Got it tonight from Clare Drake, mistaken about last year, I did get them from Lakehead, the ones before the TV games, But not this year.
On a related note, great basketball game on tonight, Eastlink local Cable, ch 10, Dal and X, all of a sudden went "ka-blink" although you could just make out the game, it was frozen and fuzzy and color mixed. Then it would flash ahead but still be frozen, anyway, they just gave up, no explanation, nothing, just packed it in. Reasonably close game too. Dal ahead by about 8 I believe.

BISONS ELIMINATED ON STRANGE BOUNCE

MANITOBA BISONS 1
ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 2

|> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]
|> [C.W. SATURDAY RECAP] ~ [U OF A SUMMARY & STORY] ~ [U OF M STORY]

Ugh! This was a pretty good playoff game with a fast pace and lots of hits. The Bisons had a rough patch in the 2nd period where they were outshot and outplayed for about a 10-12 minute stretch. But otherwise it was end-to-end all night. The winning goal was a shot going wide that hit Jordan Cyr in either the back of the head, butt, or skate and into the net. The announcers and game report saw it differently but I thought it was off the butt. Any way you slice it, it was not a "called shot".

The lone Bison goal was a 2-on-1 which started while the Bisons were short-handed and finished as Chad Erb just stepped out of the box. Nolan Waker fed Del Cowan a nice pass which was converted. Incidentally, Cowan narrowly missed another shorthanded chance earlier on.

On the weekend, neither side had a PP to speak of. Manitoba went o-5 on Friday and 0-4 on Saturday. Alberta was 1-5 on Friday and 0-5 on Saturday. That combines for 1-19.

But the story for the Bisons was the same as for most games after Christmas: they could generate but not convert scoring chances. One goal on 50 shots won't do it. Was Mucha hot? Maybe. But the stats have been the same most weekends lately. Not every goaltender they face can be on a hot streak.

The off-season shopping list for the Herd will be a goaltender to replace Steve Christie and as many scorers as possible. I would like to see Sidney Crosby rest up from the NHL for a season and play for the Bisons!

OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD:

  • SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 3
    CALGARY DINOS 2

    |> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]
    |> [C.W. SATURDAY RECAP] ~ [U OF C STORY] ~ [U OF S STORY]

This series is as expected. The teams have exchanged 3-2 wins and game 3 goes Sunday night at 8:00 CT. There is no on-line audio or video so it will be LeagueStat for live updates.

The CIS Playoff Schedule and Results are updated and the CIS Saturday Recap has reports from all three games.

    AUS Semi-Finals (best-of-five)

    Saint Mary's Huskies v St. Francis-Xavier X-men
    Game 1: Feb 25: Saint Mary's 3 St. F-X 5
    Game 2: Feb 27: St. F-X 3 Saint Mary's 4
    Game 3: March 1: St. F-X 3 Saint Mary's 2
Game 4: March 6: SSN WEBCAST
    Game 5: March 8

Sunday's game would complete the field for the nationals if St. F-X wins. In any event, the winner will play UNB for the AUS title and both finalists will be at the nationals. The game starts at 5:00 CT and is available at the SSN on-line link.

    OUA East Final (best-of-three)

    McGill Redmen v UQTR Patriotes
    Game 1: March 2: UQTR 3 McGill 5
    Game 2: March 4: McGill 1 UQTR 6
    Game 3: March 6

I have been unable to locate a link for a webcast of game 3. The McGilligutties would host the Urban Cowboys for the Queen's Cup with a win, whilst the Patties would visit the Urban Cowboys.

Western Ontario Mustangs v Guelph Gryphons
    Game 1: March 2: Guelph 1 W. Ontario 4
    Game 2: March 5: W. Ontario 4 Guelph 2
Game 3: March 6: not required, W. Ontario wins series 2-0

The Urban Cowboys breezed through the OUA West and have a berth at the nationals tucked away. With Lakehead going for a dump this year, and the rest of the teams playing at a homogenized Brock-level, there really was no other contender in this division.

