Actually Vanek is the 11th most paid forward. I thought his cap hit was 7.5M not 7.14M.

Even still, over the last few years he hasn't produced as a Top 15 forward in the game, despite being paid as one. And when he isn't scoring he is invisible.

For what it's worth, Vanek would score all of the goals next to stastny.

Yea he and Stastny would be a lethal duo together.

I would put our 2014 1st on the table for him(Assuming we took Jones with our 1st this year). But not much more then that, and judging by the Sabres asking price, that wouldn't be enough.

I would love to see Vanek with Stastny.

It would give us three solid pairings:
Duchene-Pappy
Landy-ROR
Vanek-Stastny
If that was enough to keep ROR and Stastny happy and extended I'd seriously explore it. But...if it doesn't keep both ROR and Stastny and we end up losing Vanek after one year on top of the 1st we'd have to give to get him...that would probably end the career of whoever is GM at the time.

I don't get all the love for Vanek anyways. Obviously I would like to have him on the Avs, I just don't see him being worth a whole lot given that he wants out of BUF and is a UFA in a year.

On the main boards, they seemed to be wanting 2 1sts + Top prospect + roster player.
That doesn't seem terrible to me. Those are two pretty good players, and the Avs gave up a 1st and a 2nd just for Varlamov, and he's not as good as Miller.

Or are they suggesting that for just Vanek?

They were suggesting the 2 1st + top prospect + another forward just for Vanek.

Varlamov + Stas + Jones was for Miller and Vanek.

Its not bad, and we probably do get the better players right now. But I am still very high on Varly and with a good Defense in front of him I think he can be a Top 10 goalie in the league, possibly Top 5.

And I feel we shouldn't trade Stastny before seeing what he can do under a new coach.

Jones who? DAVID Jones? We think trading Stastny, Varlamov, and David Jones for Vanek and Miller is overpayment?

Stastny and Vanek are both UFAs next summer. Vanek is the better player.

Jones has negative value. We can't pay somebody to take his remaining $12,000,000 off our books.

Miller is older than Varlamov but is also better. Varlamov has potential and that's pretty much it right now.

--

Stastny < Vanek
Jones <<< Nothing
Varlamov >/= Miller

Buffalo would be insane to do that trade. Vanek's more valuable than Stastny, and Miler is better than Varlamov. I probably don't even have to get into Jones' contract. The only potential upside for them (a rebuilding team) would be Varlamov.

That's too much for Vanek with his contract, most I'd do is our 2nd this year plus 1st next year and Sgarbossa, plus Jones (If they wanted him.) Which is actually close but on the lower end of what they're saying they want. It's basically a late first (our 2nd) + a mid round 1st (Hopefully) + a good prospect + a reclamation project in Jones. There is no one off our roster at wing or center I'd part with because we would just have to find a way to replace them, unless it was a bottom 6 type player like Olver or Mitchell.

Miller may be better than Varly but he also only has one year left on his contract, and I personally would have zero interesting in swapping Varly for Miller. Miller is a freakin headcase, and hes vocal about it as well.

After the good news we can finally pencil Jones into next years top pairing and stop looking for that dman. Lets have a look at next year.

Out

Hejduk
Kobasew
Bordeleau
All ?'s^

In

Seth Jones

Possible UFA
Clowe?
Jagr since he cares more about money than a stanley cup?

Let's say we offer Clowe a contract. Unlikely but worth a look

Clowe Duchene Parenteau
Landy O'Reilly Downie
Mcginn Stastny Jones
Mcleod Mitchell Olver

EJ Jones
Hejda Barrie
Wilson Eillott
Siemens?

We still have work to do. I know we shouldn't change too much since our team is young and growing, but I'd love to see a shake up. Maybe say goodbye to one of our d prospects and a D vet for a winger. Hunwick+Elliott for a decent winger? Maybe even add Staz to that package to a contender for a great young winger like Voracek or bobby ryan.

Lots can happen. Let's just hope things get back on track for this franchise.

