Penguins arena?

Listening to the fan 590 out of Toronto, they had a guest on (can't remember his name) who was talking about the Pittsburgh situation.
Basically he said it isn't as dire as it seems and believe it or not the pens do have a plan. Says they obviously are stock piling the young inexpensive talent, and the arena plans are pretty much on hold until after the CBA. Many investors are waiting to see the upside from the new cba. He did mention the Pens will be one of the few teams that look like they will make a small amount of money...this happens when your payroll is less than 20 million.
Apparently there is a new idea being floated that the arena be funded out of casino surpluses...and not tax payers.
Apparently Lemieux spoke out today about the Pens situation, anyone know anything about this?

A new arena with new revenue and a new cba with a stockpile of young talent (perhaps Ovechkin or Crosby) could make the pens a powerful team in 5 years if you ask me...

As dismal as

The only problem with the horse track surplus(not Casino) is that governor Ed Rendell(D) is highly in favor of it and the rest of the state is against it...

Who knows who wins out, here's hoping Rendell does.

I say it's 50/50 that an arena is built.

Well, whoever this guy was, I would take whatever he said with a grain of salt. The arena needs to be done BEFORE the CBA, or else the team will be sold (and moved).

Mind you I know next to nothing about the politics and finances that go along with this, but it seems like if the slots are legalized (which we'll know sometime in January) the arena is 95% likely, it's just a matter of scrounging up the rest of the cash. If they aren't legalized, it's probably more 50/50. I don't know if they have a plan after that, and Rendell is kind of holding them hostage to further his own gain (the slots).

The sad thing is that it will have little to do with attendance, so the Pens could be selling out every night and that wouldn't help their chances at all. The bottom line though is that Pittsburgh will need a new arena if not now, then 5-10 years down the road.

If the slots/horse track are a go it's probably closer to 100%, without it though it's, at best, 50%.

I don't think the slots thing is going to go through because of the republicans.

I don't tend to like to point fingers and I am not a member of any political party(dad is a democrat, mom is a republican, me and my siblings are independants), but if this thing doesn't go through it is only because of the republicans...

Perhaps. But at the same time, didn't Governor Ridge give the Penguins his full support of funds without the need for slots?

What's the deal with the horse track thing, is it possible to get funding from either or, and not both?

Assuming a deal gets done before 09-04, we're very likely at least three years away from an arena. Although I recognize there have been artist's renderings and whatnot, there haven't been any official proposals put forth by well known arena architects, have there?

That process will take 6 months, then once accepted, probably another 6 months to break ground, and two years to build it. So the question is, can the Pens remain a viable franchise in the interim, even with their relatively inexpensive talent?

A move looks likely to me at this point... sad but true.

I don't think that'll be much of an issue. They're looking to lose no more than 5 million this season, and most likely a cleaned-up CBA will help somewhat.

They could always sign a lease before the arena is finished and then sell the team to someone with deeper pockets.

I, nor anyone in the organization is, or at least should be, worried about the next 3/4 years.

It's after that.

Once the lease at the Igloo is up it's life or death.

And whatever Ridge did has no meaning anymore, he's 2 governors removed now...

Im sure they have a plan decided on and only need to tweak it to where the Arena will be built. It takes 18 months to build an arena, and there should be no problems with the team since a new arena is a sign of security.
