Can't see NJD making a play for a guy with one year to UFA.
In general or this particular year?

Cause Kovy was a UFA to be.

As for Vanek? WANT. He's exactly what we need... scoring. - 9th overall + a prospect or two.
Not sure what it would take. 9th & Merrill?

They could easily put together a package including some of the following quality assets: 1st/2nd round picks, Michalek (who could be dealt to a 3rd team), Zibanejad, Conachor, Silfverbeg, Ceci.
Agreed, Ottawa has a really good prospect pool.

I know Briere wouldn't be a big peice in the trade, but what if the Flyers worked a deal around Briere++ for Vanek. Of course the ++ would have to be substantial, but it would make it doable with the salary cap. Briere loved Buffalo and might welcome back a trade there. He is perfect for a rebuilding team too. Low salary and big cap hit.

Yeah that's what the Flyers need, more offense, less D and goaltending .

Sabres can also retain some of Vanek's cap hit to increase value. Who wants Vanek at a 3.5M cap hit?

Briere is a prime buyout candidate. If Buffalo wants him and he'd like to come back, it would make a heck of a lot more sense just to wait until Philly buys him out and then sign him.

Edit:

Looks like we're on the same page.

They might take Briere, but I bet they`re looking for some youth too. Couturier or whatever pick Flyers end up with will be heading back to Buffalo. - Briere doesn`t have much value, I think. Unless it`s playoff time.

The Flyers weren't quite lighting up the lamp this season.

Something like Setoguchi + Dumba + Zucker.

But that would probably create an organization hole.
Parise, Koivu, Pominville, Zucker, Coyle, Setoguchi vs Suter, Brodin, Gilbert, hmm... tough choice.

You got some great prospects and some really good keyrole players. Your biggest need is strengthen the D. So you shouldn't trade away Dumba for a fwd IMO. Have patience .

Columbus-- made a great run, but having another top 6 player would be great. There's cap space to work with as well as draft picks and prospects to send back in return. BUT, the pending UFA status probably doesn't play well since Gaborik is a UFA at the same time.

Does Minnesota want to go from a top-3 prospect pool to a bottom-3 prospect pool after trading with us?

I understand he is a buyout candidate and he could sign there for cheaper. Im saying the Flyers could try to add him to make the cap work for us. You still save 1mill+(on the cap, much more in salary) with the deal and would gain substantial parts with the ++. I'm saying Briere is literally a throw in so we don't have to buy him out. The way it seems, Buffalo isn't close to contending and are going to rebuild. They can have Briere for 3 million next year and 2 the next to be a role model for these young players you bring in like Grigs and future draft picks.

You would still get the value of Vanek, just plus Briere in the trade.

Their fwd's are very young, they're still developing. Look at that D . Timonen is gonna be gone soon too. They need to strenghen that more than they need fwd's.

Sign some veteran fwd's, watch Giroux, Schenn, Couts, Simmonds, Voracek continue to develop and the goalscoring will come. And they won't let in a gazillion of goals.

I think this year. Any team that tries to trade for him would have to know if he would be willing to sign an extension.

For the Devils such a deal would likely have to be this years first, Henrique and either Salvador or Tallinder. That gives Buffalo two good young pieces (one who can go in the lineup immediately) and a veteran defensemen who can play for and help for the next year or two (Buffalo will probably have to take some salary back the other way for a deal to work).

For the Devils in that situation Vanek has to be willing to sign an extension or it is no deal.

Well, kings need a left winger but won't have the cap space for him. What exactly is buffalo looking for? We've got bernier on the table for miller's inevitable departure but else is needed?

Devils should not do any inquiring unless they can extend him as part of the deal.

Its only a matter of time before he's gone. Whether thats via trade or free agency will be up to Buffalo management.
