Spring 2013 Prospect Rankings: #1

Shall we?

Prospects are listed according to HF prospect with some minor adjustments (Foligno is 4 games short of graduating but I know how much people get irritated when they see someone that close on the rankings). If I've left someone off, please let me know. The first 10 choices are form Bakes' rankings 1-11 (Foligno at #5 omitted). Make your case, suggest the next add, we'll got 25 or so. Open for 24 hours. Allons-y.

Forwards
Brian Flynn, Christian Isackson, Colin Jacobs, Justin Kea, Jacob Lagace, Brad Navin, Logan Nelson, Jonathan Parker, Judd Peterson, Riley Boychu, Tim Schaller, Kevin Sundher, Shawn Szydlowski, Phil Varone

Defensemen
Mark Adams, Brady Austin, Nick Crawford, Jerome Gauthier-Leduc, Alex Lepkowski, Matt MacKenzie, Chad Ruhwedel, Drew Schiestel

Goaltenders
Connor Knapp, Nathan Lieuwen, Andrey Makarov, Linus Ullmark

Armia add Flynn. Shouldn't Ruhwedel be in the add in section?

Grigs with a few more seasons under his belt will be a stud, same goes for Armia.

I go with the Center.

I'd say Grigs but Armia is not far behind.

Armia. I think he's closer to being a real impact player than Grigs. Both have remarkable potential, Armia is just ahead of Grigs in his development (as one would expect from a guy one year older).

Add Flynn.

Armia. I think he will be a 1st line winger. I think there's a lot more questions marks when it comes to Grigs.

Add Flynn if Ruhwedel not eligible, else add Ruhwedel.

Armia - his hustle and somewhat new-found desire to be a sound defensive player puts him on top for me.

Add Flynn.

Armia for me. Going to be a two-man race between him and Grigs.

Add Makarov.

Yup, knew I had forgotten someone.

For me it's Armia with the top gig. Add Flynn.

Grigs just barely over Armia whereas last poll Grigs was ahead by a margin

Grigorenko. I think it's important to remember here that Armia had at least as many warts to his game as an 18-year-old. Armia's had time to iron some of those out so his projection may look a little safer at this point than Grigorenko's, but I still believe Grigs has the higher upside.

I'll take the guy who has answered those questions, even if he is further along in his development. Armia was also allowed to develop his game, whereas Grigs has not been put into a position to succeed.

It's the age old question. How do you balance potential with likelyhood of reaching it and how close to NHL-ready a player is? Everyone has their own opinion on that, which is what makes ranking so difficult.

Pretty much.

I like Grigs upside slightly more, but Armia has really impressed me lately. He's developing a two-way game, and his shot is elite.

It's a toss up, but Armia is my favorite prospect, so Ill go with him.

If Grigorenko hadn't gotten NHL time, and shown almost nothing during that time... he'd be #1. But seeing him get a taste, and seeing how far away he is... definitely bumps him to #2 (whether that's fair or not, I don't care).

The good news here is that Armia has taken steps to improve the areas of his game that needed improvement. Of course the bad news is seeing just how far away Grigorenko seems to be.

Figure whoever wins this is only a momentary warmer of the #1 chair as the Sabres upcoming top pick will be the newest, brightest bundle of promise.
