Dupuis is just a product of Jussi Jokinen.

He's proof that Sidney Crosby literally makes his teammates better.

You definitely don't watch Dupuis if you think this. The guy performs no matter what line he's on. Last year he was something like 5th in the NHL in ES points while playing with Staal and Steve Sullivan all year.

Definitely one of the most underrated players in the league. Guy is just about as fundamental as you can get combined with all hustle.

Simple answer is no.

Just to compare his even strength work against Bergeron and Datsyuk - two legitimate Selke contenders:

Dupuis...

Gives up more goals (GA/60):
Bergeron: 1.29
Datsyuk: 1.41
Dupuis: 2

Gives up more shots against (per 60):
Bergeron: 23.9
Datsyuk: 22.9
Dupuis: 29.8

Takes more penalties:
Bergeron: 0.6
Datsyuk: 0.4
Dupuis: 0.9

And does it all while playing against a lower quality of competition:
Bergeron: 0.028
Datsyuk: 0.079
Dupuis: 0.004

And in the case of Datsyuk with a significantly better supporting cast.

In addition he's not nearly as good on faceoffs as either, isn't nearly as good as Bergeron on the PK, and isn't nearly as disruptive as Datsyuk.

I didn't mean that he's good because he plays on a line with Crosby, I meant that since he's played with Crosby he's become a better offensive player in his own right.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. I'm not even sure Steigerwald could say that with a straight face.

Omg what? Pens fans are losing it in front of my eyes. Between this thread and the playoffs one about them being the one of the top 10 teams of all time, it's getting insane.

Selke is an award of reputation. You need to first build it and then you will become a finalist...and eventually the winner.

Is markz a Pens fan? He's been mixing things up in the Canada WC roster thread.

Plus/- is the most useless hockey stat ever. So the fact that it's the only evidence you provide for your argument is telling.

His 2.00 GA/60 min is pretty pedestrian, as is his QoC. He's nothing special defensively.

A nomination let alone a win would be a huge surprise.

Unfortunately Selke nominations are 9/10 times the usual suspects

This, just flip a coin on Dats, Kesler and Toews. It's good to give it to them because they're big names

I believe CORSI rel QoC is a lot more telling than +/- QoC

Datsyuk: 1.340
Dupuis: 1.225
Bergeron: .627

Also you have to consider OZONE starts:

Dupuis: 42.3%
Bergeron: 42.4%
Datsyuk: 54.9%

Do you mean a coin flip between those 3 for second place while Bergeron takes first?

This 100%. You don't actually have to be good at defense to win the Selke, you just need to convince the mindless drones in the Canadian media that you're good at defense and you've got the Selke on lockdown.

(Not directed at Dupuis, Kesler, or any specific player).

I can't recall anyone winning the Selke recently who wasn't an excellent defensive player.

The Selke is a completely subjective award. Every year some dude makes a cool defensive play and everyone just assumes he/she is good defensively. Not to say they aren't,but once the reputation is set they win it.

It's probably the worst trophy to win in all of sports

If a guy like Ladd or Hossa can't win, neither will Dupuis.

Name 1 player who has been in the running for the Selke but hasn't been an elite defensive player.

Sure a couple plays here or there might make HF say a guy is a solid defensive player, but it doesn't put him in Selke running.

Bias won't be the reason he won't win. He won't win because he doesn't deserve the award. Saying he was better than Bergeron this season is just hilarious. When Bergeron went down with injury it had a very noticeable effect on the defense. Very. Dupuis is a good player, but not Selke worthy.

Does that guy actually think the winner of the Selke will win because of reputation? Way to shout your ignorance to the whole board.
