabourin at the league minimum. If this season's any indication, going forward Holtby will be a 60+ game starter.

Will be hard to keep Ribs now I think.. haven't played the numbers but Schultz and Wardo pretty much has to be bought out now, right?

This is one of the problems I see with GMGM. He seems to become enamored with players most recent performance and only focuses on that when it comes to their contracts. I give you:
  • Exhibit A Joel Ward and his PO performance with the Predators
  • Exhibit B Jeff Schultz and his plus 50 season

    and now this

Schultz, Neuvirth, Chimera, and Ward for $10+ million. Instead of say, Ribeiro and Scuderi. Idiot franchise. ****ing idiots.

Neuvirth hasn't been performing at all. Barely played. GMGM should have been concentrating on Alzner and Ribeiro.

I like Neuvy, but I will say I am surprised by this signing. He has played well the last couple starts, but Holtby looks to be #1 now and Grubs in Hershey looks like the future as well. Maybe there is more to this. Maybe GMGM got enough sniffs around Neuvy from other GM's prior to the deadline that he wanted to lock him up with the thought Neuvy would be popular in the offseason?

I was referring to his appearance the other night. He played well in that game.

Isn't that supposed to be taboo or something, not trading players you've just extended?

Something has to be up heading into the offseason. You don't lock up the backup goalie for more money then you are paying the starter unless the GM is a complete idiot. And regardless of what most think of GMGM on here, complete idiot is not one of them. Complete idiot GM is Milbury territory.

Just when I started to like you McPhee you go out and do something totally stupid like this. Really hope he plans to pull a decent trade in the offseason.

There can be no other explanation. Would be nice to know the reasoning behind this decision. To bad there are no Caps beat writers worth a **** who can dig up that information.

Because Mcphee is known for making moves to address cap and roster issues.

How do you explain trading Varley to the Avs? Seemed like a roster and cap situation to me.

The goaltender market is going to be flooded this summer. It's such a horrible decision. Even if you think you can trade him there was no need to lock him up now should that assumption turn out to be wrong. Even if he was playing the KHL card there was no reason to cave.

Varly wanted out - it was either trade him or he was KHL bound.

The really frustrating thing is we will only have the vague words of GMGM in a press conference like setting to explain things for the foreseeable future. The bloggers and practice stalkers covering this team have no shot at digging out the real story about this.

You got me. He has made a move to address a roster issue once. And I guess the Fedorov acquisition makes two. Maybe you're right. Maybe he's due.

But I think I'm right. The current roster is the team next year substituting Laich for Ribeiro.

Off-season sure will be interesting. George must think he's trading Neuvy; I don't see any other explanation. Either that, or Ribs is as good as gone.
