1st + top prospect (preferably a natural winger) + serviceable roster player (probably some salary dump necessary to make it feasible, ie: a guy that's useful but overpaid for what he brings) is what I'd want back.
I'm sure Buffalo would be willing to retain some salary, and I'd be willing to add some conditionals based on whether Vanek re-signs with the team he's traded to or not.
If vanek is asking to get out it will lower his trade value imo but if bufflao is willing to take 2-3 million I could see la offering something like Bernier martinez Kozun Which would be jump starting a rebuild if needed kozun can be switched to nolan not sure that helps much thou
Off topic: Mods, time to merge and make an all purpose Vanek thread with the other two? Just throwing it out there
On the topic of Vanek; like someone else mentioned, Ottawa would be an awesome fit and definitely have the pieces to make it work. Don't think Buffalo could stomach sending him in division or Ottawa rolls the dice on him unless they can negotiate an extension
I think this year. Any team that tries to trade for him would have to know if he would be willing to sign an extension.
For the Devils such a deal would likely have to be this years first, Henrique and either Salvador or Tallinder. That gives Buffalo two good young pieces (one who can go in the lineup immediately) and a veteran defensemen who can play for and help for the next year or two (Buffalo will probably have to take some salary back the other way for a deal to work).
For the Devils in that situation Vanek has to be willing to sign an extension or it is no deal.
Would rather have Merrill in the deal than Henrique, tbh. Buffalo's depth in terms of young centers over the past year or so has gone from amongst the worst in the league to amongst the best. 2 years ago -- which, keep in mind, is before we tried Ennis at C -- our top center under 25 was probably Luke Adam; now we've got Hodgson, Ennis, Foligno (has been tried there, not sure if he'll stick there), Grigorenko, Larsson, and Girgensons.
Darcy Regier: "Thomas after careful consideration we are ready to move on from the Jason Pominville era of captaincy. You said once that you were pissed that you weren't picked to be captain by Lindy Ruff and we feel you are the best choice to lead this team. Also I've talked with the new coach and we will no longer stick you in front of the net all game and get you injured like every other year. Also you will get more than 12 minutes of ice time a game this season, how does that sound?"
Thomas Vanek: "Well that sounds great and all and I'm glad you finally think that but..."
Darcy Regier: "We also want to extend you 6 years at $7.75 Million per year."
Thomas Vanek: "Does that #26 jersey over there already have the C on it?"
