ESPN's pre-season predictions are worth a chuckle

http://espn.go.com/nhl/preview2012/s...ds-predictions

Yes there's a Sabres logo that don't belong, no i don't know why it's there but it helps with the funny factor

Award watch is just as funny

Well Coyotes, Tampa bay, Predators and Panthers are out...

In NE, seems Boston and Ottawa did not do it (they could but Karlsson and Spezza is a pretty burden).

There are three logos I see there that may moy pass the first round:
LAK, NYR, BOS.

But we should revisit after PO...

Should be fun to see the Melrose line after first round...
Did he be against TBL and Stamkos?

AHahhah. The first guy picks Buffalo to win the East yet doesn't pick them to win the division.

Like 4 people picked NYR to win the East but not win their division. Is this actually their picks? It has to be a joke.

Seems legit.

When they pick who wins the East/West conferences, they mean playoffs wise.

Well, if they finished 4th and then made it to the finals, they'd have 'won' the East, but not the division...

Yes but where' the logic in that?
You're randomly guessing that the team who wins the East will do it as underdogs. What's the reasoning behind that? Are you assuming that team will make a deadline acquisition that will put them over the top? Or other teams will choke and suffer injuries?? I mean really, you can't predict that an underdog team will win before the season starts..It's a random guess.
As analysts, you'd think they would analyze each team and just go with whoever they feel is strongest. If you feel like Ottawa is the strongest team, then there's no reason to think Buffalo would then win the East.

Predictions are so useless because there's so many things that can happen. It's not even just limited to the team you're predicting to be the champs, so many things can happen to the rest of the other teams too. I think this really shows it.

The Rangers were dealt a blow to their defense with the injury to Staal. They are better than the spot they finished in the reg season. I wouldn't be surprised if they advance passed the Caps, but I expect another great series between these two.

It is funny but how far off is that from what most of us thought? I figured Bruins would win the division and we'd be fighting for 8th place overall and with luck would get in playoffs.

We're playing with house money at this point so far as I'm concerned

I don't see the problem, the Rangers are still an excellent team with an great goalie. They have as much as a chance as anyone. Plus most people would agree the addition of Nash should have given them a serious boost going into the shortened season.

What the ****...I don't understand.
Three of them picked the Blues to win the Cup? In 2013? This year?
Okay...I never knew until now that some people picked the Blues to win the Cup. Sorry.

I love how some of them don't know the how conferences/divisions work.

I also love how overrated the Rags were by the media going into this year.

Honestly, I thought the Blues would be contenders too. On paper they came into the season with the same defense as last year plus Tarasenko. Of course I should have knew Halak would break down.

Yeah. The "East" and "West" picks are the conference finalists, not their picks for who will finish 1st in those conferences.

Anyway I don't find much to laugh at here...most of these picks aren't far off from what people here expected in the off-season, and it's hard to fault any "out there" predictions since anything is possible in a lockout-shortened season. It's cool that the Habs upset the hockey world's expectations but I'm not going to laugh at someone for not predicting it...

Listen it is tough here in Jersey with alot of these fans. They always thought the big money free agents were going to bring the cup back to NY.[insert lindros and others here] torts is hard to stomach with his attitude during PC. He talks down to everybody. Hate the team, hate the fans, hate the coach, and hate the big city media telling us how superior their team is and yet dont cover it. [at least in toronto they cover the leafs..but rangers are 3rd and at times 4th fiddle here. behind yankees, giants, and knicks] `

It's not that strange. For buffalo its very strange but in general one might say a team is better suited for the playoffs than another.

For example, we rely on our PP more than a team like Boston. One might suggest we'd win the division but not a playoff series where whistles are sometimes put away. Not saying I agree with it but there is logic to it.

I have no problem saying Team A is more suited than Team B for the POs. But I have a hard time understanding making a prediction before the season that Team B will finish ahead of Team A but then not go further than them in the POs. Makes no sense to me.
It's not because Team A is built more for POs that they aren't as good as Team B for the regular season..

So as you said, Buffalo is just a completely random and strange pick.

As for your example, I disagree. If we remove our slump which really skewed a good part of our stats, we had a better scoring ratio at ES than Boston. What you said might have been true in previous years, but not this season. We were actually the third best team at ES for pretty much all year, battling that spot with Anaheim.

To get back to their predictions, I don't see what's really funny about them. Aside from the Buffalo one, you could have easily made a case for the teams mentioned.

I agree it isn't the case this year but in the past it has been. I was just trying to throw some logic but with buffalo winning the conference it becomes fairly difficult.

Yah, I don't see what's funny about the predictions either, except for buffalo.
