lololololololol! In other news i for some reason find your centers to be in reversed order of actual overall play.

Stepan has played a significantly higher level than any other American center this season. Hes got 12 more points than the next highest scoring center and hes been very good defensively as well. I don't see how he can be the 4th line C or extra forward if you project for 2014 as of now...

Canes homer here. What is the general thought on Justin Faulk cracking the top-6 in 2014?

Ryan Suter - Ryan McDonagh
Erik Johnson - Keith Yandle
Jack Johnson - Zach Bogosian
Paul Martin

The only person I could see Faulk bumping is EJ.

I think Faulk will be there. He's really young but he's awesome and already a top pairing d-man. The one thing with young defenseman is they tend to have up-and-down swings early in their careers so if Faulk experiences that next season that could obviously play a role since he won't have the experience of his competition. I would take him 10 times out of 10 over Eirk Johnson right now without hesitation. In my opinion the only locks on defense right now are Suter, McDonagh, and Jack Johnson: the first two because of their play and Johnson because of his loyalty and play as well. In my mind, the rest is up for grabs at this point but I wouldn't bet against Faulk and hopefully he gets a ton of ice here in the upcoming WC to help cement his status.

Faulk is certainly in contention for one of the final four slots. I agree with Bonney that there are roughly four locks in McDonaugh, Johnson and Suter. I question whether Bogosian will ever be healthy enough to play and I'd pick Faulk over Erik and Martin.

I agree the Defense could be a total crapshoot. Suter's a lock but every other spot is up for grabs. I think this definitely has to be the deepest selection pool the US has ever had in this kind of tournament. I don't know if they'll be the best/most talented squad assembled but I think it has the potential to be. Players will be left off the roster that would have been locks and expected to carry a big load in previous years. No offense to Tim Gleason but I doubt we'll be seeing a guy of his caliber on the roster.

My prediction for the D

Suter-McDonagh
Byfuglien-E. Johnson
J. Johnson-Carlson
Faulk

I hate leaving off Bogosian, Martin, Orpik, Yandle...

just wanted to say RIP to Tim Taylor who lost his battle to cancer.

I remember him fondly as being heavily involved with many US international teams. he was a great coach and huge supporter of all things USA Hockey. He will be missed.

I like the potential of this d-core, this core has a chance to catch some teams off guard with their mobility and skill because we're going to need a defense that is as mobile and that was involved in the offense as this year's World Junior team in Ufa.

My defense for Sochi would go like this:

Suter- McDonagh

J.Johnson- Yandle

Shattenkirk- Bogosian

Faulk

Hopefully Bogosian can get healthy next season because I like his nastiness, his presence on the point, and fits the mold of the type of defensemen we need in Sochi.

Love watching Jon Quick when it counts. He's got to be the guy at this point. I know he was always the favorite, but people were nervous with this season's struggles.

I was going to say the same thing but I was worried about being accused of trolling.

Note to Team Canada in 2014:

Get Quick to play the puck.

All I can say is I guess we can be glad playoff gaffes/lack of playoff success is not necessarily a harbinger of International failure (ahem....Luongo).

I would argue that it is. Canada won in 2010 INSPITE of Luongo, NOT because of him.

Hell, if we had a good (above average) goalie in net, the Gold medal game never goes to OT in the first place.

(ahem.... )

you must have forgotten about that good other goalie Brodeur and how he got beat down all over the ice.. Luongo was fine in the Olympics, the best your country had..

that is why you are very vulnerable in 2014 because you simply do not have elite level goaltending.

I agree 100%, AD.

If we had even one of you great goalies, I would say we had a 66%+ chance of winning Gold - we have endless elite scorers and the Olympic's best D. Even if we only get average goaltending, I still think we are the favourite by a nice margin. But...

Price has been awful.
MAF has a habit of imploding - WJR's in 2004 and last year's playoffs.
Brodeaur can’t buy Depends in Russia.

As I have said before, next December we should put ALL the Canadian goalies on a spreadsheet. In the next column we include the formula :

G.A.A. - (2*Save Percentage)

The 3 goalies with the lowest number go to Sochi - and I don't care who they are.

Anyway, you don't need to remind us how weak we are in net. We know… God knows, we know.

The goalie many Canadians think will represent us in Sochi (Luongo) is the backup to a goalie that may not even be good enough to make your Olympic Team.

As a Blues fan (and an American), I'm curious as to what you guys think the chances are for Oshie, Backes, and especially Shattenkirk.

As a Canadian, I know you are all wondering what I think about this question. Well...

Vegas Paulie said, "I'll be honest, I'd probably take a team of twenty Brown's/Callahan's over a team of 20 Canadian skill players. After all, hard work and physical play is the heart of the North American style of play, yes?"

You send these players and that is exactly what you are going to get.

**

I want to root for the Bruins but they have too many Americans in their line-up. I'll save you looking. It rhymes with "Hero".

Sadly, they don't have enough Canadians. (Out of 20 players) It rhymes with "Thirteen".

Go Bruins Go!!!

The "many Canadians" you're speaking of all belong to the same province.

The guy's not even making the team, unless Team Canada feels they "need" to bring him like they did with Brodeur; and we all know how that turned out.

Backes is a lock, Oshie has a good chance if he has a good season. Shattenkirk needs to play almost perfectly next season because the competition on D is intense.
