Better game than yesterday with some good things in the offensive zone, but a win thrown away by two missed penalty shots and two typical Philippe Furrer plays.

Now let's wait for the final cuts.

Didn't see the 1st period.

Swiss absolutely dominated 2nd period, I don't even know if the Germans went passed the red line that period. Should have won the game.

I do not know how Ambuhl is not in the NHL. Maybe it's because he was in the wrong club at the wrong time but he's an elite player.

Suri is impressive, he's surely going to the Worlds.

As the Wings lead to Dallas and the Blue Jackets are loosing to the Preds the roster is probably complete:

Torhüter (3): Berra Reto (EHC Biel), Gerber Martin (Rögle BK / SWE), Stephan Tobias (Genève-Servette HC)

Verteidiger (8): Blindenbacher Severin (ZSC Lions), Blum Eric (Kloten Flyers), Furrer Philippe (SC Bern), Grossmann Robin (HC Davos), Josi Roman (Nashville Predators/NHL), Seger Mathias (ZSC Lions), Vauclair Julien (HC Lugano), Von Gunten Patrick (Kloten Flyers)

Stürmer (14): Ambühl Andres (ZSC Lions), Bieber Matthias (Kloten Flyers), Bodenmann Simon (Kloten Flyers), Bürgler Dario (HC Davos), Cunti Luca (ZSC Lions), Gardner Ryan (SC Bern), Hollenstein Denis (Kloten Flyers), Monnet Thibaut (ZSC Lions), Moser Simon (SCL Tigers), Niederreiter Nino (Bridgeport/AHL), Plüss Martin (SC Bern), Suri Reto (EV Zug), Trachsler Morris (ZSC Lions), Walker Julian (Genève-Servette HC)

Surprise is that Rüthemann has been cut, I didn't expect that. No surpise on D, Stancescu is also just not good enough. 7 players will play their first IHWC, this is quite a high number. In goal I guess we'll see Berra as #1 and Gerber as #2.

I'm starting to wonder if it's just not meant to be a good year, with injuries to Wick, Romy and Bärtschi comming out of nowhere, and the Wings finally managing a winning streak at the worst possible moment. I was already very pessimistic before the 2002, 2006 and 2010 tournaments, twice I was right, once I was wrong. Hopefully 2013 will tie the count.

Regarding the cuts, I didn't know if Simpson wanted to go with 8 or 9 defensemen, but I think he made the right choice. Now let's see if all 8 will play, or if one will be scratched. I would go for the 2nd option and use Gardner as a 13th forward and power play specialist.

I'm happy with the two defensemen cut, I was afraid Simpson would keep Helbling as Bezina is out of the team, and cut one of Blum or Von Gunten, but in my opinion the final choice is the correct one.

Stancescu out is fine too, even though considering that Simpson always had two defensive lines, I expected an offensive player to be cut instead. On the other hand, I can't understand not taking Rüthemann. He's a proven performer at this level, always managed to get his points, and also useful if he doesn't score. Last season, despite having a substandard club season and playing out of the top six of a team which lacked offensive depth, he still got the job done pretty well, so why cut him now that he played a better season? I'd still trust him to perform more than all those unproven forwards. I realise he played poorly yesterday, but if he was one of the borderline players, why not give him two games to prove himself?

And if the plan was to go with Bodenmann, Suri and Bürgler in offensive roles all along, why not give a chance to player with higher potential such as Martschini or Vermin, or to a proven veteran who can still perform well such as Jeannin?

Anyway, there is a reason why Simpson is the one behind the bench and I'm the one complaining behind my keyboard, so let's try to be optimistic!

I'm skeptical too. It only proves we don't have a good depth on contrary that some people are thinking. At least regarding the offense...

Am I the only one thinking Andrighetto could have his spot in this selection? Especially when we know lots of players are missing.

What do you guys think about Neiderreiter's shot at making the Olympic squad? Should be a lock, no? Especially if he is able to crack the Isles' roster next year.

If he's healthy and doesn't have a massive slump next year he should be a lock, yes.

I really don't have a good feeling about this. There are way too many question marks at this time and (at least to me) there is no visible concept in the selection and the lines.
The defense may be alright, but I seriously doubt that this offense is able to score more than 1-2 goals per game on this level.
And that's definitely not enough to bring us to the QFs.

Who are the two goalies this year and is there a clear number 1 goalie or will they rotate to start the tourney?

Gerber starts game 1, but I doubt that he will be the #1 over the entire tournament.

