http://thefarmclub.net/2013/04/30/wh...ado-avalanche/

Not only does it feel like it's been forever since they've been relevant but I suddenly feel old as fug for fondly remembering their run in the 90s.

They were never the same after Skynet sent that machine after Joe Sakic

Sakic was still playing there a couple of seasons ago. It wasn't until he left that they spiritually rebuilt.

Sacco was told to tank and they did that.

Its clear they wanted Jones from day one, Colorado kid who grew up there, loves the team. Father played BB in Colorado.

You cant write this ****.

There was a time, from like 2008-2010 were every prospect seemed to be failing. When Sherman took over our team was a complete mess. He is also is getting some hard luck with guys being injured and forced to leave and upper management probably is forcing him to be overly stingy, which drove Anderson away(Sherman "discovered" him let's not forget), and nearly Ryan O'Reilly.

and his favorite player growing up was Nick Lidstrom.

Unfortunately, there's a whole generation of Avs fans who won't be offended by that.

Our old GM destroyed our youth by trying to calgary it up in Sakic's last years. Since then we've had to rebuild from essentially scratch. Now we're 3.5 years into the rebuild and Staz is the only guy left over from before the build. Add Jones, a real coach and a shrewd FA signing like Parenteau or Hejda, and the Avs will be back in the playoffs with an incredibly young team. They're deep at Cs with Dutchy, Radar and Staz, have a number of good top 6 wingers, a promising defense with EJ, Seth, Barrie, Elliott and Siemens, and have really built up a great goalie pipeline behind Varly.

Next year should bring us to year 5 of the rebuild at which point the team should start competing for realsies.

Prime example, along with the Oilers, of a team going with too much youth, albeit skilled, but with very few solid complimentary veterans. Their D is in shambles and Erik Johnson is not a number 1 D-man yet. He's got all the tools but he's the classic example of a D-man who doesn't reach his ceiling because he lacks hockey sense at the moment. That could change.

They need veterans filling up their bottom six and a couple of top 4 D-men.

What's funny is that Edmonton did the same yet Edmonton gets bashed like no tomorrow yet Colorado is ok to rebuild...

Colorado doesn't start a zillion threads about how their team is going to be a dynasty and compete every season. Colorado also hasn't had 3 consecutive 1st overalls.

We also went to the playoffs during our rebuild and haven't had 3 first overalls in a row. Plus our team tries to improve via trade and free agency. Not to mention our drafting outside the top 40 hasn't been bad.

Avs are rebuilding, Oilers are drafting. Sherman has made mistakes but he has made some pretty big moves. Oilers haven't done anything.

I think the main problem people have with Oilers is that they don't try to address their problems but keeps doing minor trades, sign players like Eager and Belanger and completely put everything on the shoulders of their kids. I hope MacTavish was genuine when he said he will be aggressive, because their needs can't be fixed only through drafting.

This.

I'm an Oiler fan and put all the blame on Tambellini.
Thankfully MacT says he expects to see 6-8 players not return (counting UFA's too).

Hopefully he keeps his word and doesnt sit on his hands.

Either their pro scouting is horrific or Sherman is just really bad at evaluating trades. Also, no Avalanche thread is complete without mentioning how terrible Sacco is/was.

The league made it illegal to simply buy cups. They were able to overpay for supplemental talent to complement their draft scores from the early 90's terrible Nordiques teams. The late '90s/early 00's when they were doing just that is the only era in which the Colorado/Quebec franchise has ever been good.

Where to even begin. We have an owner who could absolutely care less. Seriously couldn't care less about the Avs. Basically sees the Avs as a rent paying tenent at the Pepsi center (which he owns) when the Nuggets aren't playing (which he owns). You have a "President" who runs the team like the mafia and has lived off a false legacy for waaaay to long. He was great when he could spend like a drunken sailor for FA's. But did so at the expense of draft picks and young guys. When he could no longer do that, he showed his real worth. Add to that a long line of moronic coaching and GM hires, because again said "President" runs the Avs like the mafia and only hires people who are loyal members of the Avs family.

Then throw in players who are either to young/inexperienced or are WAAAAY overvalued *cough David Jones cough* and there ya go.

I'm from the Hershey area and the Nords/Avs have always been my team. I was over the moon when the Avs came to Hershey. Sadly though the way they ran that org. was a disgrace and you could see the writing was on the wall. They had/have no minor league system....

*edit* forgot to mention that 100% of their 1st 10 yrs of success in Denver was tied directly to the Lindros trade and getting Foppa and all the other players/picks.

I think you are wrong on the bolded part. I think he cares........as long as there is a profit to be made.