CHRISTIE WILL BE TOUGH TO REPLACE
So, then, that's it for Steve Christie, who often carried this team on his back, especially last season. The Herd will have some big holes to fill. Besides Christie, it looks like Nolan Waker, Greg Beller and Riley Dudar have all used up their CIS eligibility. They'll take an even bigger hit if any of the following players decide not to come back for a fifth and final year: Mike Hellyer, Jared Walker, Kyle Howarth, Chris Benias, Travis Mealey, Jordan Cyr.

Cyr just got here so I believe that he has another year of academics. The other 4th years of course have decisions to make. But with the D being solid it makes for some quirky recruiting.

holley, what do you mean by quirky recruiting.
goaltender... is Deckert back? do we need 2 that could be tough. You already said they have a guy named lowry in the backyard? Quirky, not sure what that means?

All I know for sure is that the 5th years won't be back. However, many 4th years get their degree and then leave so they can stop being a poor student at long last.

The Bisons will need a goaltender and some forwards. What is quirky is that they will have all (or almost all) of what is already a quality D back.

DINOS TO MEET EVIL MONKEYS

SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 1
CALGARY DINOS 4

|> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]
|> [C.W. SUNDAY RECAP] ~ [U OF C STORY] ~ [U OF S SITE - STORY NOT YET POSTED]

The Dinos are finally returning to the nationals. Their last trip was in 2000. They grabbed a 2-0 1st period lead and then hung on until an empty-netter salted it away. So next weekend Calgary will visit the Evil Monkeys to fight for the conference title in a best-of-three before both sides take a weekend off before heading to the nationals in Fredericton, NB.

The Winnipeg Sun has a story by Ken Wiebe on the Bison loss to the Evil Monkeys.

The CIS Playoff Schedule and Results are updated. There is no CIS Sunday Recap as yet.

AUS Semi-Finals (best-of-five)

Saint Mary's Huskies v St. Francis-Xavier X-men
Game 1: Feb 25: Saint Mary's 3 St. F-X 5
Game 2: Feb 27: St. F-X 3 Saint Mary's 4
Game 3: March 1: St. F-X 3 Saint Mary's 2
Game 4: March 6: Saint Mary's 4 St. F-X 1 [BOXSCORE]
Game 5: March 8: NewsCast Link : EastLink

So, it all comes down to a one-game showdown for a spot in the nationals and a championship series against The Squirrels. The teams have been taking turns so far but it seemed that SMU really controlled game 4 (shots were 37-17). You can check the links at game time for on-line viewing, i.e. 5:00 CT on Tuesday.

OUA East Final (best-of-three)

McGill Redmen v UQTR Patriotes
Game 1: March 2: UQTR 3 McGill 5
Game 2: March 4: McGill 1 UQTR 6
Game 3: March 6: UQTR 1 McGill 6 [BOXSCORE]

This was a disappointing series. The teams took turns beating each other 6-1, which really defies all logic. So the McGilligutties will face the Urban Cowboys for the OUA title, aka Queen's Cup. Frankly, I am disappointed that they only play a one-game series for this. Come on, people. The problem your OUA teams have at nationals is the lack of competition against A level teams and then you do this to them. IMO with nationals not set to start until March 24th these teams could use a 3 game series.

The field for the nationals is taking shape. Once the conference winners have been decided we will know the top 3 seeds, and then the rest will be rigged to split the conference reps into separate pools.

ST. F-X COMPLETES FIELD FOR NATIONALS

AUS Semi-Finals (best-of-five)

Saint Mary's Huskies v St. Francis-Xavier X-men
Game 1: Feb 25: Saint Mary's 3 St. F-X 5
Game 2: Feb 27: St. F-X 3 Saint Mary's 4
Game 3: March 1: St. F-X 3 Saint Mary's 2
Game 4: March 6: Saint Mary's 4 St. F-X 1
Game 5: March 8: St. F-X 3 Saint Mary's 2 (2OT) [BOXSCORE] : [RECAP]

I caught the ending of the game on-line when the teams were really worn out. Last year, SMU won the national title and St. F-X knocked UNB out of contention in the semi-finals.

The six qualifiers for the nationals all have conference finals starting this weekend. Alberta-Calgary is a best-of-three, McGill-W.Ontario is a one game winner-take-all, and UNB-St.F-X is a best-of-five.

