He's the Blades best PKer, so yeah. It will be a big asset for us as once he's NHL-ready he will be able to jump right onto either the first or second penalty killing unit. Blocks shots, has long reach and his discipline really improved this year.

Didn't we draft Troy Rutkowski? What happened there?

Didn't sign him... probably was a mistake, but he likely wasn't going to amount much here with at very least EJ, Barrie, and Elliott ahead of him.

He probably won't amount to much period. Didn't put up any impressive numbers until his overage year on a stacked team.

Numbers don't always tell a full story. The kid will have a pro career, but hard to say if he'll ever develop into an NHL player.

No loss IMO, he wouldn't have turned out to anything with the Avs in LE. Now that he's with Ottawa and their development system, he at least has a small shot.

I think he has the potential to be a top pairing AHL guy, if not more, by the time he's in his mid 20's. Those kind of guys are valuable to an organization, especially one that wants to be a winning organization. Always have a pipeline of young talent ready, just like the LA Kings did with their defensive lineup starting 4-5 years ago.

So is Colin Smith going to turn pro? He's played almost 4 full years in the WHL, I'm not really sure what good another year there would do for his development.

I would imagine him in a bottom 6 role with the Monsters next year.

I'd like to see Smith get a shot in Lake Erie, but I think if he was going to get that shot we would have heard about it with the Beaupre/Meurs/ Oh Laurdy! signings.

IMO, He was our best d-man overall this year. He made some rookie mistakes and needs to get stronger, but he was very consistent.

If you're asking fantasy wise, he's going to be putting up points next year.

I think we could all say that he experienced the normal ups and downs that a rookie defenseman in the NHL would experience

But it was quite literally the game after EJ suffered his concussion, I believe we played Columbus. If my memory serves me correct, he played the most minutes of our D-Corps, and played alongside Hejda and looked damn good.

He also scored at a 33 point pace this year, which isn't too bad for a rookie.

I fully expect him to be an everyday player next year, and hopefully he can work on his shot accuracy....because he sure wasn't afraid to use it on the PP last year, which was actually a bit refreshing to see. (An Avs PP where the Defenseman wasn't afraid to shoot)

Norris caliber. Most underrated defenseman in the league.

Third best player on the team after Duchene and Parenteau. Whether that's impressive or not, given our season, is up for debate. I was pleased.

Thanks for the responses, guys

Sounds like I really made out like a bandit in a trade I made in a keeper

I think I talked about this before, but I can't remember.

If we keep Duchene, Stastny and O'Reilly, do we start grooming Sgarbossa and Hishon for wing? Seems like there is no room for them in the lineup, so either we move them to wing or trade them at a really low value.

Sgarbossa + Hishon for Ty Rattie?

I'm assuming those two will already end up on the wing. I don't see them playing center at the NHL level.

Interesting.

We have the worst luck with drafting Euros.

I knew we wouldn't signed Nermark, not surprised at all. Just glad to see we didn't waste a contract on him and went after some undrafted guys like Agozzino, Lauridsen and that other dude we just grabbed than signing players that have no future with us.

Just curious...

Hishon vs Sgarbossa...who has more upside and who will be the better NHLer if either?

Good question. I would almost put them on equal footing. Though I have to give my edge to Sgarbossa.

Ooh...interesting question.

I was so impressed with what Hishon did last year, I would say that he would. Nearly 2 years off the game and he came back and actually produced!

And it seems like he's going to be able to go through the rigors of an NHL Offseason and Training Camp.

IF he stays healthy, Hishon for sure.
