The Vanek Thread

Buffalo looks like they'll be going into rebuild mode next season.

Pominville got traded at the deadline and Miller looks to be on the way out this summer.

Vanek is one of the top offensive wingers in the game, has a cap hit of 7.125, is a UFA after next season and made comments at the end of the season that he wouldn't want to stick around for an extended rebuild. Buffalo has the ability to retain some of his cap hit (or take on a bad contract) due to how much capspace they have and their owners willingness to spend.

What is his trade value and likely teams he'd go to this off-season?

Vanek wants out of Buffalo? Flyers interested

Quote:
Last month, a source close to the situation told TFP that Vanek would not sign an extension with the Sabres and is likely to walk as a free agent following the 2013-14 season.

Understanding the team's current state, and that Miller is expected to be dealt this off-season, Vanek is open to the idea of being traded this summer if the opportunity presented itself.

"Let's be honest. I'm not stupid. I know I have a year left and they can probably deal me for prospects, young guys, whatever else is out there," Vanek told the Buffalo News this weekend. "Yeah, I've thought about it. If it looks like it's a long rebuild, then it probably makes sense for both parties to move on."

Wow that's pretty blunt.

Every team will call, so saying flyers are interested isn't exactly news.

1st + top prospect (preferably a natural winger) + serviceable roster player (probably some salary dump necessary to make it feasible, ie: a guy that's useful but overpaid for what he brings) is what I'd want back.
I'm sure Buffalo would be willing to retain some salary, and I'd be willing to add some conditionals based on whether Vanek re-signs with the team he's traded to or not.

I would love to have him on the Flyers for the right price.

Imagine a line of Vanek - Giroux - Voracek. Yummy.

it still comes down to salary cap space. The Flyers simply do not have the cap space to do this....

Devils make perfect sense, fills their biggest need for secondary scoring and New Jersey has a TON of cap room to add him.

With the compliance buyout this summer, and whatever would be traded for Vanek from Philly or whoever, i doubt it is much of an issue.

I assume that the Flyers just don't care about their other needs at this point.

Toronto will inquire but Buffalo will likely trade him out of the conference.

The same team that looks primed for a rebuild after Brodeur retires? I don't see why going there is good for Vanek.

Someone take away Holmgren's cell phone.

This isn't a move that the Flyers need to make. Keep the 11th, draft Ristolainen / Zadorov / Pulock, and continue to develop the team's young NHL forwards.

Can't see NJD making a play for a guy with one year to UFA.

Ottawa is the team I'd look for to make a really good offer.

Gonchar is coming off the books at the end of this season creating lots of salary room, they've needed another star forward since Heatley left town and they've got one of the deepest pools of young talent.

They could easily put together a package including some of the following quality assets: 1st/2nd round picks, Michalek (who could be dealt to a 3rd team), Zibanejad, Conachor, Silfverbeg, Ceci.

Would Minny be interested after they (presumably) buy out Heatley? Not familiar with their cap numbers. I doubt they want to surrender a slew of prospects again to get him, though. Vanek played in Minnesota and I believe might live there in the summer.

There will be a lot of teams not interested. His cap hit makes it very difficult for a number of team close to the cap to acquire him. The fact he is scheduled for UFA next offseason makes him extremely risky for a lot of teams.

There will certainly be no shortage of teams to bid, but far from every team.

Not even equal to what Pominville returned, and I think it goes without saying Vanek is the better and more valuable player between the two.

Vanek would, of course, look phenomenal on the Flyers' top like with Giroux and either Voracek or Hartnell. The main barriers are the usual ones: the king's ransom the Sabres would (very reasonably) be asking and the cap hit under the Flyers' current cap situation.

I didn't even realize Regier and Vanek had sat down yet and discussed his future in Buffalo, I don't think they have yet. Thomas said if it was going to be a short rebuild then he would stick around.

I wonder who would have the best offer.

The Wild are definitely interested, but the question is whether they are willing to give up the young assets after they gave up so much for Pominville.

Something like Setoguchi + Dumba + Zucker.

But that would probably create an organization hole.

After giving up as many assets as they did in the Pominville trade, I can't see them wanting to completely gut their prospect depth to also acquire Vanek. They've got a lot of salary tied up in a few players (Parise, Suter, Koivu, and Pominville (assuming they re-sign him)), and with the cap coming down, I think it's going to be really important to them to have young players on ELCs contributing.

I could see Buffalo using it's picks (8 in the first two rounds for the next two drafts) in order to move up this year and then dealing Vanek and Miller to recoup some of that ammo.