EVIL MONKEYS POISED TO WIN ANOTHER

CALGARY DINOS 0
ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 3

|> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]
|> [C.W. RECAP] ~ [U OF A STORY] ~ [U OF C STORY]

This game was fairly evenly played. However. Mu-u-u-cha (that's how monkeys pronounce it) was stellar in goal. IMO, it might be better for Calgary to go to nationals as #2. That way they would likely end up playing the Squirrels and the Urban Cowboys.

Saturday's game is on SSN for your on-line viewing pleasure.

AUS Final (best-of-five)

UNB Varsity Reds v St. Francis-Xavier X-men
Game 1: March 11: St. F-X 2 UNB 3
Game 2: March 12: St. F-X @ UNB [SSN WEBCAST]
Game 3: March 15: UNB @ St. F-X
Game 4: March 16: UNB @ St. F-X
Game 5: TBD

BISON BROADS SUFFER BIG LOSS

Friday Games

Laurier Golden Hawks 4
Manitoba Bisons 0

[CIS STORY, SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTS]

This loss pretty much finishes the Bison Broads. If they can beat St FX by 7 goals then each team would have a win and a loss and then they'd win on +/-. So it looks like they'll either be playing for bronze, or 5th.

Queen's Golden Gaels 2
Alberta Pandas 1

(in shoot-out)
[CIS STORY, SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTS]

Yes, they do have shoot-outs in the round-robin portion of the nationals. So the Fat Pandas will play for 5th. McGill and Queen's will decide on Saturday which will play for gold and which will play for bronze.

Dinos got pumped 8-1 last night???? wow except for the Herds victories last year in Sask, home ice in the playoffs is fairly vital!

Holley do you have the manpower to look up the playoff home dominance say over the last 10 years could be interesting.
One might suggest a best of 5 might even it out just a little!

8 friggin 1?? looks like the mighty dinos and winston howell III get the yankees/squirrels on thursday night in freddie beach.
better study the Xmens trap!!!!!!!! seems that is the only way to slow em down?
thursday night will be all or nothing for the mighty dinos, there isnt a chance in you know where that western is getting it done! nothing better than seeing the reds get handed some more nuts this year. but they might be too strong. and what is with the women? thought they would be in final for sure?
Wick is CIS player of the year?? they must really need the national attention? that girl didnt even travel with her team mates. they bus she flys.barry bonds of the cis womens gig!!!! (just by the way she expects to be treated!)

EVIL MONKEYS DEMOLISH DINOS

CALGARY DINOS 1
ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 8

|> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]
|> [C.W. RECAP] ~ [U OF A STORY] ~ [U OF C STORY]

I saw some of this on-line while watching the Leafs take another step towards the Stanley Cup on TV. Calgary sucked. Are they suffering from being happy to get this far?

Alberta outshot Calgary 18-5 in the 1st period but were only up 2-1. Rather than take satisfaction that they dodged a bullet and pick themselves up for the 2nd, instead Calgary fell apart. Alberta racked up 5 unanswered goals in the 2nd. Calgary started their back-up goaltender Kris Lazaruk before yanking him after giving up 4 goals.

Alberta is looking stronger as the season progresses. However, it also seems clear that Manitoba was their toughest opponent.

AUS Final (best-of-five)

UNB Varsity Reds v St. Francis-Xavier X-men
Game 1: March 11: St. F-X 2 UNB 3
Game 2: March 12: St. F-X 2 UNB 1 (ot) : [BOXSCORE]
Game 3: March 15: UNB @ St. F-X
Game 4: March 16: UNB @ St. F-X
Game 5: TBD

Queen's Cup (one game)

McGill Redmen v Western Ontario Mustangs
Game 1: March 12: McGill 6 W. Ontario 2 : [BOXSCORE]

The three conference winners will be seeded 1, 2, and 3 for the nationals. And since there are 2 teams per conference there will be one team from each conference in each pool.

