Here is a line up sans Smith and Kostitsyn.

UFA-Fisher-Wilson
Bourque- Legwand - Hornqvist
Beck - Barkov? - Forsberg
Clune - Gaustad - Spaling

Halischuk, Butler

Honestly, I don't know if I want to trade either Smith or Kostitsyn. Smith's value is close to negative with his contract and production so we will get nothing.
Most here would want a 26 year old who fits in the system and his previous two full seasons are 43 and 50 points, especially for free, and thats Kostitsyn. Like Smith his value is at a low point, and this is a move if he rebounds could pay dividends, if we trade him it would be for something like a 4th round pick.

I really don't envy Poile. The only pieces that are tradable and have value are guys like Bourque and Beck. Everyone else we want gone would be given away or has a NTC.
guys like Spaling, sk, and halischuck can pull a 4th to 5th round pick. they are under contract for at least a full year. remember jerred smithson pulled a 4th. I know the deadline the price is higher, so maybe drop it a round or two for the offseason. They have value.

One thing that I hope doesn't happen but I could see Poile maybe doing is....

Trade our 4th overall pick and Ellis plus SK to Buffalo

For

The 8th overall pick this year and Vanek

I truely hope Poile doesn't move out of the 4th spot but I could see something like this going down.

I don't think our 2013 draft pick or Forsberg make the team right out of camp.

that would be highway robbery for us and would do that deal any day of the week. However, there is no way in hell Buffalo touches that deal.

I disagree. I for sure think 1 of the 2 will be.

Especially if we get Barkov. He's huge, dynamic, and has been playing against men.

He's also only 17. Physically I think he could be ready but isn't that asking a lot, to come to a new country, play against the best in the world on a rink much smaller than the rink you have played on much of your life while barely speaking the language.

I just don't see why Poile would focus on Vanek. Way too much risk involved in acquiring him, which would be very un-Poile-like. Giving up the "franchise center" everyone keeps clamouring about for a one-year rental is just a poor move. The 8th is a nice high pick, but takes us out of that range.

Maybe not who, but what. Per Caley on the trades board:

I hope we keep it unless it's crazy overpayment

I really hope we don't trade down out of the top 5 for another 1st or a second.

I'd be ok with a young potentially elite forward + a first or something. But I do not want to trade out of the elite just to get another late first and then we end up with another 50 pt tops forward.

Here's a crazy idea, trade the 4th for a productive F to mentor Forsberg. Might be better to have that than 2 younguns that don't get proper development.

Doubt it happens re: the Erat conversation on the team going for youth but just an idea to toss out there.

We have plenty of veteran mentors. What you can't teach is experience and man strength. We are young the way it is. Trying to pencil in a 18 and a 19 year old is not going to work out well, esp where people think they SHOULD be playing.

Maybe have one in a top 6 role and one on a 4th line, although more of an offensicve 4th line. for example Smith centering one of the kids and a guy like spaling. Can be sound in their own end and out out in high leverage situations. also gives the ability to swap them if needed.

Sure we have a few veterans...but effective goal/point scorers that can be mentors to mold an elite prospect? Not in my opinion.

One of Smith/SK, one of Blum/Ellis, and Gill are our trade pieces this summer IMO. Unless someone really good becomes available.

Looking at who will be competing for roster spots...

Spaling
Halischuk
Clune
Smith
Kostitsyn
Bang
Butler

Ellis
Blum
Ekholm

Those guys are competing for two regular spots, three at most. Kostitsyn is easy to rule out, but from there it's all personal preference. None of those guys really have significant value, but a bunch of mid- and late-round draft picks would probably be better for the organization than a glut of grinders.

Spaling should be re-signed, and Clune was solid enough in his role to assume he'll stick. Smith and Kostitsyn should be expected on the roster due to contract status. Barring trades or FA signings, definite forwards look like:

Legwand
Fisher
Hornqvist
Kostitsyn
Wilson
Gaustad
Smith
Bourque
Clune
(Spaling)

Wonder if there would be any way to get Josh Harding from Minny to replace Mason. I doubt it but he's playing lights out tonight. I'm really impressed with him.

Edit: Had paused DVR to take care of something and just after I posted this Chicago scores.

Is it conceivable that Smith would clear waivers if they picked the right point in the pre-season to send him down? I guess there may be a few teams that would take a chance on him at $2m but it has to be a very, very short list.

It would be a gamble to try but it looks like what he really needs is a serious offseason commitment and/or significant stint in the ahl.

Smith would clear waivers if sent to Milwaukee the problem is that his 2mil will be paid if hes in Nashville or Milwaukee. If he going to remain in the Preds system it will be in Nashville otherwise he will be one of the contracts bought out. There little choice. If he stays thats 4 million in salary over two years.

Doubtful. If Bobby Butler and Zach Boychuk were claimed, I don't see why Smith wouldn't be, even at that $2M figure and coming off a regressive season.

I'm not completely ready to give up on him yet.

Sk on the other hand.

As for the topic of this thread. I want Poile to trade the guys that are bringing the least amount to the table. So, SK should be sweating, Halischuk, Spaling, Butler, Blum and Bartley wold all top my list, oh, and I couldn't leave Smith off either.

I would trade SK-74, Smith, Hustlechuk, and Blum/Ellis.

With a 2014 first thrown in there, maybe we could get someone like Vanek or Bobby Ryan (does anyone know if he is still available?) for some combination of those pieces. Then, if it is Vanek, do everything we can to sign him to a long term, of course.

Probably not enough, but a darkhorse we could trade could be Magnus Hellberg, though neither team really needs a goalie, oh well I tried lol.
