this will be JT in a landslide. not because they arent close in skill, but because hf overrates JT. great player. but not top 5 like some suggest.

Right now? Backstrom, he already has a 100 point season and great in both sides of the puck. Thats not to say Tavares wont surpass him though.

Backstrom, most underrated player on HF I think.

"AINEC"? Can I have what you guys are smoking?

Backstrom is PPG in his career and is much better defensively, you can make a case for Tavares but "AINEC" is stupid.

That 100 point season was an outlier in a season when the Caps were an absolute juggernaut. He's more of a PPG player.

Do we discredit Gretzky's 200 point seasons because he played on "absolute juggernaut" teams?

Fact of the matter is he still did it.

Backstrom has 4 actual PPG seasons, Tavares doesn't even have 1 yet, albiet 2 very close ones.

Backstrom until Tavares does something to prove otherwise.

Backstrom imo. Similar offensive production, much better defensivly. I could see how someone could say JT though, hes the more exciting player.

some of you saying "ainec"

Well, I am not sure how well Backs would fare without Ovechkin. Granted he was PPG last season even when Ovechkin struggled greatly.

Offensively Tavares has higher upside, but he hasn't really reached that yet. Defensively it is not even close.

If I remember correctly Backstrom is one of the few players who has made the double top-10 list. Top-10 in scoring and top-10 in selke voting. Well, getting the top-10 in Selke voting is sometimes ridiculously easy but nevertheless, can anyone of you see Tavares getting consideration for Selke trophy?

At this point I would still take Backstrom. Tavares might chance my mind but to tell you the truth, I kind of expected more from him this year. I was pretty sure that he would have been top-5 in points even in the midway trough the season. But he faltered a bit in the end and slided as down as 17th in overall scoring.

Backstrom for me but it is close.

Swap Tavares with Backstrom on that Caps team and you'll see why most are saying "JT ainec"

And Tavares is much more? I'm a huge, huge fan of Tavares to the point of overrating him a bit, but Backstrom has proven far more - not to mention huge potential.

What a joke, this is Backstrom right now. I fully expect Tavares to be better in the future but right now its Backstrom

Heh check out Backstrom's stats without Ovechkin.

Tavares doesn't have the luxury of having even an Eberle at his wing, let alone an Ovechkin.

John Tavares by a small country mile. This is a lopsided matchup if I ever saw one.

Well... at least HFBoards is consistent with its overrating Tavares. I give the slight edge to Backstrom in this poll, but it is very close. Anyone saying either one AINEC is simply wrong.

Backstrom. Tavares may be a better goal scorer, but Backstrom is the total package.
