This thread is off topic, so I'll point out there are something like 39 days to the start of training camps.

Go, Esks. I have high hopes for this season.

New signing in the defensive backfield. I know that these guys are usually camp fodder and many barely make it through the first week, but this guy comes highly regarded by the scouts and management. This is a candidate to be the surprise of training camp. We'll see if he pans out.

why is the media making a big deal about the "secret" camp in Florida last week?

doesn't this always occur?

It does sound like a Rugby team, similar to the All Blacks. Are they going to finally play a game, this started in 2008 and were to start in 2012 now pushed back to 2014. Man they take their time.

Any coherent plan coming from Ottawa takes time if it ever occurs. Pretty much as a rule. Must be something in the air..

I was referring to the talk about nicknames in other sports, but as I review the posts I agree it was only a couple of slightly off-topic comments. Carry on.

There was no secret camp. The tweets were wrong. It was a try-out session, nothing more. We've been doing them for years. The series Hail Mary was about those tryouts.

Apparently they wanted to keep the name starting with the letter R as a reference to the Roughriders of old. But RedBlacks?

Raiders? Regiment? Rustlers? Ruffians? Royals? And they came up with Redblacks?

Some concepts for the Ottawa Red Blacks' logo and colour schemes. (Surprise! Red and black!)

Its amazing that this isn't some kind of parody.

The 'Red Blacks' is the best they could come up with and the CFL approved it...good lord.

I mean the Tiger Cats have 2 nouns in their moniker...just borrow one.

Maybe thats part of the charm of this league...its a joke and everyone knows it whether they want to admit it or not. As a matter of fact there is comfort in the ridiculous elements of the League. Its just always been a bit of a joke and its okay.

Sort of like an episode of the original Star Trek series...the special effects are hokey as hell and the acting is laughable but there is a certain charm in the product as a whole.

As yes...nothing like the good ole CFL.

Not the best name, but they want to be unique. The only helmet logo I like, is the last one.

There are a few more logo designs at the bottom of the link MV provided.

There is an obvious Lumber Jack theme happening which seems reasonable although I am not sure how this name links to the Wood cutting industry of old.
Some of the Logos are fine but the name is just so damn odd.

What do you call the team for short...the Blacks?

First thing I thought when I saw that middle logo. Just call the team the Lumberjacks, it sounds similar and isn't completely stupid. The Redblacks? Doesn't even roll off the tongue well. It's surprising enough that one person thinks it's a good nickname, but incredible that they convinced a bunch of other people as well.

Had breakfast with Kavis this morning. Love this quality guy. He has growing to do as a coach but he has tonnes of potential. I'm very hopeful for this season. Our QBs show lots of promise but are unproven. Our season rests on their success. The rest of the team is strong. Some concerns on the offensive line but I think it will be much improved.

Q

Why not just call them the lumberjacks and be done with it.

"I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK..."

Kavis Reed is an awesome individual. So is Ralph Krueger.

But what does that really mean as far as their coaching acumen? Actually of the two Ralphie is much more in control.

After last season I have limited faith in Kavis Reed. Its show me or gtfo time. This team was outcoached in nearly every game and a veritable gong show on the sidelines. How soon we forget.

Are you like friends with him or do you work for the esks or something?
(if you don't mind me asking)

I'm very pumped for this next CFL (and NFL) season esks have done alot of stuff, we'll see if they are actually a much improved maybe even contending team

other than showing us moneyguy is in tight with the eskies, what does his post mean, exactly?
what's it supposed to tell us?

I agree with you.
at this point I'm sick of hearing what a great guy Kavis is, etc, etc.

if the esks are 3-6 halfway through the year, it won't make me feel better knowing that Mr. Reed is a fine fellow with lots of potential.
Reed better get his head out of his butt in the sidelines this year. the esks were a woefully unprepared team and looked liked clowns more often than not.
he may be a quality guy off the field, but the esks were a joke last year and it wasn't all tillmans fault.

Wonder if Tebow is coming to the CFL since he was released by the Jets.

I don't know that he's football smart enough to do it, nor does he throw the ball well enough. He'll keep getting bit jobs in the NFL because he's "Teebosus", but he's basically done, thankfully.

I don't see it. Lots of people suggesting he'd have to be a backup, why would he come to the CFL to be a backup?

I'd love to see Tebow come to the CFL and fail. That would be pretty entertaining.
