Did Kaberle really save the Flyers?

Heard Flyers were going to trade Carter to TOR for Kaberle and a 1st round pick, but Kaberle refused to waive. True?

By my recollection, it was Carter + 1st round pick for Kaberle.

Thank God that didn't happen.

Depends what year the first was. 2010 or 2011?

For some reason the Flyers have been interested in him several times. The Flyers did talk to the Leafs about trading Carter for Kaberle in 2008 though I don't remember anything about a first round pick being involved and not sure how close the deal ever came to actually being made. The Flyers also were in serious discussions to trade Lindros to the Leafs in 2001, and that was fairly close to happening but when the Flyers insisted on Kaberle being part of the deal it fell apart.

Pretty sure the reports were that it was Carter+ a 1st for Kaberle but he wouldn't waive. Who knows if that is true though.

Those were the rumors, but Holmgren denied it. Who knows if it was true.

Let's just say the return we got from him was way better.

I'm sure there are tons of these trades that never happen. Kaberle was a damn good defenseman back in the day.

I remember the flyers wanting antropov and kaberle from the tml. ON paper the flyers got a huge package from nyr but that did not work out obviously. Kim johnsson was awesome though.

Holmgren was always adamant that Carter was on the table. I think he was offering Umberger at the time, and TOR GM was asking Carter

We got lucky that Johnsson actually turned out for us in that Lindros trade. Brendl was actually the centerpiece, and he flaked out.

Could be a butterfly effect type of deal. This team would be drastically different if Carter was dealt for Kaberle. Maybe drastically worse. Maybe drastically better. My guess is that Richards would still be here. Bryz probably wouldn't be here. Bob may not have been here. Read may not be here. Obviously Voracek and Couturier wouldn't be here. Really too tough to say whether or not it was a good thing because who knows what would have happened in that alternate universe.

Yeah, I remember how psyched I was for Brendl. He was supposed to be a can't miss prospect. Dominated the WHL and was a top five pick like a year or two before they got him. I called in to WIP a month or so ago when they were talking about players that busted in trades and I mentioned Brendl and I think it was Rob Ellis who basically laughed at me and said no one expected much out of him when they got him in the Lindross deal.

Calling WIP to talk about hockey is like calling your wife's dad for sex tips. Doesn't work.

Lol. Nice. It was one of those things where if you come up with the best bust you on tickets to something. I figured throwing Pavel Brendl's name out there would put me in the running because it was a pretty big bust that no one really remembers. Instead I got laughed out of the place.

I would say Brendl's widely known as a pretty good bust in hockey not just Flyers. I usually see his name on lists for busts. He might not be the highest on the list but his name is usually on one.

I was young at the time but I remember people being some what excited about Brendl because of his eye popping Junior stats. At least we were able to scrap Kim Johnsson from that Lindros trade. Depending on how much you liked fights you could throw Brashear in there too since we traded Jan Hlavac for him.

Yeah it was all Philly sports (and it was just trades, not draft picks).