Therefore, I believe that the pools will be like this if UNB beats StFX:
A: UNB, Calgary, W. Ontario
B: McGill, Alberta, St. FX

But, if St FX beats UNB I bet they'll look like this:
A: McGill, UNB, Calgary
B: Alberta, St. FX, W. Ontario

BISON BROADS LOSE, PLAY FOR 5TH

Saturday Games

Manitoba Bisons 3
St. Francis-Xavier X-Women 4

[CIS STORY, SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTS]

After a bad game on Friday the Bison Broads had only an outside chance to advance even with a win. The reason was hat if all sides had a 1-1 record, that 4-0 loss would kill them in the +/-. IMO, they still overachieved by winning the CW and getting to nationals ahead of Sask and Calgary. And, is it just me or does the nickname "X-Women" conjure an image of a woman wearing nothing but a lacy thong and high heels?

McGill Martlets 3
Queen's Golden Gaels 1

[CIS STORY, SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTS]

This was a closely contested pool and McGill will play for gold, as expected, and Queen's will play for bronze.

Sunday Games

11:00 CT
Manitoba Bisons v Alberta Pandas

3:00 CT
Laurier Golden Hawks v Queen's Golden Gaels

6:30 CT

No - I'm not a CIS Insider (but that would be a fun job).

My speculations are based soundly on the CIS Regulations for the UCup. The Conference champions are ranked 1/2/3 and teams from the same conference are to be split. Rankings are used in this case (2 teams from each conference) to determine who is 1/2/3.

My only assumption is McG will remain higher than ALB. Since both won their titles (McG on the road and ALB in a sweep) I don't see the Ranking Committee changing their selections so dramatically as to make ALB #2 - but it could happen. This would allow ALB to become #1 if UNB should falter in the AUS Finals.

UPDATE

WOMEN'S NATIONALS

Manitoba Bisons 2
Alberta Pandas 5

[CIS STORY, SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTS]

It is kind of odd that they have a 5th place game in the women's nationals and don't even play a 3rd place in men's. Anyhow, the Bison Broads are probably happy they even made nationals this year.

Laurier Golden Hawks 0
Queen's Golden Gaels 1

[CIS STORY, SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTS]

Queen's got the bronze with this one. Which makes sense since they beat Laurier in the OUA playoffs.

St. Francis-Xavier X-Women 2
McGill Martlets 5

[CIS STORY, SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTS]

McGill went unbeaten and one must say are deserving of a national title. It seems that after them the next 7 or 8 teams in the CIS are of relatively equal strength but McGill are clearly #1 in broad hockey.

AUS Final (best-of-five)

UNB Varsity Reds v St. Francis-Xavier X-men
Game 1: March 11: St. F-X 2 UNB 3 : [BOXSCORE]
Game 2: March 12: St. F-X 2 UNB 1 (ot) : [BOXSCORE]
Game 3: March 15: UNB 2 St. F-X 0 : [BOXSCORE]
Game 4: March 16: UNB 3 St. F-X 6 : [BOXSCORE] : [RECAP]
Game 5: March 18: St. F-X 4 UNB 5 (ot) : [BOXSCORE]

So #1 ranked UNB gets a real scare by their nemesis from St. F-X. This means that UNB will get the #1 seed and be in one pool whilst McGill and Alberta are in the other pool. Since St. FX must be in an opposite pool, they will be in with Alberta and McGill whilst Calgary and the Urban Cowboys will join the Squirrels.

I'll be interested to see how the schedule will work for the nationals. UNB will likely play Thursday and crush either Calgary or W-Ontario, leaving the loser disheartened and basically eliminated heading into Friday's game.

St. FX reminds me of the Bisons. And the Bisons have been able to play the Evil Monkeys dead even the last 3 years. Everybody will also want to see how McGill stacks up after dominating the OUA all year.

CLOSE BATTLES ON DAY 1

CHAMPIONSHIP SITE
SSN CANADA - ONLINE WEBCASTS

ST. FRANCIS-XAVIER X-MEN 1
MCGILL REDMEN 2

|> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]
|> [CIS STORY]

This was the afternoon game so I was unable to watch. St. FX had beaten McGill in OT in a non-conference game earlier this year so it figured to be a tight one. McGill dominated the OUA-E this year and St. FX was considered a rising star due to their win over SMU and tight loss to UNB in the AUS playoffs.

St. FX now plays the Evil Monkeys on Friday afternoon whilst the McGilligutties will face them on Saturday. This always figured to be the "Pool of Death" and I find it hard to make one side a big favourite.

