Well, I am not sure how well Backs would fare without Ovechkin. Granted he was PPG last season even when Ovechkin struggled greatly.
Offensively Tavares has higher upside, but he hasn't really reached that yet. Defensively it is not even close.
If I remember correctly Backstrom is one of the few players who has made the double top-10 list. Top-10 in scoring and top-10 in selke voting. Well, getting the top-10 in Selke voting is sometimes ridiculously easy but nevertheless, can anyone of you see Tavares getting consideration for Selke trophy?
At this point I would still take Backstrom. Tavares might chance my mind but to tell you the truth, I kind of expected more from him this year. I was pretty sure that he would have been top-5 in points even in the midway trough the season. But he faltered a bit in the end and slided as down as 17th in overall scoring.
