Who is your Red Wings "rookie" of the year?

There's actually a lot of competition this year which is awesome. I was very inclusive with the term rookie, ie I included Damien Brunner who is not eligible for the Calder. I also included Danny DeKeyser who only played 11 games. So with that being said who is your pick for DRW Rookie of the Year for 2013?

I went with Joker. Here's why:
  1. He carried that third line. We had no scoring to speak of from our bottom 6 until Andersson was brought up. He clicked with both Tatar and Nyquist. There were times when our scoring lines were dead silent and that scoring from his line was very valuable.
  2. He plays huge PK mins. This was a very big benefit with Helm going down.
  3. This season bodes well for his future. He was compared to Sammy Pahlsson when he was drafted. His points per 60 mins was right where Nyquist's is this year. So I think there's more scoring potential from #63.

Yeah, I probably shouldn't have included DeKeyser but decided to be inclusive. If I used NHL methodology I wouldn't have been able to include Brunner.

I voted for DeKeyser, so good add! Kid comes right out of college and holds down a spot in the lineup during midseason crucial games. I think he's been awesome.

Yup. The kid is solid as a rock. Did not expect someone to be this good straight out of college.

Yes, he should be as I don't think playoff games count so he will still be eligible.

I think DeKyser will be a rookie again year. Or least qualify because he played to few games this year.

Voted Brunner, he had a great first half of the season.

If either Nyquist or Tatar had stayed for the entire season they would've probably taken it.

I voted for DD. The guy is ready to go as is and is only going to get better. He elevated all of the defensive pairings' play IMO.

Brunner showed us that he can score early on but lost his touch halfway through the season. I felt that his 200ft game got better as the season progressed even though his production went down.

If only Babcock would take him of the point and put him down low on the PP

Tatar IMO was the best forward behind Brunner. He competed hard in every game he was in and showed us some good hands around the net. He is not afraid to pay the price when he goes to the net.

Anderson was a nice surprise. I think that he will be a bottom six guy on the team for years to come.

Nyquist looked good down the stretch but he was terrible in the early part of the season. Which Nyquist will show up next year. He has the skills and passes the eyeball test but only time will tell if he can get to be a legitimate scorer.

Smith looked pretty good down the stretch but he was pretty mediocre for most of the season. He is now better than he was but I was hoping for more. I think he spent too much time the last few years learning from Nick Kronwall playing defense instead of Nick Lidstrom. Babcock should have been more specific.

Lashoff, for coming out of nowhere I am glad to have him for depth. He is better than Cola in his own zone and is a decent pk guy but I would prefer the other guys in the game over him.

Mursak? Enjoy the AHL.

I agree that we do not make the playoffs without DD. However, Brunner's scoring the first few weeks won a few games. The points then are just as important as the ones in April.

DD for me, Brunner is actually very disappointing. What has he done since that hot streak early on? He doesn't produce after 30+ games in a tight schedule, he doesn't produce on a third line either. He sucks on the point on the pp, what exactly is he good at?

the hot streak does count as part of the season though.
i don't really see how brunner could be described as disappointing. with his points fleshed out to an 82-game season, we'd have been looking at sth in the region of 82 20 25, which is pretty decent in a rookie year. 5th top point scorer on the team (and 9 ahead of 6th), i'd say his contribution has been important.

that being said, he has to work on several aspects of his game and he especially annoys me when he attempts an impossible shot, as he does at least once or twice/match.

for me, dekeyser looks like he might be the most promising, but he played too few matches to be rookie of the year, so i'd go with brunner. also, although smith has been disappointing to an extent, that has been offset by the rise of kindl who started to show why he was rated so highly. smith will improve next year as well.

Yeah I technically shouldn't have included him and probably not Brunner. I just think it's a good sign we're getting solid contributions from our young players. DD could be a decent Calder candidate next season.

So some people are basing their votes against Brunner because of his relatively poor end to the season when DeKeyser only played 11 games?

Brunner had 5 goals and 8 points in his first 11 games and continued that pace for another 10-12 games or so. He also played in Switzerland before that so it's understandable that the hectic schedule might've gotten to him.

I see a lot of potential with Brunner. No, he shouldn't play on the point and he'll need to work on certain areas of the game, but this was his first season in the NHL, give him some credit.

Brunner
DeKeyser
Nyquist
Andersson
Tatar
Smith
Lashoff

In that order.

Before people begin to flip out, Tatar is only low because of the amount of games he played in. Andersson was quietly realgud most of the season.

It has to be Brunner this year, but watch for the rise of DD next season.