2014 Swiss Olympia Roster

I'm really surprised : no post about the 48 men swiss olympic roster ? We don't find in it Bykov(Strange !) and the (too )young Andrighetto,Richard, Vermin,Hoffmann.

It's not much more than a photo date, doesn't say much. Has nothing to do with the rosters all the other nations are publishing.

But all those players you name only have a chance if there are many injuries, Bykov is probably center #5 or #6 on the depth chart.

There are many notable names missing, like Genoni, Manzato, Helbling and Hirschi who all already played a world championship under Simpson and are regular call ups, as well as some guys like Peter or Rüfenacht who played in the exhibitions prior to the world championship last season.

Anyway, no big deal, it's not like it's a training camp and they are going to play some games.

Lukas Meili, Reto Schäppi and Samuel Walser get their first call-up.

Out of this roster probably only 3 players have a real chance of making the sotchi-squad, Du Bois, Wick and Romy.
Very keen to see Kukan again, I'm quite high on him.

Torhüter (2): Lukas Flüeler (ZSC Lions), Lukas Meili (EHC Biel)

Verteidiger (8): Alessandro Chiesa (EV Zug), Félicien du Bois (Kloten Flyers), Patrick Geering (ZSC Lions), Samuel Guerra (HC Davos), Dean Kukan (Lulea, SWE), Romain Loeffel (HC Fribourg-Gottéron), Tim Ramholt (EV Zug), Dominik Schlumpf (HC Lugano)

Stürmer (15): Etienne Froidevaux (Lausanne HC), Gregory Hofmann (HC Davos), Michael Liniger (Kloten Flyers), Inti Pestoni (HC Ambri-Piotta), Benjamin Plüss (HC Fribourg-Gottéron), Kevin Romy (Genève-Servette HC), Reto Schäppi (ZSC Lions), Tristan Scherwey (SC Bern), Juraj Simek (Genève-Servette HC), Julien Sprunger (HC Fribourg-Gottéron), Victor Stancescu (Kloten Flyers), Joël Vermin (SC Bern), Samuel Walser (HC Davos), Roman Wick (ZSC Lions), Dino Wieser (HC Davos)

Interesting that most players probably won't go to Sochi. I was wondering if Simpson would concentrate on the Olympics given that there are only 7 games before the tournament (including two over there, so actually just five games to test players), but it looks like he's already testing players for the next WC. Could it mean that he's made his mind for most of the Olympic team already?

Just curious guys, what do you think are the chances of Berra getting a shot to crack the Sochi team? He played really well in the world championship. I'd really like to see him make it, but not sure how likely it is.

Hiller and Berra should be locks for Sochi.

And question for Swiss members, regarding very good start in AHL, what do you think could Andrighetto make a team ?

Berra is pretty much a lock.

Andrighetto would need to be called up and dominate, there is enough depth to make it very difficult for a player without international experience to crack the roster. I expect Bärtschi to be the only newcomer.

I definately agree with you here. I love Andrighetto from what I was able to see so far. But we have other more experienced players with a better size.
Bärtschi will probably make the team, but he also needs to step it up, there are guys in the Swiss league not far behind him.

Gotta love Andrighetto's core strength though. Incredibly strong on the puck for his size, something that I don't see in many swiss players.

If he doesn't make it, it will be due to his lack of international experience. I expect him to be a core part of our national team in the future (if he's available).

There's the team for the Arosa challenge:

Benjamin Conz (HC Fribourg-Gottéron)
Martin Gerber (Kloten Flyers)

Goran Bezina (Genève-Servette HC)
Severin Blindenbacher (ZSC Lions)
Eric Blum (Kloten Flyers)
Robin Grossmann (HC Davos)
Steve Hirschi (HC Lugano)
Mathias Seger (ZSC Lions)
Julien Vauclair (HC Lugano)
Patrick von Gunten (Kloten Flyers)

Andres Ambühl (HC Davos)
Matthias Bieber (Kloten Flyers)
Dario Bürgler (HC Davos)
Luca Cunti (ZSC Lions)
Ryan Gardner (SC Bern)
Denis Hollenstein (Genève-Servette HC)
Thibaut Monnet (HC Fribourg-Gottéron)
Martin Plüss (SC Bern)
Victor Stancescu (Kloten Flyers)
Reto Suri (EV Zug)
Morris Trachsler (ZSC Lions)
Julian Walker (HC Lugano)

Looks a lot like the world championship team, with Conz, Bezina, Hirschi and Stancescu replacing Stephan, Josi, Diaz, Furrer, Moser, Niederreiter and Bodenmann. None of the Deutschland cup players get a call. I wonder if we can expect a similar lineup.
