Maybe it's not connected at all, but SKA reportedly wanted him too and was offering to pay him $4m/yr.

If you think he hasn't influenced other transfers, I don't know what to tell you.
I'm sure someone can come up with specific examples, as I'm not incredibly familiar with these things.
1. Barack Obama hosts a meeting where GMs of Edmonton and Washington are among the numerous attendees.

2. During the meeting the GMs start talking and agree to trade Nugent-Hopkins to Washington.

3. Some guy who doesn't know English claims that Obama intentionally facilitated the trade by setting up the meeting and influencing both parties.

You see how absurd that sounds? Seriously, Putin has waaaay more concerns than where a 17 year old kid plays hockey.

Fascinating thread. Most people can agree that the KHL is not always on the up-and-up, at least when compared to North American hockey. And I can imagine any young, talented, competitive kid getting a little pissed if he feels his future is being dictated to him. Maybe (possibly?) even pissed enough to buy out his contract.

No idea if Putin was involved. But it's curious. And it's really, really funny to watch people act as if this could never, ever happen. Without hesitation.

Patronage takes many forms.

Again, no idea if Putin was involved behind his role at gracious host. Just like I have no idea how money moves between Russian oligarchs and its political leadership.

But it's naive to think it's impossible.

Yeah, I remember "respected sources" saying Ovechkin, Kovalchuk etc. would stay in Russia after the lockout because Putin promised them a lot of money

What's absurd is you think you can compare the United States to Russia.

Imagine Putin's agenda for the day?:

9am- Meeting with deliagates from EU to discuss Energy Resource distribution
11am- Inspect readiness of the Black Sea Battle Fleet Group and the South Army Circle
2pm-Meet with Syrian minister to discuss the regional crisis
230pm- Bring Nichushkin from Traktor to Dinamo
3pm- Meet with the cabinet to discuss social issues goals for the year
5pm- Review upcoming appointments with NATO countries

A lot of North Americans still live in the mid 80s to early 90s.

I think your hypothetical is not a good one to prove your point. I could totally see Obama facilitating a trade between 2 teams.

I'm not insulting him or making a political point, or saying such a thing would be wrong, but I could totally see it. And as far as "better things to do".... I would assume a politician would have better things to do than go on tv to explain his ncaa brackets, or hold an easter egg hunt, or go on a late night talkshow... all things that US presidents have done.

Interesting question.
Put him on a line with Yakupov. Just need another Russian for a triumvirate.

I maintain that although Nichuschkin is the power forward that Edmonton may well need, I think they are going to be scared off by his contract status.

Edmonton cannot afford to wait for two years to elapse to fill that second line LW position.

Shame.

In all honesty...in another 2 yrs is when I would be expecting the Oilers to be true contenders ....but he may be coming over this yr anyway....

He'll be long gone before the Oilers pick. He's a perfect fit for the Hurricanes.

Semin has been great for them, give him a fellow Russian to mentor.

IF he wants to play in the NHL to win a cup. He would make a lot more in the KHL.

I'll be downright shocked if Rutherford picked him at #5.

Can you clarify what you mean? He has signed a two-year contract with Dynamo? Any details? Out clauses, etc?

Has Nichuskin ever come out and said that he wants to be in the NHL? Or is his desire in the KHL?
