As far as value for the player goes in a vacuum it's not bad (it's cheap for a guy who could be a starter; compare it to, say Pavelec, and laugh)... but for this team? In the role he's going to have here? Too much to spend on a backup.

Not likely, but gmgm is blinded to not push for the move.

Phoenix would make sense for Neuvirth for $$$ reasons, assuming Smith moves on. They do like their Czechs. Still, little need to do this now.

Depending on term, I think 4.5 is very likely.

Honestly, nothing is more disappointing than George *continuing* to give me mucho ammo for....

Fire George!

This is nutso. Take out the actual numbers of this deal, and what it means to next years squad (goodbye Ribeiro and/or any other major off-season add) as Caps now have a cool 14.5m tied up (thats 22.5% of the cap) tied up in 3 bottom 6 forwards, an 8th dman, and a back up goalie. Thats just , any way you slice it.

But what is really moronic, I mean true idiocy...is the confidence hammer it gives to Holtby. On the eve of an amazingly important playoff run, you force arguably the most important "mental" player (the goalie) to have to play a bunch of mental games. I mean, wow.

Sure, Holtby may have the mental fortitude to not care, and to shrug it off. But why force him too? Why why why put him in that position?

Good point on what it does for Holtby, I hadn't looked at it that way.

Terrible. Kiss goodbye to Ribeiro. Too much wasted $ elsewhere. F'ing $2.5m/year for a mediocre 20 games/year backup goalie? Unreal.

This is a pre-trade deal, I bet. In the offseason (at the draft?) Neuvy's gone. Much more valuable trade asset on a reasonable deal than as an RFA. I will reserve judgement on this for now.

Swing and a miss by George

Not totally unexpected for a guy who's been batting below the Mendoza line for the past decade though.

I don't buy the Holtby thing, honestly. He's plenty confident and is clearly the starter, and he'll get a big-time payday in a year or two if he keeps playing like this.

I refuse to believe this deal was done without knowledge from all parties that Neuvy will be traded this offseason. George HAD to have gone to Neuvy and said let's get this done so we can find you a home to be #1 this summer on a reasonable cap hit, and then he told Holts that they're signing Neuvy to trade him and that he's our franchise netminder going forward. This is the only scenario I envision that isn't completely absurd.

McPhee thinks he's ahead of the curve with these deals yet he didnt have the foresight to move Semin. I can't let that one go.

Win something or go away.

As I said, maybe it wont matter. But thats not the point.

Why even make it an issue? If this was the agreed upon deal, do it in a month when the Caps are playing golf. There is no earthly reason to do it now. Only bad things can happen from it.

I doubt this affects Holtby. It'd be one thing if it was legit starter money on a long term but its not. Neuvy is just an expensive back up. Which is baffling in and of itself.

Horribad. So what teams could be looking for a guy like Nervy?
Phoenix, Jersey, Philly,...?

It's Holtby's first RFA deal vs Neuvirth's second. Don't see any issues there in terms of undermining Holtby. Does give us an idea of what Holtby's likely to command next contract though.
