What no play for the "elite" D Marc Staal? Rangers fans, just too funny.

Think more along the lines of Vandermeer, SOB, or Alberts.
I was thinking more Regher, Clitsome, O'Byrne, Fistric

I don't think this board has the capacity to handle Faulk, Semin, and Clitsome at the same time.

To be honest, I really wouldn't mind either of those two until they start put on the sightless eye and start playing terrible, as we all know they would.

Also, know that he's a cyclops, it would be a perfect time for Marc to reveal that he wants to join his brothers in Carolina, and completely kill his value.

If he were ever going to do that, he'd be smart to do it before the draft in which the Canes are holding the #5 overall.

McBain for Coburn, make it happen JR.

Seriously though, no shocks here. Wouldn't be surprised when all is said and done to see Char in Char next season. Other dman is probably going to be a cheaper Alberts type to use as our #7. Sangs I'm OK with keeping onboard on a two-way deal, keep him in Charlotte until needed, same goes for Bellemore who I'm more then fine with keeping. Retooled defensive depth chart could look something like this:

Gleason - Faulk
Pitkanen - Coburn
Harrison - MAB
Alberts

Murphy, Sanguinetti, Bellemore, Biega, Lowe, Jordan

I don't think it's trust as much as I don't think he fits what Muller has in mind for the bottom 6 and/or where they want to go given the division they are in. They have said they want the team to be tougher to play against and guys like Brent and LaRose (and even Dwyer) don't really fit that mold. Add to it that he didn't have a very good season, and the writing is kind of on the wall.

I do agree some other team will pick him up though.

If they’re looking at the UFA route for a defenseman, one guy I hope JR takes a run at is Toni Lydman. While he wouldn’t be the sexiest acquisition considering his age and declining play, I think he’d still be a solid pick-up. Lydman is a SAH type defenseman who will play a solid defensive game, block shots and provide a decent level of physicality. The downside is that he’s not going to bring much in the way of offense and his decision making with the puck is seemingly about getting it off of his stick as fast as possible. I don’t think that would be too big of an issue if Lydman were to be paired with someone who’s able to move the puck effectively. Ideally, he would be slotted next to fellow Finn Joni on the 2nd pair. Despite being a LHS, Lydman’s able to play the right side. The versatility in Lydman being able to play either side would come in handy when Joni inevitably gets hurt during the season. My guess is that a 2 year deal at the $3 mil per he's making on his expiring contract (http://www.capgeek.com/player/386) should be enough to get him, but the UFA market is hard to predict.

Gleason - Faulk
Pitkanen - Lydman
Harrison - Komisarek?
MAB?

Link to the Press Conference for those who have 35 minutes to burn.

Couple Notes:

-Rutherford basically ruled out drafting a defenseman at #5, and also seemed to rule out moving from that position.

-Said the player will be an impact player, and didn't explicitly say it, but the player is already penciled into the lineup for the fall.

-The decision on where Skinner will play (wing or center) will have a lot to do with what happens this summer, most likely with whether we draft a wing for center at #5

-Sounds like most of our UFA's will be let go, no big surprise there, with Ellis and MAB being the most likely to return, if any.

-Mentioned again how the team missed Allen and Spacek, wants to add 1-2 veteran defenseman, and thought Bellemore or Murphy could also take a spot in the top 6.

-Said they would consider moving top 6 forward for a top defenseman, but that the situation is highly unlikely to come along. Look more towards buyout candidates as likely veteran defensemen.

-Mentioned that we would be spending 60-61 million this year, that it's necessary to be "closer to the cap than floor" to be competitive in our new division.

-Muller mentioned specifically wanting guys who take pride in killing penalties, want players who know their role and take pride in that.

-Rutherford made it sound like it was completely Chad's decision to skip his exit interview, but that it didn't preclude his return.

I'd like to see Hainsey picked up but he will probably get overpaid as the cream of the crop for D this UFA class.

Leopold would be my next option with lydman, Regehr, and Scuderi after that.

One of the members of our 'retooled defense' will consist of one of Komisarek or Liles after they are bought out from Toronto. JR already alluded to it in his presser. I will almost guarantee it.

For forwards, what are the chances that Oskar Osala and Evgenii Dadonov are brought back over?

Osala has the skating and the size that Muller wants, and Dadonov is no slouch in the KHL. Here are their stats:

Dadonov: Donbass HC

52GP, 14g, 23a, 37p

Osala: Neftekhimik
2011-2012: 41GP, 12g, 7a, 19p
2012-2013: 44GP, 14g, 10a, 24p

EDIT: Dadonov lead his team in scoring, and remember, the KHL doesn't give out secondary assists.

Osala is intriguing, Finnish Erik Cole. I hope the Canes haven't forgotten about him. He could probably fit on the third line.

Dadonov, not so much... Russian Zack Boychuck.

Michael Smith ‏@MSmithCanes
After acquisition of Bergeron, #Canes PP was 8-for-39 (20.5%). Scoring at that clip all season would have ranked 5th in East, 6th in NHL.

If he's cheap. I see no problem with him as a 7th defenseman and double shifting someone on the 4th line. Worked in 06

I'd have no problems with bringing MAB back. Just with the provision that he is a 7D as others have mentioned.

The Finnish Erik Cole comparison for Osala was always woefully inept. Cole being a guy who made his bones on speed and Osala who can't stick for that same reason... it just doesn't make sense. More like the Finnish Brad Isbister.

They do. (Can't tell if you're just having a laugh though, as that fallacy about secondaries is thrown around on HF a lot.)

It's too bad Osala didn't make the Finnish WC team. Would have loved to see where he's at.

How physical is Osala? He definitely has the size Muller wants for the lower lines.

Also have a feeling that Char skipping the exit interview means bad things from both sides, or good things from both sides if you hate him. Probably feels like the new coach was the only reason for his drop in production. Didn't want to answer questions about it. Don't let the door hit ya, young man.

If he can catch anybody, quite physical. He's basically Nic Blanchard with soft hands.
