He's a great skater, but his offensive game needs work. It's coming around, but he can probably use another season or two at the QMJHL to work on his offensive game. He's also a bigger player, so you're looking at about 3 to 4 years at the NHL before his game really translates.

In terms of development path, it really varies. If he doesn't become an offensive player, at the very least, you've got a Martin Hanzal type player on your hands. If Gauthier develops an offensive game, he could be a Patrice Bergeron type of player. He really has excellent offensive upside though, so it's very possible he can reach that ceiling.
They had a Halifax/Rimouski game on the NHL Network earlier this year. Gauthier's line had the responsibility of going up against Drouin/MacKinnon's line and did a very good job of containing them. I'm sure there's not many guys that can say they did that this year. I liked what I saw from him that game.

Gotta think though with the 11th pick you dont take a pure defensive player.

Oh I don't think they'll take him with the 11th pick. I was just saying I like him as a prospect with my limited view of him and stuff I read about him.

Anyone know much about Shea Theodore? I see he put up great numbers although is plus minus is pretty scary. Im guessing he was just on a bad team though, right?

He might be the best defensive forward this draft, but there is untapped offensive ability in Gauthier. He had 60 points in 62 games while being assigned defensive duty. He's also growing into that big frame of his. Once he really becomes comfortable with his big frame, he's going to be a force to deal with.

Here's some highlights to watch of Gauthier.

NHL.com already has him as Flyers property? Google search brings up a Flyers profile for Nikita Zaytsev.

Might be the best pure offensive defenseman in the draft, but has a long ways to go defensively. He did play on a bad team, however. If he's there in the second still, you have to consider him. Can't teach his offense.

It is the 30th in Russia.

There is one for the Ducks and Red Wings, too.

Russia hasn't released their WC roster yet, but Zaitsev is in the mix for a spot I believe. As a reference, Joonas Jarvinen was rumored to Nashville a good bit before the WC's and didn't end up officially signing until May 30th. So this could play out for a bit. Probably shouldn't get my hopes up.

Just an FYI, Colorado made profit last year and are no where near bankruptcy. We're close to the cap floor because our owner is cheap, not because the franchise doesn't make money. There are no financial problems in Colorado. Attendance problems, yes. But not financial problems.

Agreed - I doubt Nurse is still there but Zadarov maybe and probably Ristolainen. I like Ristolainen - he's a Finn right? They usually seem to be hard working, team player types. Except for Pitkanen who is a bit of a flake.

Eh, but I still wouldnt take that kind of player at 11. We picked up arguely the 2nd best defensive forward last draft. I'd just feel at 11 we should be taking either an offensive guy to play with Giroux in a few years or a defender to play in the top 4. Don't know how I feel with a decently high pick and picking a 3rd or 4th line center again.

Lulz. Don't know if it's been posted anywhere but the Mock Draft done by Grant Sonier on ESPN Insider didn't even have Nurse in the Top 14 picks. Has the Flyers taking Mirco Mueller, who I haven't even heard of.

There's also Nikita Fouganthine. He's bad news.

I'm glad of the outcome. Obviously it was marginally disappointing that the big-time 1.5% shot didn't pay out, but it wasn't Edmonton or Joisey. I was hoping for Colorado as my first choice after the Flyers.

Mueller has been a 2nd/3rd round player but since about the WJC, he's risen like crazy

Mueller is a guy who could go a lot higher than people think. Big projectable frame, good skater, and developing offensive game. Lots of upside, but I question his IQ and positioning. He's a good ways off from making an impact at the NHL level.

Him and Zykov are probably two of the biggest risers in this draft.

Mueller was rated a B prospect (2nd or 3rd rounder) initially. Zykov was rated a C prospect (4th rounder or later) initially. Mueller and Zykov are both in the top 20 on most lists now.