CALGARY DINOS 1
NEW BRUNSWICK VARSITY REDS 2

|> [LEAGUESTAT SUMMARY] ~ [CIS BOXSCORE]
|> [CIS STORY]

I saw this one on-line from mid-1st period onwards. Calgary was unlucky to lose. The Squirrels scored with only 4 seconds left from a face-off.

Calgary now faces the Urban Cowboys on Friday night. Like St FX, they must win and then hope that the team they beat can come back and win the next day, then hope to win the pool on +/-.

NEXT UP:

Friday
12:00 CDT St. FX v Alberta : [SSN WEBCAST]

Saturday
12:00 CDT Alberta v McGill : [SSN WEBCAST]

Before going into the nationals, I should mention that Bison d-man Jeremy Schappert won a pair of awards. First, he won CW rookie (freshman) of the year. Then before the nationals started he was named to the CIS All-Rookie Team. Hopefully he will have several more seasons. The Bison blue-line may well return intact in 2011-12.

ST. FRANCIS-XAVIER X-MEN 3
ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 1

This result throws the pool into a bit of disarray heading into Saturday afternoon's finale. McGill is 1-0 (+1), SFX 1-1 (+1), and the Monkeys 0-1 (-2). So, if McGill beats Alberta they will go to the final. But if Alberta wins by 1 or 2 goals, SFX goes to the final. If Alberta win by 4 or more then they go to the final. But if Alberta wins 3-0 I think they have to have a shoot-out with SFX. Ugh.

This pool was expected to be a toss-up and this is proving true. The fact that Alberta could not get a second goal is costly. SFX took the 3-1 lead early in the 3rd and then shut 'er down. IMO, SFX looks very similar to the Bisons.

CALGARY DINOS 2
WESTERN ONTARIO MUSTANGS 3

I know that Calgary would have telling themselves that with a win they could hold out hope that the Urban Cowboys would upset the Squirrels and land themselves a berth in the final. But really? This has been an evenly matched tournament thus far but if any game is going to change that it will be Saturday night's round-robin finale. I see that UWO had only 4 shots in the 3rd period. Yikes. Too bad for the Dinos. Had they beaten UNB I believe that they would have been on their way to the final.

MEDIA REVIEW:

Of course, start with the sources that cover the CIS all year, namely The CIS Blog, where they have live blogs during each game. (Which is nice when you are watching on SportsNet!) They also have a Day 1 Recap. They also have loads of links to other media stories.

And, South Campus Sports has a story about the 0-2 start after Alberta's loss.

Here's a summary of the stories from other media that you can check out:

SQUIRRELS AND MCGILLIGUTTIES MAKE IT AN ALL-RED FINAL

ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 3
MCGILL REDMEN 6

Since Alberta lost their first game by 2 goals, this game had a surreal feel about it. Alberta had to win by 4 or more goals to advance. If they won 3-0 then they would have had a shoot-out with St. FX. Any other win would send St. FX through. And, of course, McGill's win sent them through. Please, CIS. add two more teams to the field and make this a straight knockout!

Mo-oo-oo-cha also lost his touch. He was incredible against Calgary and Manitoba in the CW playoffs but was a bit of a sieve in this one.

Anyhow, after being around for 135 years, McGill was due to make a first appearance in the final.

NEW BRUNSWICK VARSITY REDS 4
WESTERN ONTARIO MUSTANGS 0

UNB made this one look easy. For some reason, the teams were lippy in the pre-game. Whatever. At least this one was easy: winner advances, loser out. To me it was just a matter of time before the Urban Cowboys fell apart. Their only pressure came on the PP. And what was with all those calls? I suspect that there was the odd dive thrown in there as well, mostly from UWO.

McGill did well to make it this far. However, my view of the match-up was that in 100 games they would still have a hard time beating UNB. They were smaller and on any rush got one shot and that was it. No sustained pressure, no ability to force the play, no real threat to score. So UNB hosts this again next year. (I hate that.)

Hollywood, any news on the Bisons recruiting front?

They are losing...

Greg Beller
Riley Dudar
Nolan Waker
Steve Christie

For sure, and rumor has it...

Kyle Howarth
Jordan Cyr

I know they have Matt Lowry ready to go for sure with rumored recruits Neal Prokop and Travis Bobbee, any news beyond that?
