If eveything goes as planned Kulda will replace Saviels and Girgensons will replace Armands Berzins.

Kulda's already with the team, and I guess we'll find out about Zemgus tonight if the Amerks lose.

Definitely the weakest squad they've iced in a while. It's never good to be without three of your top forwards and a top d-man with Stanley Cup final experience. The new tournament format might work in their favour though, although I wouldn't be entirely surprised if this is the year they finally drop back out of the elite division after 17 or so years. I find it interesting that Saviels and Andersons made the cut over Cibulskis (even if one of them are now gone with Kulda in town).

Despite trying to stay as positive as I can, I think we sure could do with some lucky bounces in this tournament. We are severely lacking skill-first players.

Also Darzins as a captain? Dunno. :/

This team will battle against Germany, France and Austria on superior to equal footing, but seems to lack the extra against the top nations.

It's not like they had many guys to choose from. It was essentially between him and Sprukts, and since Janis abandoned the team two years ago year to go on vacation, that wouldn't have sent the right message.

Rochester-AHL were just eliminated in OT, so Girgensons should be available now .. he totaled three goals in their three playoff games vs Toronto .. has shown much improvement from the start of the season.

It's funny. I saw his first AHL game in person against the Marlies, and then saw him play them again last month, and by all means, he looked better and more dominant in the first game (and that was with more Sabres on the roster). It's good to see him so confident and productive in the playoffs though, even if it wasn't enough to get the Amerks further (certainly not his fault). Hopefully he picks up right where he left off at the Worlds.

It would seem so, unless Girgensons played through an injury (which I don't think was the case). His play also peaked at a fortunate time, as he was arguably Rochester's best player in their series, and below are his goals from those losses.

Game 1 goals at 1:45 and 3:00; missed chance at 3:30:

Game 3 goal at 0:50:

He may not have looked out of place early, but he was never among Rochester's best players on the ice when NHLers were around. He'd flash his compete and physicality, but the confidence in puck possession was noticeably lacking, especially with errant passes, and his inexperience in protecting himself after giving/taking hits left him having to pick himself off the ice frequently. Then his concussion stalled any momentum he had built up, but since then he's been a solid contributor (PP and PK time) and even seen time at center, instead of the previous weaning at left wing. Lately, he had found chemistry with Buffalo's deadline acquisition Johan Larsson and formed a very hard-working pair.

Adding Girgensons certainly improves the lines a lot on paper!
But without Mikelis Redlihs it's surely weakened a lot offensively and Janis Sprukts often plays his best with him, right?

Indrasis-Girgensons-Jekimovs could be an excellent 2'nd line though!

Well not quite,Lauris Darzins plays the best alongside Mikelis,Mikelis does the assisting,Darzins the scoring, looks like Cipulis will have to take that job now(Played in Lev Prague,KHL but currently without a club)

These i think will be the lines, probably few tweaks in bottom-6 but top 6 will likely stay like this.

Curious if Freibergs or Jekimovs have NHL potential. From only looking at stats it would seem that both are highly skilled guys.

I saw Freibergs play at BG this year and was around for a couple of his interviews his goal is to play professionally, I think he meant NHL which is way he is playing NCAA Hockey. From what I saw and talking with the coaches is that he is a pretty high skilled defenseman and a true PP quarterback, BG has been historically bad on the PP and when he was suspended for the first 30 games the joke was the scout/practice team PP was better than the actual PP.

He played very few games due to the suspension but looked good in all of them, he's not the best skater and can look flat footed sometimes mostly just in terms of top speed (saw him get burned a few times), but is good enough with his body positioning.

Realisticly it might be a long shot in terms of NHL potential as he was a 21 year old freshman, to be anything more than a bottom pairing D-man and a PP specialist but I think he has a shot at it.

Always root for Latvia after Team USA, this just gives me more to root for as a BG alum.

Maybe Freibergs, after four years in college, but still a long shot. Next De Keyser

Jekimovs? No way.

Anyone else not in mood to watch Championship games? I've kind of lost the passion for hockey. Could be because of that "project" ruining hockey in Latvia. And is Jass really fit to play for the NT?

Oh, look Dinamo"KGB"Warrior and InternetWarrior in one person! Keep ignoring the fact that hockey in Latvia is weak and your KGB project is helping in its demise! Facing the facts isn't whining, ignoring them is weakness. Open your eyes! Everyone in the country knows it, yet you just keep pretending everything is fine with status quo. How come the best prospects are the ones playing in North America?
