Well, you can move him, and make a separate deal for Dustin Byfuglien.

Say, you flip Staal for 1st+Tlusty+McBain (optimistic) and move Del Zotto and something else for Big Buff. I think that sets us up pretty nicely.

But where's the depth if one of them gets hurt? McD or Girardi go down and where will our defense be if we've traded Staal away?

Injuries are opportunities for other players to step up. The Rangers don't carry a 2nd starter in case Hank goes down.

Vet #5 d-man (say Douglas Murray)

If McIlrath and Murphy prove not to be ready than let the vet play and sign another depth d-man like Eminger.
I am a HUGE Del Zotto supporter but I am wary of penciling him into the first pairing. I think he could do play that role for stretches but cannot be counted upon for the whole of a season. Not yet at least, if ever.

I don't think we can or should assume McIlrath makes the team out of camp. I hope for it but think he will be mid-season call-up which is ok, too. Do like your idea of adding a bottom pairing vet d-man, though.

I was under the impression the the 8th year was for your own players.

Wasn't aware that you could trade for a player that their next contract would be a UFA contract and still offer them 8 years

Otherwise, how do we close the loophole in the sense that a UFA to be that has not yet got to 07/01 gets traded and the acquiring team inks him to an 8 year deal where he would not be able to get that 8th year a week later.

Pretty sure that's what the ultimately settled on. 8 year max to re-sign your own players, 7 year max on UFAs.

To give the 8th year, the player needs to be in the organization prior to the most recent trade deadline.

http://www.nhl.com/nhl/en/v3/ext/CBA...2013%20(1).pdf

Quote:
Maximum contract length of seven (7) years subject to Club’s ability to re-sign its own Player for a term of up to eight (8) years (provided the Player was on the Club’s Reserve List as of the most recent Trade Deadline). With respect to potential Unrestricted Free Agents only, the option to resign a Player for an 8-year term expires with the opening of Free Agency on July 1.

Thanks for the link.

That 8th year might be an incentive for Carolina, should they be interested at all, to trade for him sooner rather than later.

I know this is an eventuality that should be planned for, but I hate it. I'm of the mind-set that we pay out what it takes and retain him when the time comes. If he is really that interested in playing with his brothers, make him prove it by walking away from a ton of money on the table (relative to his position on the team).

It's just that he's the kind of player you get an absolute ton out of. He has the skill set and hockey sense that even as his legs deteriorate as he ages, he'll become a cagey veteran, and just as awesome just in a tad different way. Not only is he a work-horse on the ice, but he's one off the ice as well, and he's got a great skill set, and great hockey sense at both ends of the ice, and he competes HARD. On top of having the head and skills of a top notch guy, genetically he's a true super-athlete for this sport. Long, solid, quick and powerful.

None of the returns I've seen mentioned replace him in the line-up with something better.

Not quite sure how that helps the Rangers if they throw "a ton" of money at him.

Either he winds up walking away and the Rangers havent gotten any value for him, or we wind up overpaying for him.