McGinn - Duchy - PAP (9.25)
Lando - ROR - Jagr (14)
Downie - Staz - Jones (13.25)
McLeod - Mitchell - Bordy (2.8)
Olver, Malone, Vincour, PJ, Hejduk?

Jones - EJ (7.5)
Wilson - Barrie (3.15)
Hejda - Elliott (4.15)
SOB, Hunwick, Zanon

Varly
Giggy

That's 58.5 mil before scratches and frees up plenty of cash for extensions over the summer.

There could be crazy competition for spots on D next year. Jones will get one for sure and what if Siemens impress in camp. Barrie and Elliott has staked their claim and EJ/Wilson/Hejda will be there.

Might be bad news for Zanon/O'Brien.

There's no way Siemens makes it next year after only playing in the WHL again this past season. Barrie and Elliott are just finding their mojo now after how long in the AHL?

I'd keep Pajamas and Hunnybuns. Preferably both as 7th Dmen and 13th forwards though.

Here's what I would hope for us to do:

- We trade Obrien for a 5th or 6th.
- Ship Zanon off on a boat bound for the Arctic.
- Ship Jones(David) off on the same boat.
- Sign Andrew Ferrence or Rob Scuderi or Mark Streit
- Sign Ryder/Macarthur/Filppula/Clowe/Raymond

UFA - Duchene - PAP
Landy - ROR - Downie
McGinn - Stastny - UFA
McCleod - Mitchell - Bordeleau
Pajamas - Olver - Vincour

Jones - EJ
UFA - Barrie
Hejda - Wilson
Hunwick

I don't want to sign any long term FAs with big extensions coming up, we have no idea how bad or good their seasons could be.

Duchy, ROR, Staz, Barrie, Elliott, Varly and Lando are all up next offseason, we could be looking at 15 mil added to the cap from them alone. Assume 70mil and we need to be around 55-58 this offseason leading into next year to be safe. Sure, we can buyout Jones and some guys will run out, but it's a lot of cash we need to plan for.

Yea, I would prefer to keep those guys if we can. Dmen can switch sided and play there opposite side fairly regularly.

EJ, Barrie, Elliott, Siemens, Jones. Between those 5 guys we should for certain find 2 Top pairing guys(EJ Jones the likely choices) and then 2 Top 4 guys.

If everything went according to plan. EJ and Jones create a monster top pairing and possibly best pairing in the league. Siemens develops into a monster defensively and basically a #2 Dman playing a #3 role. Elliott and Barrie both develop into top 3/4 guys for us.

I am actually one that believes all 5 of those guys still have Top pairing potential. Were in good shape on Defense with Jones. Really good shape.

I like, but I'd include Horton and Stalberg in that list. I think Scuderi is probably the best option for that D-UFA spot. Similar to Hejda but better, and it would give both Barrie and Elliott a strong defensive partner.

Or you could do something like this as well.

Barrie - EJ

Scuderi - Jones

Hejda - Elliott

Wilson - Hunwick

It's easy to swap Wilson in and send Elliott down to play with Siemens if need be as well.

Wilson - EJ

Scuderi - Jones

Hejda - Barrie

Hunwick

Siemens - Elliott (In the minors)

I think any hope for a UFA defender goes out the window with Jones.

1 way contracts:
EJ
Hejda
Wilson
Zanon
Hunwick
SOB

2 way contracts but should be in NHL next year:
Jones
Barrie
Elliott

That is 9 defensemen already. Some players already have to be moved to fit in Jones. IMO at least 2, but probably 3 would have to be moved to even think about a UFA defensemen.

2 of Hunwick, Zanon, and SOB should be dumped anyways. Whether traded for a 7th or something, bought out, or waived. Elliott could start with Siemens in the the AHL, and the 3rd of the three stooges could be dumped too if we really have a chance to bring in a quality UFA.

That said, there isn't much quality out there so I'm not too fussed if we go into the season with what we have as long as Barrie/Elliott/Jones play over the dead weight.
